iphone backup with 10.5 stuck in step 2 of 4

Did you try this? Found this in several places and it works for me

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")

3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.

4. Reboot your machine.

5. Restart iTunes.

WOO-HOOO! That did the trick. My iPad 2 just backed up and synced just like a normal Apple product. I'm filing that info away for future reference. MANY THANKS!!!!

You sir, are a STAR! I've been faffing around for hours trying to get iTunes to back-up my iPhone 4 and iPad in readiness for upgrading to OS5. It kept stalling at the "Backing Up.." stage. Did the Winsock reset thing, and Robert was indeed your parent's sibling. Many, many thanks for posting that here. 🙂

Like was stated earlier, you deserve a lot of credit for the find & fix sir!! Exactly what the problem was. Been struggling almost constantly for 3 days with this problem, and BLAMMO...that worked like a charm.

Many thanks again, and hopefully this will be addresses by Apple soon enough in a patch release so many others won't have to endure what we have.

Apple should pay you for posting this since you have saved them at least one customer. I have been struggling with this for 4 days and have been on the verge of cancelling my 4S order and looking in to Android phones. It worked like a charm!..

I love you!! I have spent hours on this. I've deleted photos as one person advised, I've deleted my backup files, I've re-installed iTunes etc etc etc and I so wish I'd found your post first. My iPhone was sticking after backing up 14 files only. It now backs up and syncs like it should do and I can now upgrade to iOS5. 🙂 Thank you, thank you, thank you XXXXX

Here is a solution:

Add those 2 lines to "User Preferences" section in iTunesPrefs.xml

(C:\Documents and Settings\User\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes)

<key>User Preferences</key>

This disable backup process.

Pilates you da man, now i can finally rest my head after sleeplesss nights, i do have a concern though, what triggered this, was it the installation of itunes 10.5 or did the firmware upgrade cause this. Not sure because i had 4 different users on different machines and backup would fail on all of them. So it couldnt had been locally on that machine.
