Caller ID not working on iPhone 4S

Just got an iPhone 4S today. Also switched from AT&T to Verizon. For some reason, I am only getting caller ID on contacts that have the country code added to their numbers. I turned off International Assist, and it didn't do anything. When I add the country code to the number in the Address Book, the caller ID works just fine.

Is there any way to fix this? Or is there any way to add all the country codes at once instead of doing it manually to 400+ phone numbers?

IMPORTANT NOTE: This may help some who report the *228 fix reported by epetti and StrokerAce12 not working. I had to do it twice to get complete fix.

I had the Caller ID problem crop up again after Reseting Network Settings. Almost all phone numbers no longer matched to address book contacts. *228 - Option 1 - Kill Phone and Message apps. After first attempt I had only a few contacts now matching numbers in Message and Phone apps. So I tried the whole process again. *228 - Option 1 - Kill Phone and Message apps.

After the second programming, all numbers were now associated. Very strange behavior since OTA programming should be the same each time its applied. Hope this is helpful.

My phone has this issue. I'm an AT&T customer who came to VZW with the 4s. Initially they tried to transfer my contacts for me, but something went wrong...so I just synced my phone with my backup on iTunes when I got home.

Now when I call certain numbers, which appear to only be numbers with my same area code, the calls fail because I guess I'm dialing internationally.

None of the fixes in this post have helped, except I haven't tried to resync to iTunes (macbook is at home.)

*228 didn't help. Tried that 3 times. Killing phone/msg apps didn't help. Changing language didn't help. Powering off didnt help.

I had a friend send me a text to test out if it worked. His message popped up with his name, which was a good sign. When I went into the msg app to read the text, it shows his phone # instead of his name. ????????

I tried to add him as an existing contact, and he was already in there. So it added the same # as an "iPhone".

I am having the same issue, although I came directly to Verizon (4S). I had an iPhone 4 with ATT a year ago, but went to Android for about a year. Anyway, I tried *228 and *22899 with minimal success (some numbers switched, but some did not). I tried a few different langauages and had more success than with the *228 options, but I am still left with a number of contacts that are only showing as numbers in messaging and phone. The contacts are all set up the same as contacts that are working. I doubt anyone has anything new to add, but thought I would check. Also, assuming this gets fixed at some point, is there anyway to combine message threads? I now have 3-4 threads from the same number (as part of this error) and I really would like to keep them in order (long story, but I have to save texts from a few people). Any assistance in either area would be greatly appreciated.

I tried *228 after having the SAME problem. going to the apple store twice and having to get a replacement phone. (probably a refurbshed which ***** since i had my brand new phone for only 2 months!!!)

their exact words were "sorry, don't know what to tell you. not sure what the problem is, definitely a software issue but we cannot fix it. we will give you a replacement phone OR you can go into your contacts and edit them one by one." r u f***ing kidding me? so i got a replacement phone but i couldn't wait o for it to be activated so i just left the apple store with a refurbished phone believing their words that the new phone will be fine.

boy was i worng. same problem. i got really fed up and my husband found a forum here and it said to go to GENERAL>>SETTINGS>>INTERNATIONAL and change the laguage to something other than english. then switch back. i switched to spanish and voila! it was formatting right!!! so i switched back to english hoping for the best and IT WORKED!!! =)

i should have done this with my BRAND NEW iphone before going into the store and getting a refurbished phone which didn't solve the problem... but now the phone works so no complaints here...

Just upgraded from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4S on Verizon. Had the same problem: Caller ID would only show the number (always with a 1 in front of the number), but the texts would associate a name with the number. If I changed the number to a 1+ number, the phone would recognize the caller, but text would not. Ultimately, I did an iTunes backup and a complete restore. Now it works fine.

Thank you auaaumma!! I have a factory unlocked version of the iPhone 4S on T-Mobile in the U.S. and Claro in Central America. The contact names, both in phone and messages, were not showing up (only the phone number was listed). I have been searching for a solution the last few days and nothing worked; until I tried auaaumma's solution above. It works perfect!

Thanks again 🙂!!!

Mine was the same way. The problem is a technical anwser but the easiest fix on all 4S phones are to go into settings, go to international, go to language, the hit a different language like French. It will take a moment then go back to settings again, go to international, go to language and hit English. That's it. It should reboot itself and all back to normal.
