iPhone 4S screen tint

Got a new iPhone 4S this morning, and when I put it next to my old iPhone 4 I discovered the screen was much 'nicer' on the old iPhone. When I say nicer, its kind of got a really yellow tint to the screen on the 4S, whites are where you notice it the most for example the email looks far nicer on the iPhone 4 screen. All other colours look quite washed out. Anyone else got this problem?

I also have the same issue with the yellow tinted screen on a new iPhone 4S (white).

Compared it to my old 3GS, 4 and a couple other new 4S and its really annoying having the tinted screen.

Called Apple Support today and there is no "standard procedure" yet to handle these cases. He told me to hard reset the phone + factory reset it before calling them again.

Anyway, hope more people loggs an issue here so the problem is taken serious from Apple side.

Well just to update you, I've been very lucky and the 2nd (black) iphone 4S I got has a gorgeous screen with no yellow whatsoever and perfect contrast levels (same as my old iPhone 4 screen).

I know its not helpful to people who are now on their 4th iPhone 4S or whatever, or can't swap it due to being in another country now or something, but just wanted to confirm they do exist.

Lucky you!

I just had my third 4S replacement this Saturday and still as yellow as before.

Got an iPad last week and that one has the same yellow tinted screen too. Compared both new items to the display ones in store and the guys agreed my screens are a lot worse than theirs. The good thing is that they don't argue with me, accept my issues and are helpful. The only problem is that after a number of swaps they would offer a refund instead of giving you new items forever. However having sold my 4, I need a phone, but what phone? Checked Nexus, didn't like it...

By the way it's worth noting that sume guys in the store normally say: "we had only one person with the same issue" while some of them have not heard of the issue before... and then I just smile 🙂 and say "yeah you are doing you job well and doing what you have been told to do so"

Stalk much, SdeS? Actually, Apple replaced the entire top half of my MacBook because that screen was broken. This is a different issue.

The color cast issue is still variation in the backlighting. I didn't say it is "all in your head". However, if you continue to put screens side by side and compare them relatively, you're just going to drive yourself nuts. You probably can't find two with exactly the same color.

Not sure what you mean by "Stalk much"?

Why have you put "all in your head" in quotes as if that is what I said, I did not.

I realise you won't ever have two with exactly the same colour, there is however acceptable colour temperature manufacturing tolerance, and beyond that the product should be rejected. (especially if you do not allow the user any way to adjust it, ironically because you want all your products to have identical colour rendition - or as close as possible)

Apple, a company that is renowned for having the tightest physical production tolerances of just about any consumer electronics company seems to be happy to let massive variation slide by on the iPhone 4S screen colur (and contrast).

Do you have a yellow screen iPhone 4S?

Just to clarify one thing. I think the issue here is who the manufacturer of the screen is rather than internal (factory side) quality control.

Every time I got my new items they had the same quality yellowish screen, even my new iPad had the same (bad) quality screen as the 4S. I have been told by the guys in the store that they have two manufacturers for the screens (possibly LG and Samsung. There have been issues with one because of issues with LCD backlight. Which can be bad news because if that manufacturer was producing the good looking screens (non yellow) and apple got rid of them then we may have to wait forewer to have the same quality back, unless apple will re-start sourcing the screens from them.

Frankly it's quite difficult to see if apple have quality control between items coming from different manufacturers. And now if they have only one manufacturer producing the same quality yellow tinted screens then I'm not sure how they could actually recognise the problem internally. However as the internet is full of us complaining and thousands of items are returned back, hopefully they will get the message.

I want to believe apple has already sat down with the relevant people/manufacturer and instructed to start producing the proper items. It would be so stupid ignoring such issue.

Hello,

Just to share my experience.

Went on apple store friday, (the 25th, it was the sold and looot of people too ><), for an other exchange.

I got my third iphone 4s, it's still a C39 serial, but, and here there is a big BUT : this one is not yellow.

The screen is so white i can't even find yellow tint, and comparing to my friend's iphone 4, (his screen is really violet / blue) there is a difference, but mine doesn't draw yellow tint, but a clear white tint.

And compared to the iphone 4s of my other friend (the DNP one i posted spec page 19) which was clearly white compared to my other's 4s, this new iphone i just had is a bite whiter than his.

So it's possible to have a white tint and a C39 serial. I just think display are badly/randomly calibrated at factory, due to lack of orders from apple, or quality control.

Seriously, when the genius did the last exchange (for me, because it's really a waste of time to stay 2 hours at apple store each week for that), and when i saw the C39 serial on the black box, i was frightened, but finally it's ok.

