iMessage sent from email address rather than phone number...

I'm having similar problems with my iMessage update under iOS 5. When I send text messages to other iPhone users, it appears as iMessage and from my email address rather than my phone number. I went into Settings > Messages > Receive At, but there's no option to add my phone number. It keeps showing my Apple Account, which I registered under for iMessage and iCloud with my email address. It only allows me to add another email address. From what I can tell, non-iPhone users are still receiving my text messages from my number like regular. If I turn iMessage OFF, I'm sending regular text messages to all users. Anyone have a fix yet? I'm wondering if this was an Apple goof that won't be resolved until the next iPhone update.

Wait...I think I figured it out. When you click Receive At, click Apple ID and Sign Out. Once you've signed out, the Receive At turns to "Use your Apple ID for iMessage." I think that fixes things!

By the way, second weird glitch with my iphone in the past two weeks. I'm becoming less and less impressed with my iphone and starting to feel a little regret for switching from android. I purchased it for its supposed reliability and product support, which seems to be lacking. I keep hearing people complain that apple won't acknowledge the issues or supply a solution to them. For my less tech-savy friends and family that I recommended the iphone to who might have the same issue...well I doubt they would be able to solve these on their own. And from the sounds of it the service providers as well as apple would likely be no help. In apple's defense, I have yet to use anything that runs as smooth.

"THIS IS THE SOLUTION" ..As you stated turn imessager off then back on .... it will then ask for u to sign into your email by asking for your personal email address password.. i just dismissed it and then it readjusted the recieved at option to my mobile number.....

very annoying apple for setting that up in the first place i dunno how many messages ive sent and not got a reply simply cause the recipiant had no idea whos email address it was...

I have a new iphone 4S. My iMessage seems to work asit does come up in blue yet my messages are received from my apple id email, not my phone number. Also, when I go into message settings, iMessage is on but says "waiting for activation". After a while, it says "activation unsuccessful". My number is not even available to select under "Receive At", I only have the option of adding another email and do not have caller ID option. Can anyone help?!

if the other person is receiving an imessage that says its coming from your email address and not your contact name - the easy solution is have the other person make sure that your email address is listed in their contacts - in the same contact that has your phone number. also make sure the caller ID in your imessage is set to your phone number. this solved the issue where when I texted our daughter they would initially come up as from my email address - the above switch helped solve that. Also all of the house phones were under/using same apple ID - if this is the case then you need to make sure everyone has a different email address under the received at option in imessage - initially they all had mine - and when i used imessage they would go to our daughters email and not as a text. changing the email addresses so that they were all different on each phone - solved that second issue (which was actually the first problem that I had to solve - to get the texts to her first).

THIS WORKED FOR ME, IS THE ONLY SOLUTION. I tried other solutions that didn't worked at all, like:

-Changing my wifi's DNS to 8.8.8.8

-Setting my timezone to automatic

-Changing my timezone

-Making a new apple id

-Updating "my info" with my own contact, and making sure my number was set as "iPhone"

The only thing that worked for me was making a FRESH download of my iOS and making a full restore. I tried restoring my iPhone and it didn't worked, untill a made a new download of the iOS and configured as New iPhone. After that, make a restore from your bakcup.

iMessage and Facetime should work within a few minutes (2 or 3) and none of your data will be lost.

This worked for me on a iPhone 3GS with iOS 5.1.1

There is so much conflicting and oftentimes way out there advice on the internet.

All you need to do is go to Contacts--->find your name in the contacts----> press edit and you will see that only your email is saved into your contacts hence the receiving end getting your iMessages with only your email stamped---->type in your mobile number and save--->

your problem is now solved and your recipients will see your name and not your email, when you iMessage them

Thanks "moza16" (Page 7)! That helped in the most simplest way! Kept wondering why my carrier was sending me txt msgs saying i dont have enough airtime/credit to send a txt, when i wasnt txtn anyone at all! It made sense when you described and explained about airtime in your answer! Sometimes, things happening behind the scenes that we're unaware of can be frustrating! Thanks again! 🙂

First time post- hopefully this actually will be helpful.

Apparently, on the iPhone, you can have the option to use EITHER your phone number OR the email address associated with your Apple ID.

This is my solution to get my phone number showing:

1) On my iPhone, sign out of Apple ID. Do this by going to (Settings->Messages->Receive At).

2) Tap on your Apple ID (top of the page) if it is highlighted and you will get a number of choices including "Sign Out."

3) Tap "Sign Out." (Note you can sign back in if you eventually decide you want to use your email address for iMessage. I did read somewhere in this thread that if your iMessage recipient adds your email address to his/her contacts, then your name will show up. That could be an alternative solution.)

That did it for me. Now my iMessage shows up again with my phone number.

Hope that helps!

Now I have to figure out how to do the same thing with Messages on my Mac and iPad...

Hey Pakti,

assuming the iPhone is factory unlocked and you had sufficient Airtime/credit on it when you tried the process. Yeah?

Well you see mate, it's a standard Apple's procedure to contact your carrier when activating FaceTime/iMessage to use your phone number rather than your Apple ID/email.

Having say so, that's why the message "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate FaceTime/iMessage." pops up to get permission from you to use The Airtime/credit I'm talking about.

So unless your cousin's iPhone is locked and using Gevey it shouldn't work - cause, as you already know, it's only the factory unlocked iPhones that get to use the FaceTime and iMessage features.

Airtime/credit is the main issue when activating both the features to use your phone number rather than email.

Try again and give us feedback,

Cheers.

Its ok!

Phone came as a gift from Canada and we're based in NZ. She got her phone 'jail-broked' here in NZ! She has lots of credit aswell on her phone! One thing tho, after following your instructions, I didnt get a prompt from her carrier saying "Your carrier may charge for SMS messages used to activate FaceTime/iMessage."!

However, i keep receiving the msgs from her carrier about balance?
