Solution: iTunes 10.5 using 100% CPU / Not backing up your iPhone.

This solution has been documented on this forum by several people, but the solution is usually deep in multiple threads. I really don't know who came up with it first, but it does indeed work.

I had an issue with iTunes.exe, APSDaemon, and AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe using 100% CPU per core. (Showed as 25% in Task Manager.)

I could not backup my iPhone and the CPU spike happened as soon as iTunes 10.5 was started on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

This solved it.

Sounds stupid but works:

1. Quit iTunes.

2. Start an elevated command prompt (Start Menu -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Right Click "Command Prompt" -> "Run as Administrator")

3. Once in the command prompt, type "netsh winsock reset" and hit ENTER.

4. Reboot your machine.

5. Restart iTunes.

6. ???

7. Profit!

My home PC is windows XP.

However, spent a LONG time to update to OS5 on my ipad. After up to iOS5, and restore, only left the settings and all the apps is gone and need to sync back from my PC.

This really take a long time. like the msgbox that prompt up when you want to up to OS5, it stated "the whole process may take more than 1hour".

Imagine I start to perform the up at around 1am. By the time the apps are put in, it's around 3am. Then I realise the photos library are not inside. I did a sync of 1600+ pictures. In the end, I went to sleep first and to check only in the morning. So not sure what time the pictures sync ended.

However I did noticed that when itunes is performing the backup or restore, at certain time, the PC resources did shoot up to 80%+.

I "took the plunge" with my Vista 64 install of iTunes 10.5. Also had multiple issues with backup and synching once the new iTunes was installed. The iTunes store was not displayed correctly, etc. I ran the command and my iTunes store view came back as I expected it to. I also did a couple of syncs and backups before attempting the IOS5 update. My iPhone 3GS is restoring right now....Crossing my fingers......

I hope someone out there reads this and takes it into account. I have spent hours and hours uninstalling itunes, bonjour, etc. and reinstalling itunes every time an update appeared... I was bored. When 10.5 came I went for it, not thinking. and I've spent hours and hours on end uninstalling and reinstalling, just to finally find out this fix actually did not work with 10.5. Great.

Then I found this other fix, with the warning that my antivirus might not work anymore. Tried anyway... No better! Stupid fix doesnt work (Windows XP SP3), wastes my time. Not only itunes and applemobiledevice running at full CPU, but APS something joined them!

Is Apple doing something for this? another fix? are they trying to get us buy macs? I was looking forward to ordering my new iphone 4s... why should I? Waste more time trying to fix bloody itunes?

No way.

Nakis,

On the page of these discussion forums Apple mentions this is for Apple user community to share tips. So they never come here to check what people are discussing. They are too arrogant to do that as folks are ready to stand in line and wad out cash to buy their products from day one.

I have tried everything possible...unistalling, re-installing, netsh command etc, none of that crap works for me on Vista.

I still have APSDaemon.exe and Applemobiledevice.exe consuming 50% each of CPU time. itunes.exe takes what little is left.

I am putting a link to another thread on this same issue.

Only help is from someone who still has there device under warranty and running into this issue to call Apple tech support as that call is free. My ipod Touch and iphone 4 are both outside the warranty period.

Are there any other ideas out there?

I've tried the command prompt fix several times. I've also tried:

1. Resetting router

2. Re-istalling iTunes

3. Multiple registry scans/cleans

iTunes still immediately maxes out at 100% CPU. I assume this is the reason that my iOS5 WiFi sync isn't working (it also renders any other open applications useless).

I've searched everywhere on multiple boards and haven't found anything that works.

Thanks.
