I have to second your experience. I first began commenting on this thread in Oct. 2011. I'd tried every suggestion except turning off the Cloud. Right after I upgrade to 5.1 on my iPad 1 the first thing I noticed was the speed. Things just seemed to go much faster. I next played the notorious Lion video and it didn't crash. I then tried navigating back to a frequently used website and it didn't load a cached page! Plus one site that I used on a daily basis wasn't laggy anymore. I then opened Calendar and all of my events loaded! I hope this lasts! I'll report back.

From the mixed reports on here then maybe something changed for the better in 5.1. For me, the iPad still crashes, and not just on safari (with java disabled!). I find it hard to believe that the problem is because of heavy websites because they existed before 6 months ago when we had 4.3 which NEVER crashed!

If Ford built a car that didn't always work that well, so customers decide to drive it slow, never drive with the softop down, started to second guest the problem and share 'solutions', and stopped using the features, like heated seats and air conditioning just in case it caused the random stalling problem........and then they ignored the problem hoping it would go away or the customers would get tired and just buy a later version of the same car.......would they get away with it? Would it not make front page news? Would they not be forced to recall every single car? And issue an apologetic statement about customer service and their commitment to quality?

RickH, not disagreeing with you. However, the problem is that the iOS 5 crashes because of heavily loaded pages meant for desktops. It's true that they ran under 4.3. But when you try to load all of the different variety of pages with embedded content and at the same time build in features that allow for photo streaming, cloud syncing, and many of the other multi-processing features of iOS 5, the older iPads can't handle it.

I believe it was a mistake not to acknowlege the problem and to not provide a path to downgrade back to 4.3 for those that visit those type of heavily ladden pages. I have had serveral iPad owners (in real world, not online) confess that their iPad now crashes and they must have done something wrong.

When I get my iPad 3rd Gen, which I ordered yesterday and expect arrival on 3/19 or sooner, I will go to those crash sites and see what happens. Some analysts say the new iPad has 1G ram vs the 512 of the previous generations. But Apple has never published that spec. We truly won't know until someone like iFixit takes it appart and publishes what they find.

No disrespect, but do your eyes look like little apples? I'd be happy to stay on IOS 5. How about instead allowing us to turn off features (such as icloud) that we don't want? I know I'm paranoid, but backing up personal information to a "cloud" worries me. I've turned off all aspects that seem to be configurable, but based on your comments it is still in there somewhere. IOS 5 for me provided nice new functionality but also provided features I don't want. Allow us to pick and choose.

I really don't want to shell out $700 dollars each year for the latest and the greatest.

No offense taken. No one should be expected to upgrade their hardware platform each year just to make their devices work crash free. It's not an affordable or sustainable strategy for any but the wealthiest consumers (I'm not in the 1%). I've had the iPad 1 since day 1 so it's been about 3 years? I get to write off my expenses for any technical device that I use in my business. I use the iPad's, MacBook Pro and Win 7 PCs for web design, SEO, Internet Marketing, and sales presentations.

I know a lot of people are frustrated because of the experience that had/are having with iOS 5. I too crossed over from the WinTel platform starting with the iPhone 3GS. Became so reliant on it I stood in line like a fanboy for the first iPad. In fact I felt (I know this sounds sick), that I was being unfaithful to my iPhone by getting an iPad. Crossed completely over to Apple's platform with the Mac based on the slogan "because it just works". Now I know that with all the complexities of true compatibility with software, it just works enough to meet my needs. I'm hoping for better than that with the iPad 3rd gen.
