iCloud .me email not pushing to iOS 5 devices

First off, if this is a repeat post please direct me to the existing conversation. As I could not find one I wanted to know if anyone is having an issue with iCloud email being pushed to iOS 5 devices? It seems like the push feature only works when the email app is running in the background and even then it runs very slow. Does anyone know if this is a glitch within iOS5, a server issue, settings issue, etc?

I have already tried deleting the account and re-adding it and various other "fixes" but to no avail. I remember the horrendous rollout of MobileMe and I have a feeling that this is simply more of the same.

As anxious as I am for a resolution, I think we can be pretty certain that Apple is not ignoring this issue. They most likely have half a dozen other bug fixes going on that will eventually be part of 5.0.1.

Hopefully, they also include the fix to the m-cell not picking up on the 4S. My other 3 pick it up as soon as we walk in the house, but the 4S has to be "forced" onto it by turning on and off airplane mode. Grrr...

I gave up and went back to Gmail. Apple's mail solution didn't work when they called it MobileMe, and it still does't work as iCloud. Google's solution works as expected. Messages get pushed, and unread counts update across devices. The fact that Apple launched iCloud mail knowing it doesn't work tells me a lot about how seriously they take it.

Jamie, not sure what you are talking about. I've had MobileMe since it came out. It came out of the gate with a few issues. But it's been working flawlessly for me for 2 years. It works incredibly well. I can think of 2 times in 2 years where it didn't push my mail. And both times, a phone restart fixed the problem. And I have 22,000 emails in my inbox.

MobileMe wasn't able to push any folder other than the Inbox and the unread counts never updated properly across devices. Its push was hit and miss.

Remember when Jobs stood on stage and said, "I know what you're asking yourself, why should I trust these people? They're the ones who gave us MobileMe!" and everyone laughed.

Here's a thread on MacRumors that goes from 2008 through this summer of people discusing MobileMe mail problems http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=536883

The solution seemed to be turn off Push and rely on Fetch.

Doesn't matter to me now though. I took the time last night and moved the iCloud messages over to Gmail and turned on forwarded. I'm back to the sweet spot. Alll messages get pushed to Mail.app, iPhone and iPad instantly. Then when I read a message the unread count gets updated across all devices. Plus the Gmail SmartLabels feature in Labs automatically filters your messages into the appropriate labels. It's an incredibly handy feature and iCloud has nothing even close to the calibre of Gmail's filter rules.

Well, I was on MobileMe for a while and it was working flawlessly on my 3GS, iOS 4. Now it's spotty, but I have to say, it works fine 90%+ of the time. I get an occasional moment where it won't push.

I'm curious if it may be worse on different carriers. I'm on at&t, iOS 5, 4S. Seems to working almost perfect now. What network are you guys on?

One other note, in settings > iCloud I have mail set to on, and in settings > store I have all automatic downloads off (not sure if any of those settings affect anything though).

Everything works fine for me, the only problem I get it's the lack of push notification from other apps like my newspaper, etc

But it seems to be a problem from them, cause on my friends devices who has the same apps, and who are on iOS4, it doesn't push either...

The only weird thing I try to find out, is why the battery on the iPhone 4S is so **** short...

MobileMe --> iCloud + iOS 5 = No Push??

Ok, so I seem to have the following findings based on what's mostly said here:

  • it is not an iCloud issue as emails are pushed elsewhere (PC, MAC, ect)
  • it seems to be an iOS 5 isolated issue (but only with email) contacts, calendar etc are all OK
  • iOS 5 Mail App must be running in the backgroud for push to happen
  • if Mail App is closed, push can still happen (very very rarely - hit and miss)
  • mail retrieve settings are definitely and certainly for Push (worked for MobileMe in iOS 4)
  • push email was working fine when i switched to iOS5 - I was using MobileMe and hadn't migrated to iCloud
  • most people experiencing the problem had an old MobileMe account that they migrated to iCloud.

So can I ask, are those experiencing this same issue also migrants from the MobileMe service?

I have to ask cause when I used iOS5 mail with MobileMe, it worked fine - no issues. But once I migrated my MobileMe to iCloud, that's when push became erratic and almost non-existent.

Exactly right to me ... althought there have been some other issues with the migration too (such as duplicate contacts, inconsistencies with the 'sent items' folder and naming of the mail account).

By far the biggest pain is the push problem.

I guess this is a flawed implementation of IOS5 - just need a fix please (and sooner rather than later).
