iPhone 4s Battery Life?

My iPhone 4s battery seems terrible! Almost equivalent to my 3GS and it's terrible battery life. When I got my iPhone yesterday and restored from backup I noticed nothing really changed with minimal usage and standby! Is this normal or should I consider setting it up as a new phone because maybe something is running in the background that's causing it to drop a percentage every few minutes under light usage? Input would be great!

Ok...maybe it was fixed, maybe not, maybe it will help people here understand the issue and maybe...not

A little story before i'll say what the "solution" to the problem was-

I bought my Iphone 50 days ago,in a private shop (not my cellular provider shop) and went later to them get mini-SIM

When I got it,they did not say anything about changing my internet connection (I had 100 mb limit for my old Nokia 6120c)

So when I got the SIM I surfed the net for like 10 minutes...then I got a SMS warning from them that im surfing outside my internet limit...

I was charged for 90 dollars and they explained to me that the wireless network the iphone use is differenet than the net of old phones (read-not smartphones)

Since they refused to give me back the money and apoligize for this,I decided to leave them for another company

Because of this, I turned off Celullar Data until I change my Cellular company and can surf freely

Ever since I turned off Cellular Data my battery drain is crazy - i'm also unable to send or receive sms and phone calls when I restart my Iphone until I turn on Cellular Data for a split second

Now,I got my SIM from the another company and turned on Cellular Data - been with this SIM for 2 hours with Cellular Data on,then I switched back to the SIM of the first company (since they did not update my phone number yet)

My phone was fully charged at 12 AM - I woke up at 7:30 - 93%

This is about 1% for an hour in standby- before it was 3%

Of course 99% of the people that complain about low battery have Cellular Data on so this "solution" won't help for them but I still think it's interesting

Maybe I had something that checks for active internet connection all the time so my usage was equal to standby time

Also my "private access point" option was not found before

Well if you do the math his phone is almost at max spec. Will it be the same in a year, probably not. I think Apple states 80% after 400 cycles is what to expect.

Do you mean up to 80% after 400 cycles? Right? Please, note the up to?

Also one should note that these numbers are from Apple so they are super optimistic and one should take them with a ton of salt!

Rember the spec is up to xxx for each feature.

So, this means that in a year from now his iPhone 4S will last in exactly the same conditions up to 24h (i.e. 80% from 30 h) according to your estimations/post. Will Xenocea be happy with this? I know that I would not be!

This is incredible bad engineering (i.e. it would not last even one full day [i.e. 24 hours] after one year of use) for such and super expensive phone like iPhone 4S!!!! One should realise that if iPhone 4s battery life lasts less than 24 hours then it means that if one forgets to charge the iPhone 4s on one evening then next morning the iPhone 4s will be dead and the alarm clock of the iPhone 4s will not even ring to wake up the person! All it is needed is to forget to charge it one night!

One does not have pay a premium price for a phone in order to get such a miserable battery life! There are cheaper iPhones (e.g. iPhone 4) which have much better battery life!

Shortly, the iPhone 4S battery life is miserable and it will be even more miserable after a year of use! I guess that after two years one could could use the iPhone 4S as a fix iPod!

User uploaded fileHey Ok my second post on this topic!! I have done everything listed, almost everything is turned off except for Cellular data, which I need on as I need to access my emails etc on a regular basis.

I have went back to apple, in which case they referred me to my service provider to have the phone replaced or fixed (how it works in South Africa).
My service provider has told me that they must send the phone away for four weeks back to apple in the US, for them to check out the phone (even after i demanded a new phone). I cant afford to be away from my iphone for so long as I sold my Iphone 4 (which I should never have but didnt expect myself to be unhappy with my new 4s).

Anyways with everything off, the new build etc etc etc, here are my results im getting (one thing I also noticed is when my phone is near my ipod docking station/radio, there is freuquently that sound where you are connection to something. Event with all my apps closed all the time.

A bit of a lame illiterate world when you have to watch youtube videos instead of reading 2 lines of text i.e. "reset the phone to turn off Siri raise to speak if you've turned it off and it stays on" and "settings/restrictions/turn off ping". Worst is that the guy in the second videos concludes by saying "I haven't tested this myself, but I've read it helps". So lame. Plus this is all old news, though it may help some. This is no "battery fix".

Hope these guys got an ereader for Xmas to improve on their reading skills...

