iPhone 4S screen tint

Got a new iPhone 4S this morning, and when I put it next to my old iPhone 4 I discovered the screen was much 'nicer' on the old iPhone. When I say nicer, its kind of got a really yellow tint to the screen on the 4S, whites are where you notice it the most for example the email looks far nicer on the iPhone 4 screen. All other colours look quite washed out. Anyone else got this problem?

Same here. I bought two iPhone 4S's recently, and both have displays that are inferior to my year old iPhone. In comparison they have a red/yellow tint, a washed out flat looking image, and a much narrower color gamut. When viewing the exact same photos side by side with them and my iPhone 4 the difference is striking. Reds are not really red. For example, where something should be pure bright red it has a very noticeable orange component to it by comparison, which is wrong. The rest of the colors are muted as well (kinda like the MacBook Air's). The images also look flat with little contrast.

It's pretty obvious whoever made my particular iPhone 4's display did not make the ones in my iPhone 4S's. They are completely different quality wise. My only guess is that someone gave Apple a really good discount on these, and they figured why not since most iPhone 4 owners have a similar quality screen anyways and 3GS upgraders will just be in awe of finally owning a retina display.

Nothing yet!?! I wonder if they even come on here and read any of this. Maybe there is someone that we need to contact at apple that can really look into this. Apple care just wants to keep replcing the phone with no answer as to why they are all yellow now. same with the apple store. I am at the point now that i am just going to sell my iphone 4s and just use the 4 and i am going to start looking at other smart phones.

Apple is quickly becoming the company of "some of our $649 phones will display whites in yellow due to a manufacturing variance, that's normal", a stark difference from the company founded by a guy who was anal about fonts and shades of green.

The yellow tint issue is a lost cause. Every single iPhone I tried to replace my iPhone with suffers from the same problem (of course all the ones on display show perfect whites). Time to phase out the iPhone, I'm starting to look at alternatives, a great disappointent after investing much money in iPhone apps.

My black iPhone 4S 64Gb is from Canada, but I bought it in Russia's online store. The same yellowish and muted screen as the rest. Unfortunately, my previous iPhone 4 has been sold. The official iPhone sales in Russia have not begun yet, and the seller refused to replace my iPhone. I am very sad, because I couldn't sell 4S with a such defect anyway. A lot of money wasted 😟

Maybe, instead of our previous iPhone, we should compare our yellow iPhones to the competition's displays and share those results. Heck, I have a 5 year old entry level DSLR that has a nicer looking screen. For one, it can show a wider range of colors, and has decent contrast. By comparison, my two new 4S's look like an old washed out ATM machine. OK, maybe not an old ATM machine, but still not as good as the screen on my Nikon D40.

Hi guys, I just got my iPhone 4s few days ago, my phone has the same situation as the yellow tint looks horrible compare to my previous iPhone 4, unfortunately I bought it from someone through singapore apple online store, and I'm staying in Malaysia, just worried abt how am I going to make a replacement or something without going all the way to Singapore to soft out this problem, has somebody experienced it as I did and would like to give any suggestion?

I second that. Returning my third yellow white 32Gb iPhone 4S. The Macbook Pro I am working on is the fourth in a row that was send to me. The three previous ones all had terrible yellow, low contrast, small color gamut Samsung screens. To be honest, it was quite a ****. Now the story starts again from scratch. I am having a very very bad consumer experience here.

As a long time Apple user I am losing my faith. I am resposible for big volumes of mac equipment purchased by myself, companies I work for, family etc.

It seems Apple is already losing it's touch becoming just an average technology pusher with much to expensive products.

I am the creative professional Apple build it's image on.

Time to start looking at the competition.

I am sad 😟

What's ironic is that Steve Job's biographer talked about how when Steve was a boy his dad instilled this sense of quality in everything you do. Even when building a fence, you make the side no one will see just as nice as the one they will. No one will see it, but you'll know it's there and know you did the best you could. Well, it seems Apple still makes the back side of the fence incredibly beautiful, but the side everyone looks at is done as cheap as possible sometimes.

