Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else?

Got the new 32GB iPhone 4S today from AT&T, activated the phone was working all morning, I started experimenting with Siri and a couple minutes later the phone was hotter than usual and I get Sim Card failure, and Bad SIM messages. The phone now only says No Sim. I get home take out the SIM card and put it in my previous iPhone 4 and it works just fine. I then put in a blank micro SIM into the new iPhone 4S, but it still says NO SIM. Thinking the SIM reader got fried some how already.

Anyone else have this problem maybe a bad batch out there, or I just got an unlucky lemon?

I made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow, but I seriously doubt they will have replacement stock of the 4S already. Guess I will find out what my next course of action will be tomorrow trying to get a replacement since new orders are taking 30 days to ship I am afraid I will have to wait awhile to enjoy the new features of my already paid for phone 😟

My 64gb iphone 4s has said no sim for a day now and it's only 1 week old. Is there a beta version that I can download on my mac? I tried the link mention 6 pages back and it downloaded a .exe file which I cannot use and after control+clicking check for updates I selected the file and received an error saying it was not compatible. Any ideas?

Had the same problem with iPhone 4s Verizon. Spoke with Verizon and found out sim card was never activated. Also the sim card that was installed was a global sim card, needing a global plan to be activated. The fix included 3 options; 1. Add global plan to account, found one with no cost, and the activate the sim card. 2. Reboot iPhone so you have service, then remove sim completely. 3. Go to Verizon store and get a new sim, one that is not global and have them activate it. Hope this helps :)

Hello guys.I had the same problem untill yesterday when, thanks to you guys,i found out about the update to 5.1 beta.i tried that and now i am experiencing no problem, from about 24 hours. No sim card failure,i can send messages at ease, the signal bars are not fluctuating anymore.Previously,i tried anything ,from changing my sim card to multiple restores.I even discussed the problem with both Apple and Orange here,in Romania, but, differently from your countries, here nobody seemed to know about this problem and that is so weird! Thanks to you guys,i never panicked, realised that is only a software problem and that is going to get fixed, somehow. Now i have a functionaly iphone 4s and i'm very happy.Thank you for sharing.

I did the Restore method to ensure that the firmware 9A406 running. Prior to that it was on 9A405. Its 18 hours and counting now that I haven't had to power-cycle my 4S every 30-60 mins just to get carrier network working again. No invalid sim or sim failure errors so far and surprisingly battery is at 50%. Prior to doing this, i have to re-charge the phone every 6 hours.

4S GSM/3G factory-unlocked from Korea being used in Indonesia currently.

For the past week, every time I switch on my iPhone 4S, I get a SIM CARD FAILURE message and it never finds, but continues, to look for a service from ORANGE. Is this an issue for ORANGE or APPLE? I can't phone ORANGE to ask them because the phone doesn't work with the SIM FAILURE.

I notice other people here are suffering too. But there doesn't appear to be any word from APPLE about fixing it.

Do I deduct 7 days of payment from my service plan owing to the phone not working?

Jan 22, 2012 1:48 PM in response to ESVV

ssmakh and ESVV, Have you tried installing iOS 5.1 beta 3? I may be wrong, but I think EVERYONE (or almost everyone) in this forum who has had the SIM FAILURE problem and installed this "update" has found success. The installation instructions and links to the download site have been given in several earlier posts. Good luck. Mr. Luigi

It appears this is a known issue that Apple has not addressed.

I have the same problem with a new 64GB 4S that tech support tried to fix but now has asked I bring into a store for a swap out. But the time involved (including activation with my corporate server, download 35GB in iTunes, and the 4 calls today for support is going to take abotu 20 hours of my time.

It's been 4 days and I miss my Blackberry. Never had issues at this level. And the Blackberry was 20% the cost of the iPhone. It may do more, but my time is worth something as well.

Here are the links to a Nov 2011 article by Zdnet on this being an ongoing issue:

and to a temp fix with double-sided tape, no less!!!

Thanks Amazon! I hope posters who are still expressing frustration regarding their non-functioning iPhone 4S's are reading your updates. Whereas there may be some who will not find success by installing iOS 5.1 Beta 3, my somewhat quick scanning of this forum does not reveal a single person who has installed the update and not found relief from their SIM PROBLEMS.

Just saying.

Have a good day and, again, thanks for continuing your commitment to this discussion forum.

36 hours after updating to IOS 5.01 (9A406) still running properly and battery lasted whole day. Did a few tests by going to areas where 3G signal is weak and walking back to area where signal is good. Phone switched from 3G-EDGE-3G properly under 20 secs.

Looks like phone is finally normal.

Just additional information:

Phone came with IOS 5.01 (9A405) factory unlocked, Korea version. I got both a 32g White and 64g Black. Black is still unopened as it is a gift for someone, will be doing the battery charging on the Black in a few days and will use the same sim card in the Whitey.

Will report back if Black encounters the same issue and if the 5.01 (9A406) fixes it if it encounters the same problem. I'm hoping it does because that narrows it down to software errors instead of hardware error within a reasonable doubt.
