You should have no problems downloading an installer to your system. If you are executing the installer from the remote location using "open" rather than "save" you may have an issue.

The older version will have to be uninstalled first. There is also an iTunes library file that has to be removed as well as it is incompatible with the older version. I recommend back-threading through this conversation to see how to retrieve any older version of that library which is saved as a back-up, which can be restored. In my case I only have 450 songs so I opted to remove the old library and allow my 10.4 installer to create a new one, and started over.

Personally speaking, I have the storage space so I always keep one copy back of all installer files just for situations such as this. A thumb drive works well for this as well.

You will find many portable apps (programs that operate off a thumb drive) at www.portableapps.com I have a couple of players and an internet radio station player on my thumb drive, including a copy of Open Office.

While generally reliable I always check the developer web site (linked with the updates) as on occasion as these sites may have a release version before the developer site posts it as based on a beta candidate stated to be the release version. They recently posted a copy of a Mozilla product before Mozilla formally released it at their web site, which came about 48 hrs later. Dicey if not careful, and if a developer makes a last minute unannounced change, but generally rthese sites are reliable.

I'm also presently evaluating a freeware called Songbird that is an iTunes look-alike but with less features. I'm not totally convinced I like it, but it is a fall-back position It is based on the Mozilla code so it has add-ons.

There are plenty of players out there.

Thankfully having a couple of those installed proved worthy when testing this iTunes problem - now well into the one-month-and-counting status with no formal word from Apple admitting the issue. Having the other players allowed me to determine the problem was iTunes solely on process of elimination. I was quickly able to eliminate my PC or its sound card as the issue.

I'm a little late to this discussion, but can attest to the same frustration here - iTunes 10.5 is screwing with my music! In fact, it's my wife's music - my music is on my late-model laptop and the quality is fine. However I have had the broken music bugs from IOS5 (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3396468) to contend with on both of our iPod Touch's (!!!). Apple have really screwed up here and it just seems like they're not interested.

And to think they use to say "it just works". As my wife reminds me, if it wasn't for the fact that I know my way around these things a bit, she would be absolutely sunk. Come on, Apple, step up to the mark and sort these issues out. You guys are lame.

The IOS 5 and iTunes 10.5 upgrade processes have been an absolute nightmare. 😠 😠

But I guess you don't care about me anymore as I have bought my iPod and that's that...

Thank you all for your suggestions/help! I uninstalled 10.5 and reinstalled 10.4.1 from filehippo.com. Although, I only got to step 8 of the instructions listed previously, because I got the message that said it coudln't open my library because it only works with the newer version. So I deleted the newest library .itl file, then moved the next newest one out of the Previous iTunes Libraries folder and deleted the date from the file name, so it looked like the other .itl file. Then tried to reopen iTunes and it worked! And all my settings, playlists, etc seem to be the same so far, no changes, no reinstalling music! Yay! Hope everyone else is able to work something out too and Apple comes up with a fix for this soon!

ccsmiles76 - glad to see you have resolved your problems.

But there's no way I am going to go through all this - I EXPECT APPLE TO RESOLVE THIS! I can't believe they haven't. Oh, wait a minute, perhaps I can believe it.

I've lost all confidence in Apple. They are revealing themselves for what they really are: just another American corporation bent on getting money out of consumers enchanted with the brand, and they're not really interested in little ole me. 😟

I'm so glad I finally looked here! I have been searching the web ever since I installed 10.5. I too am having the same problems! Everything works find on Windows as well as on my iPhone and iPods. However, the only things that will play on iTunes are imports direct from STUDIO CD's and purchases from iTunes itself with the exceptions of my Podcasts. None of my Podcasts sound right. I am still on the iPhone 3 and can downgrade to 10.3 but am really hoping a patch is released soon for this anoying issue!

There are now multiple threads running in the forum all speaking to the same problem. You may also want to check your internet streaming radio function within iTunes as many are also reporting that as also being corrupted. It is not working for me in my case.

I also see that I have created a problem here as some links off the forum have been edited out by a forum host.

Uncertain if that is another "user" or if it is someone at Apple. Hopefully the latter, and if not, someone with some level of access to report this up.

I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advise.

As for me, it's been one month now. I think its time for an "Occupy Apple" situation. Maybe people need to be talking to their local newspapers and TV stations to force a response or acknowledgement of the problem? In some states you may have legal recourse fo rthe "damage" that the upgrade has caused to your computer.

I for one will start contacting my local radio and TV stations.

Furthermore, there doesn't appear to be anywhere on-line on an Apple site where customers can complain about this (or any other) problem.

After more wasted time going round in circles on the "support" website, I found a page to submit a complaint (and also requesting a reply), only to be met with:

Thank you for your feedback on iTunes.

We cannot respond to you personally, but please know that your message has been received and will be reviewed

by the iTunes Team. If we need to follow up with you on your ideas for improving iTunes, we will contact you directly.”

Does Apple think it is beyond reproach?

More wasted time phoning yet another operator finally (and somewhat reluctantly on their part) revealed an address that complaints can be addressed to:

For what its worth, my letter is on its way to them now, I suggest others do the same.
