Iphone 3GS slow after update to iOS 5

Has anybody experiencing the issue been able to test iOS 5.1 yet? iTunes Update Server seems overloaded right now...

Wondering the same thing please update results of upgrading, don't forget to save SHSH if need to go back to 5.0.1 if needed

I just installed iOS 5.1 (OTA) on my 3GS 32gb and everything seems to be running MUCH smoother than it was on iOS 5.0.1... I can actually scroll with Safari and use Maps without a 5 second lag!!!

I had two problems with iOS 5 on my 3GS. One the slowness and sluggishness with its many incarnations and the other that every time I tried to sync contacts from the cloud my phone basically ground to a near halt as it spent hours and hours trying to download my address book and ultimately failed.

I just applied the iOS 5.1 update and it appears to be faster, but even more important to me, I see in the log files that they did some kind of clean-up of data on my phone and then it was able to sync contacts with the cloud. I now have all my data back and am very, very happy.

Apple missed an opportunity to manage all our unhappiness, limit the public complaining and Apple bashing, and save a few customers if they had just communicated with us a bit along the way. I know from the keynote they've sold something like 315 milliion devices and the relative few, by percentage, of us having problems may not seem like a loud complaint, but it still seems a missed opportunity to service their image.

Anyway, after all this struggle and frustration, it looks to be working quite well. Opened a bunch of apps and I'm not seeing any slowdown either.

BTW, all you arrogant numbskulls who got on this board and sounded off about "old" 3GS that we shouldn't expect to work should take note that a fix in the software appears to have fixed the problem. You are all now cordially invited to sit down and shut up. But, of course, I say that in the friendliest way possible. 🙂

Updated: I along with privious 3GS users have upgraded to 5.1 and agree it is quicker and almost as fast as 4.3.5 my recommendation is to upgrade via itunes USB not OTA, found the install stalled performing upgrade OTA

Some initial feedback from myself: iOS 5.1 is way better than 5.0.1. I have everything enabled (iCloud, Photo Stream, Notifications, Automatically send diagnostic and usage messages, ...) and I have no slugginess, no lost calls either so far. The only problem I still have is with the camera: sometimes (not always) when I open the camera from the lock screen, the camera freezes for a few seconds after the first shot. After about 10 seconds everything starts working again.

iOS 5.1 running fine. On the camera delay could that be the GPS taking its time finding satelittes, I don't get the delay with location dservices turned off.

Thanks Tim, I like my 3GS so much think I'll put a new battery in next trip to Mexico!

I've not been posting on this forum for a good few weeks or more - but I have been keeping an eye on recent posts. I too downloaded the new software 5.1 this morning. So far so good I am happy to say. It has definitely speeded up the performance of opening apps and browsing. However, I do still have a little lagging on texting - it still cant keep up with me - but this does appear to improve the longer you type??? Whereas before it was ok to start with and the longer you typed the slower it got - so something has happend... Should I need to tell you more I'll be back to post again - but as I said - so far so good - there is a definite improvement. 🙂 Phew!

From everything I've heard those already on 5 or 5.0.1 should upgrade to 5.1. Those on 4 - hard to say.

My 3GS is a buggy, laggy pain in the neck since I upgraded to 5.1 from IOS 4.3.2.

- Apps crash - maybe they're not updated yet. TuneIn Radio won't run, NYTimes (always been buggy) crashes.

- Camera is slow, switching from still to video is slow. BTW other camera apps, like Camera Sharp, have not slowed down.

May need to try disabling location services on everything.

I update my wifes 3gs to ios 5.1 last night. It now takes about 20-30 seconds to unlock/lock, cant make phone calls, cant use the camera, majority of the apps do not start or crash and the phone itself it will restart now and again!

The phone was working fine before hand, but had never upgraded to ios 5, and jumped straight to ios 5.1 and everything has gone kaput!

Has anyone who has had similar issues found a solution? Or is there a way to downgrade the software i.e reinstall ios 4.?.?

Please help save my wifes phone and inturn youll be helping save my marriage!

did you perform the upgrade over the air or via itunes?

It does seem that disabling Location Services helped with a lot of apps that use location, so it skips trying to do that. You might try that.
