Iphone 3GS slow after update to iOS 5

After updated to iOS 5 my Iphone 3GS became generel slow.

Graphics and starting apps are slow. Some apps have now up to 10-15 seconds start time.

I thought closing the Iphone and restart clould help, but NO.

Yeah, like OS windows upstarts. 😁

Ok. processor not the same as new Iphone 4s.

I started to regret my update to iOS5.

Hi Jim,

I am happy that there are quiet a few people suffering from the same problems with ios5 on 3GS ... some say it's a minority who got troubles with their 3GS, however probably the "silent majority" does not come out of the box.

The biggest problem I got is the fact that my Iphone does not see 3G network anymore since upgrade (only Edge) which was NEVER a problem with ios4, so it lost it's basic utility to be able to surf outside a wireless network range. Fact that my device slowed down in practically all applications is the least of my worries. I spent numerous hours now to change settings, clear cache, follow advises etc etc

Would really like to follow your advise about let out voices be heard... however the link you provided or apple.com/feedback/iphone leads nowhere, nor I can find in itunes where to contact/mail to apple. So we continue to shout in "the vacuum" without a significant result ...

called Applesupport expresslane, informed tier2 about this issue, they are aware of it, but they do not have any info on 5.1 or updates there of. Again my advise would be to submit feeback via itunes or apple.com/feedback/iphone or call support 800myiphone... Let out voices be heard

I too am having these issues. I had one 3gs with insurance at the end of my 2 yr contract I had it replaced for a new one and both of them had this sluggish behaviour with IOS 5.

My main issue with this, other than its a bind waiting for something to happen after pressing an icon or a letter on the keyboard etc, I've recently started playing facebook/zynga poker a lot lot more than I used to cos its very convenient on my phone through my wifi connection, but, I've lost loads of chips because the game play becomes unresponsive and eventually crashes. I play in sit n go tournaments where top 3 finish gives decent payback but my iphone starts freezing and then it crashes and I loos my seat at the table and all my chips, my stake and any prize money I would have won.

Also, other players at the table get annoyed with me because I cant do anything and the timer goes down all the way before it folds on my behalf and the next player at the table gets his chance to play.

I turned iCloud off straight away after update and not for handset speed issues but because I dont have any other device that would benefit from using iCloud and just like bluetooth, if you dont use it, dont activate it.

After reading through this thread, I've turned off every notification for apps that I dont use or need notifactions for so I'll see if that changes anything.

I do like the response I read earlier although I cant temember who posted it, about the 4S having a superior processor and memory and it does make a lot of sense, but what would also have made a lot of sense would have been to have a warning when upgrading to IOS5 on a 3GS explaining the potential problems.

sharpeye,

I presume that Apple would have warned about slowdowns had they known. However, I think these issues, which are eperienced by only a small minority of people, would probably have been unforeseen. The key point is that the vast majority of 3GS owners are perfectly happy with iOS5 performance. This proves that there's no problem with the platform itself but rather some bugs that need to be fixed. That's an important point. It's frustrating for those who have the problem but let's see what 5.1 does to fix it.

Thanks for the info and it is appreciated. I spent the last 3 years repairing mobile phones which gave me a very good insight into which phones to avoid having for myself as I knew which ones were unreliable or had either hardware or software issues which most people don't know to look out for ie. earpiece faults on the Motorola defy or everything can go faulty on a Sony Ericsson due to software.

The iPhone stood out from the rest by a country mile and after owning my 3GS for over 2 years I see no reason to ever change it. I even get it that IOS 5 may be pushing the 3GS more than its used to and accepted the sluggish behaviour with no problem as I like the IOS 5 and some of its features but all that being said, Facebook/zynga poker is doing my head in at how many chips I've lost as a result of the problems.

I seem to loose wifi strength and its freezing and eventually crashes and theres nothIng I can do when this starts and I know it's all pretend chips and pretend money but it's a great pass time and its very frustrating for me and everyone else at the table I'm playing at and I could just play on my laptop but the beauty of the iPhone is how convenient it makes the Internet without the need for a computer.

I love my phone and would never trade it for any android phone but my zynga issue just makes me love it a little bit less and I don't need an upgrade to a 4S if anything I need a downgrade to IOS 4.

Hello, my brother had this same problem of the iPhone 3gs restarting cuz of the ios5. I tired enabling the 3G n dat but it only lasted for a few days them start rebooting itself again.... Try this method not sure how long it will last for but. Good so far.

General/reset.....Erase all data and settings.

On the iphone......Set up as a brand new iPhone.

Then log in with your apple i.d on your phone.

Once done, restore it from the pc and then sync ur backup with your apple I.d(if u hav 1) if u don't have back up saved it don't matter.
