iPhone 4S camera not working ("Shutter" remains closed in app)

Hi,

I fired up the Camera app on the 4S and the "shutter" will not open (either for stills or videos). I tried rebooting the phone and it's still not working -- I've let it sit for about 15 minutes. Note that the FRONT camera DOES work just fine-- it's just the rear that's not functioning 😟. Has anyone else seen this problem?

Thanks,

Update in my case.

My one was refused to repair by Japanese "Apple authorised" repairer based on its serial number.

According to them, there are several types of parts combination and mine is recorded as one which is not supported on this islands. I am suspecting rather than being such an electronics concern but being commercial issue, anyway mine is not supported.

Recently, mine shows inside camera normally without problem. Right after restarting the camera application last time by whether means of restarting entire machine or double clicking the home button, it was showing shutter (or perfectly closed iris) and flicker with blue band repeatedly. But after some days, it start working normally.

My suspect of potential issue is as follows.

1) Calibration logic is too strict against something on the camera module.

This incures a software counter measure to ease the boundary number.

2) DMA hardware issue on the particular A5 chip instance (production torrelance).

This incures necessity of issue of an errata by the semi-con manufacturer and software counter measure.

My one's awdd_$date... is always being sent to Apple and they can see it. Expecting earlier release of iOS 5.1.

Add me to the list too, my phone has had the same problem for 1,5 week now.

Tried everything that has been suggested here. Sometimes but very rarely the front camera works with facetime after shutting the apps and the phone and restarting but that's only for a few secons.

Having the phone since 28th December and have been adviced by T-Mobile helpdesk to visit their shop. I have an replacement service and insurance but they only offer me to repair the phone which is absolutely onacceptable. I want a new one!! So on Monday I also have to drive 45km to and fro on my day off to get the service I am entitled to.

I am a great Apple fan, which first the iPhone 3GS now the iPhone 4S, iPad and iMac and I thought I was the only one have this problem. I am printing out these posts and taking them with me.

1. iPhone 4s

2. 32GB

3. T-Mobile (the Netherlands)

4. No front or back camera, not with any other apps like Camera+.

I tried this without any luck. I have had a couple of tries with support without any luck.

I was able to get the camera working by going into plane mode, shutting the phone off and back on but that no longer works. I'm going to call support again but I can guess they are going to tell me to wipe the phone again. I really don't think they know what the problem is.

Hello, to all of You that are expiriencing a problem with cammera. (Foggy picture/Bad quality)

I've done a small "research". Yesterday i bought an iPhone 4s 32gb Black. It works perfectly, everything like a charm. But there was a small catch, at evening i was trying out camera. All pictures that we're taken we're somehow foggy/blury. So i went here, read this article. Tried this and that, nothing WORKED! I was about to call Apple service tommorow!

BUT THEN I HAD AN THOUGHT: " HEY I DO HAVE A PLASTIC COVER OVER LENSE AND LIGHT "

I removed it and guess what. Pictures are normal. After that i put the plastic cover over the back of the iphone case. And when i took picture again, they we're foggy!

So my personall opinion, remove that cover if you want good pictures. I know, i also wanna have protected back camera/light from scratches... but this is not the way im gonna shoot pictures at night i guess!

Guys try it, and tell me does this change something for You! Cause for me it does. Thanks for your patience.

My 4s worked perfectly for 5 weeks, took several pics and videos. The suddenly the shutter wouldn't open, as others are describing. Just left the Verizon store, the agent said it's regarded as a mechanical flaw, covered by the warranty. A new one is supposed to arrive tomorrow, with instructions to transfer all data, activate new phone and return old one in the same box.

Uodate: Verizon send me a "recertified" iPhone 4s ... which ***** big long green ones. I called Apple and they will replace the phone with a new one, but to get it right away, I will need to go to an Apple Store ... nearest one is 95 miles for me. If I shipped my phone to Apple, they would send me the new one, but I would be without a phone for 3 to 5 days. I'll make the trip tomorrow. Love their network coverage, but VERIZON ***** at customer ... a reconditioned phone for one that failed after 5 weeks from purchase? Geez.