I have the battery problem, as ever, but it seems to be a software problem, so it will be fixed.

Finally, i'm happy ^^

Note : All exposure models at apple store were C38 serials models (i checked 4 or 5 models ), and they were perfectly white, and they had only C39 refurbs models (told to me by the genius, when i asked to have a C38 one) And this time the genius was really friendly with me compared to the other time. Today it got even worse...

I am returning my 3rd white 32Gb 4S because of another yellow screen. Just called Apple (Netherlands) and asked them if they can garantee a yellowscreen free replacement, for example, from a different factory. Of course they can't (won't), it seems nobody has any control over any process at Apple. Weird for a company where everything is so much controlled by computers.

Anyways, after the aftersales guy asked his boss if they can do anything to reduce the chance of me getting a faulty phone again his answer was,

We are not allowed to send you a 4th replacement. If a customer returnes 3 simulair products for simulair reasons they are not allowed to offer a replacement anymore. Some other office will have to make a descision if they can make an exception...

Conclusion: after receiving three faulty products I am now punished for returning them.

What about that...

May I say to everyone, if you have a chance to swap your phone (that has a yellow tint) DON'T LEAVE THE STORE UNTIL YOU ARE SATISFIED! My process has been exhausting.. the in-store employees act clueless. I was denied a RETURN of my phone. (within my 30 day)

I'm pretty sure they denied my return cause they knew I would buy a white 4S

Is this allowed? Why is this right? We deserve answers..

Here's a new twist that I've just discovered ...

My white 4S has a blue tint ... BUT I am outside the Apple store now, on my 14th (final) return day and I am now questioning whether or not to return/exchange it.

The reason being that having been using the phone during my journey to the store, it appears that the blue tint only appears under certain lights/bulbs?? Under daylight, the whites look white (ish, obviously not pure white but more paper white) and in general colours seem accurate.

Other than the blue tint (which for some odd reason it appears that many people like a blue tint?) the phone is perfect. No dead pixels, no dust, no scratches, call quality is crystal and the battery problem is sorted now - contact me if you want to know how I sorted the battery issue as mine is rocking now!

So ... this is why I am now in two minds re returning the phone.

Have any of you lot noticed the difference between viewing under bulbs/indoors, and viewing in daylight?

Would be interested to know ...

Dude it's your eyes. Your brain auto calibrates these things, just like an auto white balance on a camera, that's why you can go indoors under incadescent light and things like paper still look white. When you move between different light sources, indoors, outdoors, flourescent, incadescent, etc., your brain will recalibrate everything based on the current liught source. The iPhone itself is bringing its own light source with it, one that doesn't adjust to fit the ambient light. If you stop stressing over slight tints and everything, your eyes will adjust to that too, and just make everything "work."

If you've finally found one with no dead pixels, and are happy with everything else, then be happy with your iPhone. You've found a winner.

Just left Apple.

Bought another 64 4S in white with slightly less of a blue tint, but had all grime in between the glass and plastic around the edges at the front of the screen. Just returned it and still have my original.

Can clearly see the difference and it is not just my eyes.

Can't be asked to get into a swapping/exchange battle over this phone as I know it can become ridiculous and tiresome. Really not completely happy with this unit though as I am very aware if the tint - being a photographer/photo editor I can clearly see it.

On my way to another Apple store now with the intention of swapping this white one for a black one to see if that makes a difference - on inspecting numerous units in numerous Apple stores I can confirm that the back iPhones have superior screens. Or I can just keep hold of this one and just "suffer" the blue tint ... not exactly the way to go on a £700 phone!

All I know is that today is my last (14th) day to have a clean, no questions asked swap so I am now feeling the heat!

What to do, what to do????

Nov 28, 2011 10:52 AM in response to Tommy London

I dunno then. If this really is a case of once you've seen it you can't "un-see" it, you might have to swap a few. A suggestion if you're going to compare black and white models, cut a mask out of a solid sheet of construction paper that will let you compare just screen to screen, without the body color coming into play. Just like using a matte on a photograph to change the appearance of the picture.

Nov 28, 2011 11:19 AM in response to DanM99

Just came out of a 3 store, put my white next to their demo white and mine is DEFINITELY AND NOTICEABLY bluer so I am definitely taking the round the corner to the Apple store to exchange.

One thing is for certain, though, and that is that I do not want black. The white one next to the black one in the 3 store just looks do much better!

Off to exchange ... wish me luck!

... and thanks for the input, it's appreciated mate.
