If I use iMessage though a 3G connection am I consuming data from my data plan?

And if it does go through as data, then how much will it use!?

You can enable/disable them for iMessages.
They are always enabled for SMS.

I don't need to call them. I can monitor my wifi connection and see the traffic.
Suit yourself. But if your cell data is on and you're not sending a large picture or video, then your using cell data. Maybe you can't properly read your wifi data.
