iTunes 10.5 will not install on Windows XP

I'm trying to install 10.5 iTunes on my Windows XP computer, but it keeps giving the following message:

" There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could

not be run. Contact your support personnell or package vendor."

I think it says the I should contact Apple to tell them that their installer program is no good.

But what do you think???

I installed by connecting an external hard drive, clicking on itunes free download off the apple site and sending 10.5 to the external drive (click save not run)

Then back to the pc, my computer, open the drive you've just used and open itunes that's in there.

open the installer icon and click run. 10.5 is now happy to download.

Finally, back to itunes on your pc, go to edit, preferences and then advanced and move itunes and your library to where you want it.

Then enjoy a 2 hour wait while ipod software 5 updates!

I went looking for Windows Installer Cleanup and found Microsoft FixIt instead. Used it to finally uninstall the older version of Apple Software Update that was not allowing me to install iTunes 10.5. Once this program succeeded in finally removing the older Apple Software Update, my iTunes was able to complete the installation at last. I needed to remove nothing else, just went back to my downloaded version of the new iTunes and reattempted install. Worked at last!

using MSICUU2.exe didn't help me. But, the new replacement app did:

I fixed my problem like this:

Here's the deal -

1. can you install itunes via the APPLE SOFTWARE updater?

I couldn't so I downloaded ITUNES and tried to install it that way. Hence I got the same error hang as you. Nothing worked, (Multiple attempts at uninstall reinstall, stopping of Services, Reg cleaners etc..)

2. If answer is NO to #1 you must fixe the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE Program.

OK so I couldn't find a Download for this. But: if you have WINRAR, open the ITUNES.EXE and extract the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI file. Execute the APPLESOFTWAREUPDATE.MSI separately. And you will not be able to install it and have a similar issue as per your Itunes install. This of course leads you to believe that the Itunes.exe install is also installing all of these components including the applesoftwareupdate silently. It must BOMB at that portion of the install and you are done.

3. Your goal now is to get the applesoftwareupdate installed. How do you do this. Well - here is what I did.

a. downloaded and RUN a PC Installer FIX it tool from Microsoft. This is a replacement for the older MSI fixer they used to use.

http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

b. It will list programs to attempt to fix.

choose AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi

c. Once it is done, then reinstall apple program updater using

AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi

Finally it should install since the Microsoft tool appraently fixed corrupted installation files in your registry for this application.

(Please note: that I also disabled any apple related services such as BONJOUR or IPOD DEvice RUN: services.msc to get there - although this man not be necesarry.)

Hence Launch this APPLE UPDATE SOFTWARE (Click the ICON in your Start menu) it should list ITUNES

select ITUNES from here and it will update.

KEY HERE is to ONLY UPDATE APPLE Stuff via the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE program. If that program is not working fix it. Then Bingo.

I am sorry to see folks having this problem for weeks.

APPLE, Spread the word. PC's can get corruption in the registry on your product should the update be stopped or computer shut off during an update. etc... Please improve your software updater program to check for invalid registry upon launching the app. This will prevent people thinking it is an APPLE issue. It appears to be a problem on your PC's registry settings for the APPLE Software update.

I've tried every suggestion on here. Nothing worked. I even had Apple tech support try to help, with hours spent on the phone with them, but no luck even with suggestions from their engineers. Then this week Apple sent out update 10.5.2.11 to fix some minor errors, with no mention of all the widespread installation issues. Once again it wouldn't install automatically, but the download did install with only one error. The result is that now, finally, iTunes can recognize and sync my devices on a 64 bit Windows machine! The registery error that still popped up means I cannot install Bonjour, but since everything seems to be working now, I'm not sure what I'm missing because of that, but hopefully this means Apple is paying attention to the mess many of us have experienced and are working to provide a better product.

I just got new ipod touch and iTunes is forcing an upgrade to the 10.5 version. When i try to download it, it says Thank you for downloading the software but it is not there. I am lost. I've never had a problem doing an update before. I have Windows XP. I've tried fixing the apple installer and the windows installer and still the same thing... Any other suggestions?

➕ Zacryodg 😍 - you are amazing!! I've been struggling with this for weeks and weeks, first off I-tunes itself kept telling me it couldn't update I needed to it manually, yet I couldn't find how to do it the way it explained, then today it started taking me to the web site to download an even newer version and was getting an error message all the time. Followed everything you said and Hallalueigh it worked!! Thanks - I really needed it too, as I am waiting for delivery of my i-phone 4s so needed the latest version! 😁 🙂😍➕

I tried all of the fixes I've found all over the internet and none of them worked. My error was the 'VC80.crt.....' one.

One of the fixes was to update everything which I tried but I couldn't install one update for c++ 2008 redistributable. I did a bit of digging and found that the reason for this was that the file 'trustedinstaller.exe' was missing from c:\windows\servicing. I've since found that avast has flagged this as a rootkit and I've obviously deleted it unwittingly.

I copied the file from another machine (I had to change the permissions for c:\windows\servicing to allow me to copy the file into that folder first) and pasted into c:\windows\servicing. I then reinstalled c++ 2008 redistibutable and everything updated fine. Then I installed iTunes 10.5.3 and it worked first time.

I'm not sure if the missing 'trustedinstaller' file was the cause or the fact that the updates weren't installed but I'm up and running now after weeks of headscratching.

Hope this helps!
