iOS 5 Crash Issues

Since upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPad 1 (3G+WiFi) I am getting a lot of crashes in both Mail and Safari.

In Mail, it crashes on first start-up and then loading it a second time I get in fine. This is repeated after moving away from mail and going back in

In Safari, this appears to be on different webpages (including Apple iMessage verify mail) and happens during browsing. I can barely recall crashes on iOS 4 but find them a lot on iOS 5.

Anyone else seeing the same thing?

I will throw my hat in the ring too (but I do not see any responses from Apple so does it do any good?). My wife and I are both early adopters. We both have an IPAD 1 3g+WIFI we acquired in April and May 2010. We both upgraded to ISO 5 in late October. Can't trust the ipad to do anything more than read emails because responding more than one or two lines we risk an email crash. Safari crashes fairly often (3 - 4 times per day).

Trends? I use MS Exchange for email but my wife does not . she is just POP3 email crashes on both IPADS a lot (5 - 6 times per day). Seems to happen when a new email comes in while we are composing a new or reply email. This happens all the time since we both get a lot of email. We are reverting to opening up the old PC laptop to do email of any consequence.

Any suggestions on what to do? Apple .. is it time for us to switch to an Android tablet to get some stability back? Too bad for this major faux pas on IOS5 as I was becoming an Apple convert (sort of .. .as least for hand held mobile devices)? I thought Apple would have rushed an emergency fix out in the last week or two.

Add me to this list, as well! I wrote a blog post about the issues early on and had a lot of folks confirm the same slowness and crashes there. Then, when I tried to open a thread here, Apple deleted it saying this is not the place to discuss "product issues" or "feature requests".

Glad to see they are allowing this thread! The performance of the iPad after the iOS 5 upgrade is *unacceptable*!!!

Same problem here, especially when HTML5 code is running — cf new Facebook or G+ desktop layout within any browser, YouTube videos, apps built with HTML5 code — kinda ironic though as Apple denies Flash for iDevice users because it was thought to be too buggy and now they hijack their own viable response to Flash by making iDevices unresponsive as soon as an HTML5 code is launched…!?

Feeling more and more like a paying BETA tester :/

PS: Has anyone contacted Apple yet concerning this issue?

A google search shows that this bug (or, "these bugs") are being widely discussed. Understandably. We generally do not expect such shotty releases that result in this significant of a degredation in performance -- and most importantly, usability -- with Apple products. It's at once a testament to their general development history, and an admonishment of their current screw up.

I used Process Killer to monitor memory usage on my iPad, particularly when apps crashed during start up. I found that every time the apps crashed, memory usage at was nearly 100% -- with "Wired" memory (memory required for the OS and graphics) consuming as much ~180mb. Even with minimal apps running in the background I rarely had more than a few mb of free memory available.

What appears to be happening is that when apps are launched, there's simply not enough free memory available to even initialize the data/graphics/etc at startup.

I've have since turned off iCloud services (deleted the account entirely) and things are back to running relatively smooth. The wired memory consumption immediately dropped to ~100mb, freeing up the difference. I'll update this thread if things change.

Thank you so much for your posting. I turned off/deleted Icloud and my IPAD 2 is running normally at least for now. I was finally able to access and update 3 apps in less then a minute that would have taken an hour. I can now run Safari without it taking forever for a page to load and that's if it loaded at all. I too will update this if anything changes.

I had this problem too on my gen 1 iPad. Mail would crash, Safari would crash, App Store would crash, everything would crash, and typing was very laggy and unresponsive.

Someone suggested doing a factory reset and setting up my iPad as a new device. This was a real PITA, especially as I have about 600 apps, and I lost a lot of configuration in the process. It took me the bulk of a weekend to get vaguely close to where I had been and is still a work in progress. But it has made a big difference in stability so far. I still get occasional crashes but they are now infrequent.

One thing I have noticed that did not happen before is that the wireless network seems to get hung up, sometimes for more than a minute. That may account too for some of the problems.
