iTunes to iPhone "Unknown error 0xE800007F"

I have Wi-Fi Sync active and it works great unplugged from power -- but when I plug my phone into power and it starts syncing, iTunes says the following:

"iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred (0xE800007F)."

Searching gives me zilch. Anyone have an ideas? Everything is running the latest verison of iOS, etc., etc...

Wasn't I pretty positive I read in the manual or somewhere that iTunes absolutely did have to remain open to do this? Who can really tell, they went from having like 3 background "helper" applications running at all times to what seems now to be like 6 or 7. I just keep the sang program open 24/7 cause I also use Home Sharing to stream my content over Wi-Fi since my music collection alone would destroy a 10-pack or more of iPhones. I can't even fit my "heavy rotation" albums on here. Gotta rely on both this and my 64GB touch to go anywhere outside my network.

BTW, am I just overlooking this, or is it ironic that Apple doesn't have a mobile version of these support forums for their millions of iPhone/iPod Touch users to navigate easier with?

I also can't find them in Tapatalk, which would be a nice bonus.

If there is a mobile version could someone point me to it please? Thanks.

The following simple solution worked for me; ymmv. I'll try it on my daughter's phone when we both get home again this evening to see whether it resolves things for her, as well.

Both of us are running 3 GSes, and iOS is up to date; the phones sync to a 2009 24" iMac running Snow Leopard, and it is up to date. Wifi is through a dlink Air Plus G router, which is as up to date as a (5? 6? 7?) year old router is likely ever to get.

With the iPhone plugged into the computer and iTunes off, I restarted the phone; i.e., press the Sleep/Wake button on the top until the slider appears to shut it off. Shut it off, and then turn it back on again. When it came on, iTunes started and it synced. I went to the Settings app on the phone and hit 'Sync Now' to check it, and it synced--whereas, before the restart, it wouldn't

Again, your mileage may vary, but I've found that most iPhone problems can be fixed by turning the phone off and on...and the rest can be fixed by resetting it (holding the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

FYI this thread is not about being unable to sync the phone.

My understanding--and, please do correct me if I am incorrect--is that this thread is about getting the repetitive error message "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone because an unknown error occurred ( 0x" etc. In the course of the explorations I've read in this thread, at least some of the folks report also being unable to sync with the Sync Now button and/or having this error, but still having the syncing work.

My 'solution' resolved BOTH problems for me. Again, it may or may not for others. My phone had synced around 2:00 this morning, so it was syncing, regardless of the report of this error...but, after reading this thread, I found that it did not sync when I pressed that button under General in the Settings app. Since restarting in the way mentioned in my post, I haven't had further incidence of the error message.

I'm sorry if that point wasn't clear.

Well, my daughter got home before I left--I knew she was home, because the iTunes icon started bouncing in the dock and, sure enough, the error message had popped up. I turned the phone off, plugged it in with iTunes closed (note: it probably doesn't make any difference at all that I had iTunes closed), and turned the phone on. When it started up, it started up iTunes, it synced and, so far, at least, no more error messages.

I'd be interested to know if this worked for anyone else.

BTW: one of the reasons Apple techs tell you to turn the phone off and on again--and specify the steps to turning the phone off--is that there are 'not a few' people who think that 'off' and 'sleep' are the same thing. It's like checking the cord when something doesn't power up; "What do you think I am, an idiot?" should only be asked of the tech after you check the cord...again. I wouldn't have thought to look at the 'Sync Now' button to see whether pressing it did anything, because I normally would never press it; since some of you did so, however, it became a part of the troubleshooting process...and, generally speaking, when a 'button' in software doesn't work, a restart of the OS is a good idea.

Getting the phone to sync when connected with the cable is not my problem. The problem is the popup error that occurs after I unplug cable and keep iTunes open. Device sometimes disappears and then comes back. Syncing wirelessly sometimes works but not always.

Please don't post your restart "fix" again since this error will not be fixed by any combination of step such as uninstalling or restarting blah blaah blah. A software patch/update is needed if Apple even knows about this issue.

@Grabauski and @tom43876 - unfortunately the 'reboot it' solution is short-lived for those that have reported back. I'm not aware of anyone who has reported back that they've not experienced the problem reoccuring after a few days.

For anyone scan-reading this (now very long) thread...

REBOOT only works for a little while.

And for Apple....

PLEASE GET THIS FIXED !!!!

@mf219 - at the top right of this page (when logged in) you should see "Stop email notifications" in the "Actions" box. Hope that helps.

I have been following this thread for some time now as I have had this error since updating my iOS devices(2 iPhones and 1 iPad ver1) to iOS5. After trying many things here and elsewhere I found on the internet, I think I have solved my issue. First, let me say thatI had the 0xE800007F error along with some mDNS (Bonjour errors in theWindows event log). In the end, I had 2 issues:

1. For the Bonjour Windows event log errors I had to allow Private and Domain access through my firewall to the following:

a. iTunes

b. Bonjour

c. SyncServer (I had to manually enter this as it was not listed in thefirewall)

2. For the 0xE800007F error I had to enable my router to allow multicast streams. I have a Linksys E3000 router running Tomato firmware and this is blocked by default. I also believe the stock Linksys firmware and many other router firmware blocks multicast by default as well.

After doing the above, I rebooted the router, the computer running iTunes and all iOS devices and all seems well. I no longer have any Windows event errors and WiFi sync is working flawlessly.

I will update this post if something changes in the future, but I hope that this will be the fix and I also hope it will help others on this board with the issue.
