iPhone 4S screen tint

Got a new iPhone 4S this morning, and when I put it next to my old iPhone 4 I discovered the screen was much 'nicer' on the old iPhone. When I say nicer, its kind of got a really yellow tint to the screen on the 4S, whites are where you notice it the most for example the email looks far nicer on the iPhone 4 screen. All other colours look quite washed out. Anyone else got this problem?

I have the same problem. I went to the Apple store to see if this was normal. All the 4S display phones had a nice crisp bluish cooler tint compared to mine with a dull yellow warmer tint. I showed the Genius the comparisons. They were reluctant to swap it saying that all the 4S's in the back had that same yellow tint. After insisting that they swap it, they did, and the **** new one had the same yellow tint. Does anybody know if apple is using 2 different LCD makers to make the 4S? Perhaps this is the reason some are yellow and some are blue...

I also have this problem. If the yellow doesn’t go away in a few days, I’m returning my 4S and going back to my 4. As much as I love Siri, I can’t stand for losing quality with an “upgrade.” BTW, I’ve noticed my 4S has a noticably shorter battery life. If that’s the cost of a dual core processor, then you, sir, can hang on to that additional core.

A quote from "savior1974" on macrumors.com stating the warmer colors are intentional and BETTER.

For anyone that has two different iPhone's with different Screen colors (cooler/blueish vs warmer/yellowish)

Bring up this picture on both iPhones, and you will notice the difference in black levels (contrast ratio) between the two screens.

You will notice that the one with the warmer whites, actually shows the shadows of the pumpkin in more detail that the cooler whites version. Also if you look at the shadows eyes, they are more pronounced on the warmer than on the cooler screen. This means that the warmer colored screen is actually calibrated better.

Thoughts?

For all those people who say "it's as designed" or "it's supposed to be that way" - then please explain why my friend's white iPhone 4s has a different color (blue tint) than my black iPhone 4s (yellow tint)? I can understand if you're sayihng that it's a different intentional design between iPhone 4 and iPhone 4s, but this is a difference between two 4s's.

Perhaps this is related: Apple has changed the polarization of the glass on the front of the iPhones. I just discovered this (for myself anyhow; undoubtedly bloggers figured it out long ago). On my 3GS and 4, if wearing polarized glass-lensed Raybans or such sunglasses, you would see a mildly darkened screen when the phone was in the veritcal orientation, but a very darkened (unusably so) screen in the horizonal orientation. (Interestly, the iPads, both 1 and 2, are polarized in the opposite dirction, wokring w/ sunglasses in the horizontal mode.)

But w/ the iPhone 4S, I note something other than basic polarization at 90 degree increments. It seems to align (thus darken a bit, but actually more of a color distortion that mutes all contrasts?) in a diagonal aspect. Both horizontal and vertical are quite visiable at 90 degrees with sunglasses on (and without).

No, I'm not whining about seeing these in the sun. There are separate threads for that.

Anyhow, perhaps that polarization is what some of us are noting. Yes, I realize it isn't the case we are all complaining about the different shades of whites and contrasts when wearing sunglasses, but perhaps the new polarization (or polarization replacement) is the source of at least a subset of these effects that some of us are sesing? Just a thought.

I have the same problem with my black 4S. But as someone else mentioned on here, I used to have the same problem when I first got my iPhone 4 last year. It had the same yellow tint that my 4S has right now and it really bothered me, but after some time it cleared up and turned into the nice blueish tint. It's actually the one I've been comparing my 4S to and there's definitely a difference. I'm hoping the same thing is going to happen again this time. I'm going to give it at least 2 weeks before I consider taking it in to apple.

I just received my iPhone 4S last night and after struggling on the phone with Apple/AT&T to port my numbers correctly between my account, which they totally screwed up and now I have to get all new SIM cards BUT anyway after all that I was finally able to use the phone and I noticed right away how my new 4S has a true yellow tint as compared to my iPhone 4. My co-worker noticed this morning how the contrast is also "off" color. The colors are not very vibrant either. The yellow tint is Very harsh on my eyes as well. Apparently Apple hasn't made any statement regarding this issue but I do see that I'm not the only one to be experiencing these issues. I will be calling Apple support tonight to figure this out.

I popped into Apple today after 5 days of usage and can't stand looking at the yellow anymore 😟 They were quite happy to refund my money completely and I've gone back to using my 4 with the nice screen. Actually doesn't seem like much of a drop back down in all honesty, Siri didn't work for me half the time anyway (which was a shame), and battery life seems to be better again on the 4 and I have my enable 3G switch back again. Just going to miss that nice camera, and that little extra smoothness.

Agreed. For me, there is a noticeable yellow tint when looking at the display from a on-angle while wearing polarized sunglasses (mine are neutral density - no color tint - just polarized). The yellow tint is reduced when viewing from off angle. The fact that polarization allows viewing of the tint suggests that it's an optical property of one of the layers of the sandwich - possibly intentional to allow better viewing through polarized lenses. That's certainly an issue with some LCDs - for example, my Canon PowerShot S95's display goes black when held in portrait orientation and viewed through polarized lenses, which makes it rather hard to frame a shot. But it could also be an effect of the glue, if there's some isotropy in the material that decreases with curing time.

Screen tints will differ from batches to batches and also based on the manufacturer. When i bought Iphone 4 it had a more of blueish (normal) tint. I had to get a refurbished Iphone 4 due to some issues and it had yellowish tint. Actually yellowish tint is more natural looking and the pictures looks quiet warmer. Recently got an Iphone4s and it has the blueish (normal) tint.

I am fine with either tints. But it is definitely not an issue with the screen according to me.

also there is a bug in 4s. you can call and text anyone even when the screen is locked using siri. search for places and add stuff to your calendar with screen locked using siri.and diagnostics screen shows there are so many crash reports. i can't believe it. there are more than 30 crash reports half of them that are due to low memory in 2 days.

I have to agree with you I went into the southampton store without an appointment a misunderstanding from my earlier telephone conversation anyway I have to say they were brilliant in that store nothing was to much trouble ended up comparing quite a few phones black and white ones and they were all the same..they still offered to replace my 4s with another brand new one if I wanted to which I declined as there was no point as it looks like it is a charecteristic of this new phone I also checked my sons white 4s whos serial number is a long way from mine and his is the same.. so that set my mind at peace.

My wife and I both bought 4Ss at launch. She bought a black 32Gb and I got a white 64Gb. Her screen is fine, and was since she first turned it on. Mine is distinctly yellow.

My provider (Three UK) are happy to change it. I hope I get a better one next time.

It got me thinking, this phone has now become a powerful computer in its own right. Given that, there should really be some kind of screen calibration in the settings. It's been in PCs for ever, it's about time we had it in phones. Even a simple white point adjustment would be great.
