iPhone 4S screen tint

Got a new iPhone 4S this morning, and when I put it next to my old iPhone 4 I discovered the screen was much 'nicer' on the old iPhone. When I say nicer, its kind of got a really yellow tint to the screen on the 4S, whites are where you notice it the most for example the email looks far nicer on the iPhone 4 screen. All other colours look quite washed out. Anyone else got this problem?

I to have the Yellow Screen iPhone 4s problem. I went to the apple store to compair my phone to the ones in the store and found the phones in the store looked nice like my old iphone 4. I asked one of the sales people there if he could see a differance and he agreed that my phone looked yellow compaired to the ones in the store and now i have a appointment to get the phone replaced.

I also went to a att store to compair my iphone to theres and the phones they had also looked nice not yellow like mine. The sales person at att told me that my phone is defective and that i need to go to apple to have the phone replaced.

I just hope that the new phone has a nice looking scrren that is not yellow. They are out there because the ones in the stores look good. I will not accept this ugly looking yellow screen.

Are you saying there is a difference in the way cameras render pics between the two types of screens?--as though pics from two cameras could be viewed side by side on a neutral monitor, and one would be warmer than the other?

I wouldn't expect that. I would expect a pic taken with a blue screen to appear yellow on a yellow screen, and vice versa. Just as any pic from a third source, or any screen in the iOS for that matter, would appear bluish or yellowish, depending on which phone it's viewed on.

As for the comment by someone else that Apple will never address this, I think they will if the media forces the issue. I want to hear what they have to say.

On my 2nd iPhone 4S, this one just as much, if not more yellow than my 1st one. To the people that are saying it gets better after a couple of weeks.... Is getting better, or is that you're just getting used to it? I'm not so sure it's a "glue" thing, i hope it is, because this is really upsetting. It really almost does make me not even want to use my iPhone, the yellow screen makes me sick. Really hoping it gets better.

I just got the 4S. The screen isn't even close to my 3G!

When I go outside in the dark the screen automatically

gets LESS brightness?? ***?? I compared the nightime

outside viewing with my old 3G and I'm ready to take the 4S

back and choke the $35 restocking charge. I also connected

both to my home WIFI and simultaneously opened a webpage

that I hadn't been to before. Yeah, the 4S is faster.. a little...

who cares. I'm going to take it back and get the 4. Junk....

Just got an iPhone 4S 64GB Black - did not notice it at first - but when side by side with iPhone 4 I have a faint yellowishness to it - and the whites are not as bright.

How can the colors be "more accurate" if white is not white?

no I don't think you need a colorimeter to adjust the color pofile on your phone - I "calibrate" my computer monitors using the color sensors I was born with - and never had any trouble calibrating them to my preference.

when flipping through photos it does not seem as noticable -but when browsing the web and email etc - it is noticable - not sure if I believe it will fade over time - though maybe my perception of it will fade as I spend less time comparing them side by side.

does seem odd that Apple would choose to make the change - not sure if it is dramatic enough for me to be unhappy about it - not thrilled at the moment - especially since I did not see any of these posts or reports prior to purchase.

it is definetly faster - will need to see how well the other improvements make up for the tint

I got back to Apple Store in Glasgow today to exhange my black 4s 16GB. The salesperson who was very friendly last time acted like a true salesperson this time.

I brought my old iPhone 3 with me and showed him the difference. The difference is immense. Again, he did recognize the difference. As many people here suggested, it is not noticeable in the first place. Plus, you should stop yourself comparing your device with other 4ss those potentially have better screen quality. If you comply with this simple rule you will be fine and will get used to yours after a while.

Anyway, the salesperson this time argued that I should not expect to see all devices with the same screen quality as they are not "identical", he said. Well, this argument obviously fails. Devices must be identical. At least the one I bought should has the same screen colors and quality with the those on the display. Please do spend some time and check the devices on the display with your own one. I am an Apple fan. So I do not go any further on complainting about my experience at the store. However, I must point out that he was not happy exhancing devices because he told me he must be selling them with contracts.

There are couple of important points that I want to raise.

First, I should not be spending time writing my experience. This is ridicoluos. Apple has to make sure that we are fully satisfied with the product.

Second, I should not be writing words like "better", "noticeable", "potentially" and "identical". We are talking about electronic devices which come out from mass production. These devices must be identical otherwise production line should be checked internally and externally. Difference on quality can never be an issue (nowadays you even never have a "better" BigMac at McDonalds, even they are made quickly by human beings. Whereas the components of these devices are electronically generated and enter into mass production).

