iphone backup with 10.5 stuck in step 2 of 4

I had the same problem trying to sync iPhone 4s IOS 5.1 to iTunes 10.5.0.142. Entire Windows XP system would lock, in step 2 of sync (backup). I noticed that previous backups took approx. 3.5 GB and I only has 2 GB free space. After freeing up adequate disk space, I was able to backup and sync successfully!!!!

thanks pilates! the only thing is that this fix is only temporary for me..every time I sync to itunes the backup hangs as usal and I have to do the netsh winsock reset all over again...does anyone have a permanent fix for this?

Thanks for all of the support. I had the same issue of being stuck in Step 2.

I did the netsh winsock reset command, restarted pc, and now the phone is backed up, and all information is saved.

Unbelievable, I did exactly as described and it fixed the problem. I have been trying for two months

to get out step 2 of seven, Pilates you really are the man. I am so relieved! Thanks!!!!

I continued to have issues backing up my Iphone 4s, always got hung and never would move past 2 of 7. Read glennstar11's post this clued me in. While I do not use the anti spyware he does I do use another product, once I disabled it back and sync ran just fine. I just disable it until Im done then re-enable it.

My computer says 'netish' is not recognized as an interanl or external command, operable program or batch. Help!

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I haven't been able to access the iTunes Store for the last 3 months. Even after paying Apple the 30 bucks to talk with someone to trouble shoot what seemed to be everything, they were of ZERO help. I got the new iPad last month and suddenly it got stuck on step 4 of 8 and I used your suggestion and not only does iPad update now, but the iTunes is totally back to normal.

I guess I must be doing something wrong:

I cant finish the sync /back up process on my iphone 4.😟

Not had this problem before, but think (maybe) last time I plugged her in it upgraded the software like others have mentioned....but im useless at this stuff😟

Basically I plug in - i tunes- starts the process then stops at step 2 of back up process (of 8) and goes no further, thus I can't do much with phone, like add or take away music or anything else.... grrrr

So, I tried the netsh winsock reset idea mentioned a few times, I got the message once I reset it to restart pc, and restart the i tunes..but typical of my luck...didnt work- same as before! Am i doing it right???

I notice some people have actually deleted the whole i tunes/ re installed i tunes.. will ilose everything though if do that? (i probably will)

AWESOME !!! i have been suffering since last year with this back up problem n this reset thingie finally solved it.. ur great !!!

I switched off my I cloud and it seems to be sycncing now!

I have been struggling with this for 6 months and have been in a panic about not having my phone backed up! It got me past the backup stage finally!! I am in step 7 of 7 and hopefully it will finish! No idea how you figured this out but grateful you did! I can get back to using my iphone with all capability finally! Thanks again!

thanx for saving soo much time and fixing the hung issue. For folks who tried it once and failed, restart your computer but do not give up on this tip. It worked for me
