But I don't see the necessity of that. When on Wifi, doesn't the iPhone stop using cellular data anyway?
No, not with AT&T because you can talk and surf at the same time, right? Can't do this with Verizon.

Yes, when the phone is on WiFi, it stops using cellular data, regardless of whether it's AT&T or Verizon.
For internet access yes, but visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the carrier's cellular data or internet network only. If you miss a call or don't answer a call while your iPhone is connected to an available wi-fi network and the caller leaves a voicemail, it will be downloaded via the carrier's cellular data or internet network.
If you send or receive MMS while connected to an available wi-fi network, the MMS is exchanged via your carrier's cellular data or internet network. iMessages would be exchanged via the wi-fi you are connected to for internet access.

Right. Voice is still active on AT&T.
Huh? Voice is still active on either varitey of phone when it's on WiFi. Most data (see Allan's explaination) is going over WiFi, not cellular. That's the same whether the phone is AT&T or Verizon.
Really? Back when Verizon iPhone service was announced, one of the arguments for AT&T service was that users can talk and access wifi at the same time, reportedly not available with Verizon. I think I read several tech reports saying this was the case. Not so any longer? I really HATE AT&T!
You can talk and access AT&T's cellular network for internet access at the same time when connected to AT&T's 3G network. This is completely separate from accesing the internet via an available wi-fi network. You can talk and access the internet via an available wi-fi network at the same time with AT&T and Verizon.

What i'd really like to see, however, is some mechanism to set a toggle like "When connected to WIFI, disable Cellular Data & 3G"
Not to pick on Rob, but see what happens when you introduce a completely different issue to a thread? You introduce mass confusion in the posts that follow. I know it was an innocent deviation, done that myself a few times.
This thread has nothing to do with wi-fi, airplane mode, or the ability to surf the web while you talk (BTW, you still can't do that on Verizon due to CDMA technology). This thread is about the 4S' lack of a switch to manually disable 3G so that the user can use EDGE instead.
I realize this. I already know the diff between the 3G toggle and Cell data toggle. I was just responding to someone else who brought up the other issue.
NO! Nothing to do with wifi. On UMTS (3G/GSM such as with AT&T), you can talk and use data using the carrier's data connection. On CDMA (such as with Verizon), if you're on a call, you lose said cell data connection till you hang up. Wifi is *always* connected, regardless of carrier.
Yeah, my bad for responding as well. Too bad there is no PM system on this message board so you can simply respond to someone outside of the topic.
In any case, I think this particular discussion can be finally put to rest anyway because the 3G toggle is confirmed to be re-implemented on the 4S.
I also want this feature ... I am on wifi all the time and i do not need the speed of 3g ... With 3g I get nothing more then shorter battery life ...
The toggle feature IS COMING BACK!!! Next iOS software update will have it.
I lost my 3G network on my iPhone 4s 10.5, and had no option to turn it back on. It just disapeared. I found out that if you turn SIRI off, you phone automatically reconnects to 3G. Stupid issue, hopefully this helps.
Guys is it confirmed to have it in the next update ??