I bought this new 4s to "upgrade" my experience with iPhone, in particular, and Apple services, in general. However, as far as the screen quality is concerned, my 3 years old 3G has a much better quality, brightness, and it is not yellowish at all.

I will keep my 4s for another 14 days and exchange it if I feel I angry one morning. In the meantime, I will wait and see what Apple will do about this issue.

UPDATE form my first post.

Went to the apple store for my genius bar apptment. Showed them my iphone 4s with the yellow screen and had them compair it to my old iphone 4 and there iphone 4s on display. They did agree that my iphone 4s had a yellow tint to it comparied to there display models and my iphone 4.

Now this is where it gets really bad. They were happy to change out the phone for me but we went through 3 replacment phones and they all had the yellow tint to them. Another genius saw what we were doing and said she had the same problem just the other day, where she went through a bunch of new phones and they all had the yellow tint too.

She said that she thinks that they got a bad batch of phones and that they where all going to have the yellow tint. They suggested that i call apple care to get a replacement from them in hopes that the replacement from them will come from a differnt batch and not have the yellow tint problem.

After 1 hour on the phone with apple care, most of the time on hold i have another iphone 4s on the way. Fingers crossed that it does not have the yellow tint.

I will update again when i receive the replacement.

Bad news to the ones who hope to get better screens on the new iPhone 4 models (not 4S!). I have a friend who got her iPhone 4 last week and has the same yellow tint issue. This gives me the impression that apple either changed their screen manufacturer to a lower quality one to save cost or due to the high demand a new supplier is added and shipping bad quality screens. But the main thing is that apple probably uses the same manufacturer for the 4 and 4S models which make sense, obviously a cost effective solution.

I got an iPhone 4 about a year ago and it still has fantastic screen in every way, brightness, contrast, colours and more importantly the white is clear. Got my 4S on 10th Nov and noticed the yellow screen straight away. Started to try fixing it by leaving the device running all day(!) for 3 or 4 days having slide shows with max brightness on and autobrightness off. I did this because there was a gossip about a glue issue that the glue used for the screens didn’t set properly. I can now confirm the screen quality did not change at all in a whole week with at least 60 hours running.

I decided to take phone back to the store where I showed the geniuses the two devices put side by side and they agreed straight away that the new screen looks much worse than the 1 year old iPhone 4. They were very helpful and offered to replace it, so they did. Guess what, the new has the same yellowish screen. The guys offered to get another one from stock but rather than making half their stock “second hand” by opening up numerous boxes, I said I’ll return in 2 weeks and have a replacement then, when fingers crossed they will have received 2 or 3 new shipments and have the screens fixed.

To sum up, currently all iPhone 4 and 4S models have screen quality issues. Hopefully apple will sort it out with the manufacturer asap. Until then, I keep taking mine back every 2 weeks. There is one more reason why I am determined to get the right screen is because another friend got his 4S about a month ago on the second day it was launched and his screen is good. The display models in the store are also good, they all come from the first batch which means something went wrong about two weeks after the first items were launched.

I will pick up a replacement 4S on 1st Dec and post my findings.

LOL, you'd have to take a picture of your actual phone for us to be able to tell.

On my phone, for example, those look very yellow. But that's because MY phone has the problem. Honestly, if you can't tell whether it has the problem or not, why go looking for it?

By the way, to all those who think it will go away or it's glue drying: it's NOT. I've had my phone since launch and turned it up to full brightness about a week later. I have left it like that since, and it's still yellow as ever. I'm trading it in as soon as I find the time.

woow thats bad... You should definitely take it back. I'm so lucky I got a good one. Apple should do something about this problem. I had the same problem with my iPad 2 I took it back 3 times and finally got one that didn't have the tint.. I was afraid that the same thing was going to happen with my iPhone 4S but this time I was very lucky.. Thanks for sharing. 🙂

FYI: i used this link to compare the color contrast and whites b/w my 4S and 3G. When comparing the white screen, the 4s looked more true to white, while my 3G has a really cool/bluish tinge to it, which strained my eye (IMO). I also notice the colors were more vibrant on the 4S when the same colors were compared side-by-side.

Whether you have a warm tint or not, maybe this test will help you decide on the quality of your new iPhone. http://appleservedup.com/

Yeah, my 4S does have a very slight warm hue compared to two other 4s phones I have looked at, but my white looks more natural (without the strain). I think it comes down to personal preference. I thought I had a dud, but after doing some research, I am keeping mine afterall. Plus, with all the recent posts, I don't want to risk getting a really yellow one. As the saying goes, the grass may not be greener (whiter) on the other side. :)

Good luck everyone of finding the phone that suits your taste.
