Siri- "Sorry, I am having trouble connecting to the network".

When using siri I get the error message, "Sorry, I am having trouble connecting to the network". I have spoken to a few others who receivec the 4s today who are getting the same error message. Does anyone have a fix for this?

Some have reported "fixes" only to discover the problem returns. And the "fixes" are varied... and with mixed results for each method. For me, the only thing that has been consistently observable as to cause-effect for Siri not finding the network is when I'm at work (under a firewall) and I turn on Wi-Fi on my phone, Siri will not work. As soon as I turn off Wi-Fi on the phone and leave only the 3G signal as my connection to the world, then Siri works. I can repeat this every time, every day. (BTW, Siri always works fine on my home Wi-Fi!)

But, I'll bet that many with the problem are not in the same circumstances. Siri's network connecting problem is still, as of today, a mystery that Apple hasn't acknowledged publically.

Siri stopped working for me yesterday after working fine since I got my 4S launch day. It's still down today. I've tried restarting, resetting turning Siri off and on and nothing helps. Siri just keeps saying the network is down whether I use wifi or 3G and dictation doesn't do anything.

I can see by using the NetStat app that the phone is connecting to the Siri servers, but it keeps saying the network is down anyway. So it's not a network setting on the phone, something is hosed up server side. I can't see it being a server overload as it's working for most people and I was trying at 4 AM in the morning (NJ) when load should be minimum.

Has Siri worked for anyone since yesterday?

Let's be honest, Siri is useless. Not only can it not work without a connection (which is terrible considering you might just want to make a note or set a timer) but it's not even fully implemented in most countries. I've had nothing but issues with mine.

What's the point?

I'm happy I bought the 4S as I had a 3GS before and wanted the better resolution and faster CPU, but anyone who upgraded from a 4 is a bit of an idiot and anyone that upgraded due to Siri needs their head read!

I upgraded from 4 just for SIRI and I am somewhat disappointed. Although it is good for the replying to emails and texts and setting up appointments, it is sometimes trying to set up appointments and understanding you. It is a good start but needs work. Let's face it, if it is not easy to be used and it is frustrating, one will not used the feature. It is borderline on that for me.

I actually wonder if it's a 4S connectivity problem. I have found that (particualrly on wireless) that I could not get an internet connection. I thought it was my router playing up, but sebsequently discovered that both my wife's iPad and HTC Desire were connecting fine.

This could be more interesting than just Siri being a gimmick.

Problem with that is first that you must know Siri is down and second that you must change the settings on your phone. Both represent a problem when driving. The phone should change over to regular voice command automatically if Siri can't connect. Having to manipulate your phone in any fashion while driving is dangerous. If Apple forces us to do that because of inadequecies in its system it should be watchfully waiting for the law suits that will probably occur.

Umm...you should NOT be using your iPhone manually in any way while driving (at least in California). That includes pushing the home button to bring up Siri OR (if she's disabled) the old Voice Command. All cell phone use should be totally "hands free"...and the last time I checked you need to use a hand/digit to press the home button to bring either of those two control methods up. Apple does NOT "force us" to use anything. Believe it or not there was a time in the not to distant past when using any kind of communication device while in a travelling vehicle would have been impossible. We all managed to get along and survive without the ability to tweet, check stock, text or update our facebook pages while in a car for a few minutes or hours. So, I think Apple has probably covered themselves with all kinds of disclaimers and warnings about driving safety and using cell phones so I'm pretty sure they won't have to answer to any lawyers on this one. And, even if they do face a class action lawsuit down the road, they've got the money to pay for more lawyers than the other guys do! 😉

As for me, I'm loving Siri. Sure she's quirky at times, but what friend isn't????

Well, at least for me, I can activate Siri and voice dial via my Garmin Nuvi all through voice commands to the Nuvi. When Siri is working I don't have to touch my phone at all.

And I am not talking about texting, tweeting, etc. I am a physician and at times absolutely need to answer a phone call while in my car.

As far as Apple "covering" themselves, I'm sure they have. However, the question still arises that they are selling a cell phone with the claim of bluetooth connectivity. When Siri "goes down" the bluetooth connectivity is useless for voice dialing. It shouldn't be impossible to design the OS to automatically switch to the older voice command when Siri stops functioning. At the very least Apple should inform the end user that if he/she is using Siri the ability to control the phone via bluetooth may be lost.

I guess for the time being the thing to do is turn Siri off and use only the older system.

And I remember the "good old days" when I would have to try and find a pay phone if my pager went off ;-(

So by even though Apple has made it the SOLE feature highlighted in their TV ad, sticking BETA in front of it gives them the right to not explain themselves for having a half-assed product that doesn't work at ALL for many users?!?!

Schiller said it was beta because more language and services support were coming, not because of these connection issue things. So far, I've seen no response from Apple. One more day of this with no response and I'm returning this piece of crap.

Yeah, I love seeing the TV ad for Siri while numerous people around the country are finding that it only works intermittently!

I love the 4S anyway. I switched over from a Palm Pre on Sprint to the iPhone on ATT and, other than the Siri fiasco, I am quite happy with the phone.

I'm disappointed that Apple is not making any public comments on the problem and am surprised that, considering the hype around the 4S, the news media is not commenting on this.

Sort of sounds like Apple's initial response to the antenna issue on the 4 -- i.e, no response at all at first. If it is a server capacity problem then I would imagine that most users would accept that and live with the problem until Apple fixes it. I'm sure that most people feel as I do that we should be given some information about this. Even if the answer is "we don't know but we're working on it". Silence is not a good option.

So far I've found that pulling up the MyInfo under the Siri Settings works to get her working again.

When a product puts BETA on it I know what that means. It means it can still have a heck of a lot of issues & my use is subject to risks. Siri is kind of cool so I'll put up with the quirks. Turn Siri off if it interfers with functionality you rely on - plan and simple. Apple doesn't have to immediately "address" the issue on a BETA product. Expecting they should will leave you disappointed.

⚠ Try closing all of the apps (or one at a time) to see which one is interfering with the Siri connection. For me it was the old Siri app.

Sorry, I said that's what worked for me hoping that it would work for you. I posted that in a few places and my wording here did make it seem like that is the one solution. It is clear that there are multiple scenarios that causes Siri to choke.

Oct 24, 2011 9:28 AM in response to mikerudolph22

I don't think it's a "server" issue at all. My wife and daughter have 4s's. My wife's hasn't had a single problem and has worked flawlessly. My daughter's worked before we synced her music and apps, then it hasn't worked since. We even erased it and started over with nothing loaded and it hasn't worked at all. I think it's a bug that something loaded as part of the sync is interfering with Siri, but it can vary from user to user.

Apple needs to tell us something.