Mind you the 4 is not considerably cheaper. The critical mistake Apple did was introducing a phone (the 4S) that builds up on the 4 reputation (picking up where amazing left off or whatever tag line) but that delivers less performance in terms of battery life. The 4S is actually a step back from the 4 - chip fantasies are highly irrelevant, especially to the Apple user base... I mean it's not like they introduced LTE (thank god). Some pages ago I've read someone saying that actually the difference wasn't all that important in terms of standby times (200 vs. 300) insofar as it was 1day+ if I remember correctly and that it was advertised as such. Unfortunately, people buy more into the PR than reading the specs per se - and that's expected with the level of marketing Apple does. And as you put it, those "100hrs" more are required to go through the night. Without that extra juice, the device cannot be positively differentiated from an Android device in that respect. Then the psychological superiority of the Apple users is entirely undone - and that hurts. Steve himself had classified Android as basically the same OS as iOS. So what's different? Well, what's different is that you should "think different" lollll.

I have the initial iPhone 4 and it has battery life that is just as horrible (since the update). The hardware is fine, the software update was crap! I can't believe that it has been out since mid-November with still no fix in sight. How big of an issue can this be to fix. Furthermore, why hasn't apple released any information regarding their progress? Any news I've heard about this is that "it only seems to be affecting a small population of users." Seems there's at least a few million ****** off people so I'd hardly call that a "few."

I have reported this to Apple but thought I should post it here too.

I have picked up a problem with cellular data (iOS 5.0.1 9A405).

Sometimes when I turn cellular data off it respects my wishes and turns off the 3G radio, this saves huge amounts of battery BUT sometimes when I turn of cellular data it tells me it is off but it is NOT and I can confirm this by moving away from my wifi spot where it will give me a message "Network settings lost". Other times when it HAS turned off cellular data properly I can move away from my wifi zone and the "Network settings lost" message does not pop up. As far as I can tell this is what was draining my battery so rapidly, for the last 3 days my battery life has been great and I have changed nothing else on the phone.

What I do now is if I see my battery draining quickly I turn cellular data on, then I turn it back off and then I restart the phone and then the setting seems to stick. This does not happen all the time, for the most part it respects my wishes when I tell it to turn cellular data off. Maybe some of you might find an improvement of sorts by testing if this is the case with your phone too.

I have gone 29 hours on one charge so far and I have 38% battery left, enough to get me through the rest of the evening which will take me close to 34 hours on one charge. Until I realised this problem I was barely getting 7 hours on one charge.

I have NOT changed anything else I do on the phone or how frequently I do it. My mail still checks every 15 minutes, I send whatsapp and text messages as much as I like and I dont have to stress when receiving a call that my battery may run out. A 10 minute phone call barely uses 1%-2% of my battery.

I'm still watching very closely at the battery life and hope to never see the drain start again. I have a regular habit of making sure WIFI ON & CELL DATA OFF when I am at home and WIFI OFF & CELL DATA ON when I leave home and so far so good.

I hope iOS 5.1 addresses this for good.

Well, I understand your plight. I just don't know how you come up with such numbers of "at least million". I wouldn't know really. What I know is that I'll never be one of them. My point was more that 50 million of them or whatever i.e 100% of the user base has less standby time than with the iPhone 4. You comment is a reminder that their software was able to even affect non 4S users, which is really a shame. Lessons can be drawn from this from the user standpoint:

1-Never install an OS update on your device before checking how it affects the device performance on the forums

2-Gather information about "per app" performance for your installed apps in the forums or application developers' forum in relation to a new OS update - if there are issues, choose, either don't install the update or remove the app before migrating

3-Never buy a product without reading the specs (and entirely ignore the marketing junk) and figuring if those specs suit you in relation to your needs

4-Demand a full downgrade path from your beloved company and better documentation of what constitutes best practices - in particular, are there any steps that should be taken after applying an update to unleash its full potential.

Usually, Apple users don't have to resort to thinking on their own like this. You might get some heat from your friends for questioning the mainstream faith...

Personally, I don't know what to make up from what you describe. You may simply have something that is sanitized through the reset, or as you describe, you may have an issue with your cellular data setting. But one thing is for sure. You cannot turn off the 3G radio on that device - ever. Cellular data is just that, cellular data for apps, and the 3G radio is entirely functional for calls and sms. Even if they reimplement the 3G toggle like they seem to be doing in 5.1b3, it is unsure as to what level you can ever deactivate the radio itself and what benefits your will reap from that. Only time will tell...
