I think that the thing many folks commenting here are perhaps missing is that Mac OS X and iOS are rapidly merging into being one OS. Tabs is how Safari works on both the Mac and the PC. And now Safari for iOS uses the tabs as well. In the same regard the big deal about Mac OS X Lion is that a lot of things that Apple first developed for iOS have now been brought to Mac OS X.

Apple is also rapidly adopting other behind the scenes features of the iOS for Mac OS X, such as the use of the sand box for all Mac apps sold in the Mac App Store coming in just a few months time.

So folks stamping their feet and demanding that something about an app that has been changed be changed back will not likely occur.

Well, how imperial of you. What you seem to miss is that we are consumers and indeed do have preferences that dictate how we spend our money. I would not buy a Ford if they capriously decided that, to standardize production, all new cars will have the door handles on the roof. Providing both interfaces is just SMOP (a simple matter of programming).

Thanks. I understand you like it and indeed I immediately checked it out, but nothing cuts it compared to the clean UI of previous safari. I am furious and disappointed. I think I am going to cry. UI will go down the drain, this is the beginning. Mark my words.

An unhappy user.

Is it possible to install ios 3.2 on ipad 2?

Tabs on Safari 5.1 are a different matter. Firstly, they are not there until a tab is created, secondly the UI is balanced and pleasing. Here something is wrong with the UI and the most elegant solution for a tablet I can imagine was actually the previous implementation.

The thing is some people probably just want those tabs, that's why Apple went that way. Just like some people saw "multitasking" on their android friends' devices and we now we must manually kill apps from the background because apple was forced to make those feature-comparers happy.

Oh well. I still hope they can improve this over time.

Apparently, you don't actually understand multi-tasking in iOS. It's different than in the Android OS. Very few apps are actually running in the background. All those apps that show when you double tap the home button are recently used apps, not running apps. There's rarely any need to "kill" one. You'll know if an app is running in the background if it's doing something like playing music or actviely using GPS.

I've been trying to understand the usefulness of the tabs for a few weeks now and don't find them that bad. They're still ugly though, and the UI doesn't come close to how polished it looked before or how polished safari with or without tabs looks in Lion.

  • Let users select an option to hide the tab bar if only one tab is present, please.
  • Allow for users to see an expose version of opened tabs (this functionality disappeared).
  • Make the tab bar thinner. In fact the new Safari leaves much smaller area to display the page content.
