Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I connected my iphone to update it with the iOS5 and it said it created a backup before updating it, but when I clicked Restore most of my photos where gone. I only had my first 20 photos out of almost 300. How can I recover them? I checked iPhoto but they weren't there!!
iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.3, iOS 5
I did a job up north and took pictures. I came home hooked up my phone did the new update and poof not videos or photos. I have tried every thing to get them. I dont really want to spend $29 to have them say they are gone. I hope we all can get our photos back!

In the future, it's important to know that when you sync your iPhone/iTouch, photos and videos do NOT get synced/backed up. I also learned this lesson the hard way. You must always copy them to your hard drive as you would with any digital camera.
@craitz-would it be so difficult for Apple to warn us of this issue BEFORE we download any of their updates? I will go back to using my digital camera!
Same problem. I found the photos on the iPhone. They are in files named 100 apple and 101 apple. But I am unable to move the files to another location and they are not viewable in the photo app. I have been able to view them using a download application called Iexplore.
It didn't work for me. My iphone started up but went right back to the normal screen. I had no chance to follow any directions. If anyone can help. please do.
I've lost everything as well, it said it was backing up so i left it i went to restore it and nothing came back besides me apps and contacts, ive lost all my notes, all my text messages all my photos!! is there any way it would of stored "deleted" back up somewhere on the pc?
I just got back from my honey moon and all photos are gone. EVERYONE OF THEM. How the heck am I going to explain this to my wife. I M FKED. I tried to do recover it from the back up and it is all gone.... Someone please help!!!
Ditto. All of our pictures and video from the trip to Tofino are completely gone.
Apple has a lot of hype around it for being a great and thoughtful company, but it's all hype. Especially when I read that this same thing happened after the iOS 4 update, you'd think that Apple could gin up a bit of concern for its loyal customers.
Not so much.
Lost all my pics and videos as well. Bums me out as I had a real good vid of my malamute "talking" to me (sounds like chewbacca). I had to put that dog down a few months back and it was a nice thing to have. Super bummed. Shame on you apple for not offering some sort of warning that your new OS would F-up my phone!
Found this solution on another question board on this site - by ab70. It completely worked. Download iExplorer - it lets you look at your iPhone files like a flash drive. The pictures have just been moved to another folder: DCIM/100Apple
After MUCH crying, and a completely UNHELPFUL apple technician over the phone - this found my photos! Pass it on!!
I just updated my iphone to ios5 and was horrified to see that all my pictures were lost. They had all been downloaded to iphoto on my macbook pro before I updated to ios5, but they were no longer on my iphone.
I did a couple of things, and my pics showed up - it takes a few minutes for them all to show. First I went to settings on my phone and signed into icloud and then my pics started showing up in "events" in Photos on the phone, but the Photo's file was disorganized, and manyof the pictures were black. So, I turned off (powered off) my phone, and when I powered it back on, voila! the pics were in camera roll in Photos.
I tried it, it didn't work, just lost todays stuff too!
Thank you, thank you. I also found a solution in using iExplorer. Photos are now safely stored on my computer.
