Ringtones not Syncing after upgrade to iOS5

Like many other iPhone 4 users my family upgraded our software to iOS5 on Wednesday evening. After upgrading we noticed that not all of the ringtones we had purchased from the iTunes store were available on the phone after the upgrade.

So I went into iTunes and confirmed that the ringtones had been selected to sync. Synced the phone and again, some ringtones do not sync and some do.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in Advance.

Connect to itunes

Click on device

click on ringtones and un-check the box and sync

after sync is completed recheck the box and pic which ringtones you want and click sync

should be good from there.

also take a look in the sounds as it does not put them in a nice little box for you any more it adds them to all the others

Also, Ringtones under my iPhone's Ringtones in Devices are gray and won't sync to the iPhone.

Now that my ringtones are on my phone, they are not under my iPhone's Ringtones in Devices. I can only see them if I click on the Ringtones on the left sidebar of iTunes.

This is what mine looks like from the Device Ringtones:

Here is what it looks like from the Library Ringtones:

I finally found a solution.

I purchased a new ringtone from the iTunes store from my iPhone. Make sure you make the purchase from your phone while not tethered to your computer.

Then, when you go to sync (via USB or WiFi) your iPhone in iTunes again, a dialog box will appear asking if you want to enable Ringtones syncing. Click the default blue highlighted button to enable Ringtone syncing again.

Now, the Ringtone category appears at the upper middle portion of the window in iTunes. Before the ringtone purchase, it was not there.

I was then able to add some of my favorite custom ringtones as well. They all work perfectly now.

I had the same problem of losing my purchased ringtones from my iphone 4 after upgrading to iOS 5. I looked in my ringtones list on itunes, and saw that it was still there (but was no longer in my purchased list), and that it still had a checkmark.

So, I unchecked it, and synched the phone. Then I highlighted the ringtone(s) in blue, and recheck marked the ringtones and synched again. I did this 3 times before it worked.

The ringtones reappeared on my phone amongst the other ringtones. There is no longer a "Purchased" list for ringtones on the iphone after the update.

This took me FOREVER to figure out. I opened my itunes and unsynced ringtones. I unclicked every single ringtone in the iTunes ringtone list (not the one attached to the device). Then "Synced all ringtones" then synced all ringtones. Then RECHECKED every single rington in the iTunes ringtone list (again, not the one attached to the device) and then clicked sync all ringtones and vuala!!! Hope it works for you!

Edward, after much struggling, i've figured it all out. First to make the ringtones work, the advice given here works very well. Even an Apple tech person recommended this:

http://www.macrumors.com/2011/10/13/ios-5-users-can-make-custom-text-tones-too/

Then the issue with the ringtones not staying with different contacts boiled down to having had my contacts in the old IOS4 synced with another computer. i realized this when i made a new contact and the ringtone stuck with the new one--it was only the contacts in my address book that were stuck. So i just synced the contacts with the new computer, and bingo! all is well.

I hope this works for you.
