iOS 5 Crash Issues

Since upgrading to iOS 5 on my iPad 1 (3G+WiFi) I am getting a lot of crashes in both Mail and Safari.

In Mail, it crashes on first start-up and then loading it a second time I get in fine. This is repeated after moving away from mail and going back in

In Safari, this appears to be on different webpages (including Apple iMessage verify mail) and happens during browsing. I can barely recall crashes on iOS 4 but find them a lot on iOS 5.

Anyone else seeing the same thing?

Before you take it back:

1. What model iPad is it?

2. What version of iOS?

3. Have you done a cold boot (power off/on) of the iPad? (I.e. Press sleep/wake button and hold it down until red "Slide to power off" slider appears, do that) Then power it on again using sleep/wake button. This clears out everything in RAM and reboots from scratch (just like rebooting a Mac or PC by powering them off and then on again), it often clears such problems.

4. If above doesn't work try a reset of the iPad - with iPad on press and hold the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously for about ten seconds (until the Apple logo appears), then release them and let it go through the normal boot process.

5. If none of these work then try restoring your iPad from iTunes - plug it into computer with USB cable and launch iTunes then under "Summary" tab click "Restore iPad..." button and it will restore the iPad software from scratch.

After dealing with this for the past year I have found that its not just Safari. The same thing happens with Google Chrome, Atomic, and apps that have an embedded browser (i.e.; Pulse). I've also found that certain sites consistently cause the browser(s) to crash (buzzfeed, TPM, and others).

I suspect that the root of the issue is poor JavaScript programming on some sites. As a developer, I have had the Facebook API crash Firefox on my PC and MacBook in the past. I just wish there was an easy way to find the violating script in safari.
