Phone numbers not formatting properly

I just got a new iPhone 4S. The numbers in my address book don't seem to be formatting properly. They just have a string of numbers, e.g.., 6025551212, rather than the normal format of area code in parentheses and a hyphen in the number.

This goes beyond aesthetics. The phone doesn't match numbers, so my recent calls list and my SMS history don't have names associated, even though almost all of the numbers are in my address book.

Here is some more information: I just got the iPhone 4S today, and I plugged it into my Mac and chose to do a restore from backup. I selected today's backup of my old iPhone 3GS. Everything else went smoothly. (note that the number didn't transfer... this is a totally new phone number on a totally new account.)

Even more information that might help in troubleshooting this: when I go into Settings --> Phone, it shows my number formatted in the way I described above (e.g., 4805551212). But here's the weird thing -- I can't edit that! There is no rightward-facing arrow that indicates you can click on it, and repeated clicks don't do anything. On my iPhone 3GS (which formats its number correctly), I can go in there and edit it.

I should also mention that this is a U.S. phone with a U.S. number on a U.S. carrier (Verizon), and most of the numbers in the address book are U.S. numbers. So there aren't any strange international issues going on. I have searched through the settings and U.S. is selected for all of the international settings I can find.

Finally, this is a phone issued by my company, and the IT person opened the box, "provisioned it," added it to the corporate account, got a new number assigned to it, etc... Does that have anything to do with it?

Thanks for the help! I'm pulling my hair out!

Hi All,

FYI, I posted earlier and said that the *228 strategy worked perfectly for me. And it did.

However, just less than a month later I noticed that all my contacts reverted back to the "1 XXXXXXXXXXXX" format.

This time I skipped every step except for calling *228 and pressing "2" for "Reprogramming." I didn't kill the apps in the multitasking/recently used bar, etc.

Anyway, it worked again! So, I'm once again back in business.

Not in love with the fact that something seems to be going on to cause the fix to not stick (at least for me). Makes me think something else is going on with the iPhone 4S or Verizon.

So, thanks AGAIN to phonenician47. :-)

Arrrgggghhhh!

I have just had to go through the *228, then hit "1" for reprogramming, procedure on my Verizon iPhone 4S for the THIRD time in a month and a half to change the contacts from the unreadable 1 XXXXXXXXXX format to 1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX. My Settings in the International category are correctly set to United States. Also, the contacts in my MacBook Pro Address Book have been in the correct form of 1 (XXX) XXX-XXXX all along.

Has anyone else found success with the *228 reprogramming method only to have your contacts revert back to an unacceptable format again?

Anyone have an explanation for the inability of the contacts to remain in proper form?

I am having the same problem and will try the *228 solution.

As far as why this is happening I was wondering (for me at least) if it has to do with the fact that I live on the Mexican border and I know my phone signal bounces off several cell towers in Mexico (it is not uncommon for my phone to switch back and forth between Mexico service and US service depending on where I am at the time, though it happens much less with Verizon than it ever did with AT&T).

When I go into my address book and try to edit a phone number, it defaults to what I am pretty sure is the Mexican phone number format (xx) xxx xx xx. But since that is a total of 9 digits and most of my contacts contain 10-digit numbers, it seems to revert to the jumbled xxxxxxxxxx format.

So I'm wondering if Verizon has somehow assigned me as a Mexico phone rather than a US phone. (All the international settings on the phone itself are tagged to the US.)

The problem just started for me today, and I have had the phone since October. I synced the phone wirelessly overnight, as I always do, and updated a few apps. I also rebooted the phone this morning because of an unrelated issue with another app.

I just went through this same problem on a iPhone 4S on Sprint. It happened after inserting a UK SIM card.

The solution was very simple - I don't remember where I saw it but it was somewhere on these message boards.

To fix the phone number format/dialing issues, just go to General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

Enter your unlock pin if you have screen lock, follow the directions and the phone will reboot.

Note that you will have to re-enter any WiFi passwords you had before as this resets phone and wifi network settings. As far as I can tell, that's the only downside.

HTH - Chris.