I know Apple has to accept multiple suppliers for certain parts to fill demand, but the variation in display quality from one to the next is what gets me.

Hey buddy,

My white 4S screen also has a blue tint to it, as do all of the other white 4Ss that I checked across 3 Apple stores ... I'm surprised that no-one else has pointed out this blue tint thing.

You appear to be happy with it but it's really bothering me now. Tomorrow is the 14th day since I bought it from the Apple store and therefore I have to decide whether or not to return it. After 14 days I don't want to be offered a refurb as a replacement.

When checking the 4Ss in the Apple stores, the screens in the black models were perfect ... whites were white and as a result contrast and sharpness was better. It's just I really like the white model and don't want to have to go with black.

Do you think Apple will address screen tints (be it yellow or blue) in futures software updates? Have they done so before? I am completely new to the iPhone so I don't know if this is something that they've done before. Also, is there anything that I can do to "reset" the screen?

Other than the blue tint, my phone is perfect. No dead pixels or dust, no battery problem, calls are crystal clear ... so this is why I am so hesitant to return the phone.

Any advice, or info would be greatly appreciated.

All the best ...

Tommy

Hey, I think you have this a little turned around. 'Blue Tint' is what we like to see. It presents a bright white and the blacks are black. 'Yellow Tint' can go un-noticed but find a 4S with a yellow tint and place it next to an iPhone 4 or a 'Blue Tint' 4S and you will be able to see a washed out, dull, yellow tinted screen.

iPhone 4 had this issue for a hot second but it cleared up within days, it is to be believed.

4S however is a separate issue. I have compared my

phone to MANYY iPhone 4's and 4S's ... I'm on my 3rd

replacement phone, apple store employees act clueless

and I don't feel that I have been handled seriously.

Both white and black models (4S) are equipped with this issue.

Hmnn, suspect if you had an expensive iPhone 4S with a yellow screen you might not be happy.

Imagine having a bit of an issue with a screen on an apple product you owned and being told it was something like 'normal variation'. Like the issue you had with your screen on your MBP 13", :

From your pos elsewheret:

Mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro that I purchased in August '09.

I've noticed that there are faint diagonal lines down the left edge and partially down the right edge of my screen, accompanied by a slightly smudgy look (on a white background, it looks slightly grayed). Everything is irregular, the extent of the smudged look, and the diagonal lines, while appearing to be spaced evenly apart (I haven't measured), are broken and inconsistent. Sort of like uneven length dashes.

You weren't happy then were you? Presumably your complaint was justified and not normal screen variation of any sort.

You are quite right of course, provided C39 yellow screen iPhone owners don't make any comparisons with other iPhones, or preferably any other phones, they won't see it as a problem. How does that expression run "in the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king".

Stangely, I still haven't had anyone take my offer of a swap - my lovely C39 yellow screen for their nasty cold version at the other end of the 'normal variation'. Do you have one to swap?

Nov 27, 2011 6:20 PM in response to DanM99

To call this amount of variation in display quality normal, and to say it's all in your head is misleading. For one, all the color tinted displays I've compared my neutral one with don't show the same range of colors. There's definately some color data missing with these. Zooming in and comparing images side-by-side, there's noticable color clipping occuring in the tinted displays especially in the reds and blues. The reduced color gamut is why people have complained colors on their new iPhone now look dull and lack the same kind of saturation. If you've always had an iPhone with this kind of display, then you wouldn't notice a difference. But, those of us who have one with a untinted neutral screen the difference is not acceptable - not on an Apple product.

Nov 27, 2011 6:36 PM in response to SdeS

Stalk much, SdeS? Actually, Apple replaced the entire top half of my MacBook because that screen was broken. This is a different issue.

The color cast issue is still variation in the backlighting. I didn't say it is "all in your head". However, if you continue to put screens side by side and compare them relatively, you're just going to drive yourself nuts. You probably can't find two with exactly the same color.
