Without 10.7.2 you will not be able to use iCloud. You will need to find a third party solution. Google has a calendar and addressbook that may work.

It took me about ten minuites to set up iCloud sync on my iMac, Macbook Air (both using 10.6.8) and new iPhone 4S. The details are onr the web and the key points seem to be that you first activate iCloud through your iPhone and after that you can set up a caldav server in iCal using your apple id as user name and password and the server address as: 'p06-caldav-icloud.com'. I had to do this twice on the Macbook Air but it took only one try on the iMac. You know you've succeeded when the new iClound calendars Home, Reminders and Work appear in your iCal. The Reminders calendar syncs with the Reminders app in the iPhone 4S

I think Apple has made it possible to use iCloud in 10.6.8 but just hasn't told us. One caveat I would add is that I've only used it for iCal. Not for mail, documents, photos and suchlike. Maybe there is just limited functionality. Whether there will actually be a 10.6.9 update is an interesting question. My money is on 'no'

I am new to the forum and have joined because I have a mobile me to icloud query. I could do with some help. I am a photographer who uses macs. I have two macs that would be suitable to upgrade to Lion (they are 10.5.8) at the moment, but I have to keep them at that OS because otherwise my two scanners and my printer wouldn't work and I do not want to have to buy new as they are very good and do what I want them to do. I have been told that the cheapest and quickest way for me to get myself onto icloud is to purchase a netbook refurb. I can see that I could then transfer to icloud via the ipad but would my 'mail' on my 10.5.8. still be able to receive my .mac emails, or would I have to view and reply to my emails on the netbook. Also can I purchase any ipad refurb or does it have to be a particular one. I may be a photographer but computer technology beats me sometimes! With that in mind I would be very grateful if someone could please reply in 'words with one syllable'. Thank you very much, in advance.

As I understand it, of June 30, only Lion users will be able to fully use iCloud. If you choose to use the hardware you have now, step one is to upgrade to Snow Leopard. Step two is upgrade to Lion. Interestingly, Apple is now giving away Snow Leopard to boost iCloud migration:

The link provided by "charliem2019" does NOT provide a way to sync your Address Book and iCal in OS 10.6.8. The instructions on the website provided presumes you are using OS 10.7 (Lion). If you are using OS 10.6.8, which is the topic of this discussion, and you open your preferences to your Address Book in 10.6.8, it shows "MobileMe" not "iCloud" as a sync option under "Accounts". MobileMe does NOT allow syncing with Address Book or iCal. You can only sync your Address Book and Calender to iCloud if you are using Lion (10.7).

One option... You can sync your calendar under 10.6.8 IF you use Busycal instead of iCal.

Sorry about the old link that dosen't work. Just follow these steps. (I used them to set up iCal when I used Snow Leopard)

  • Select Preferences from the iCal Menu.
  • Go to the Accounts tab.
  • Click the + sign to add a new account.
  • Select the CalDAV option under the Account type.
  • Enter your User name which is the full email adress you used to set up your iCloud account (Not the @me.com one)
  • Enter your iCloud Password.
  • For server adress enter caldav.icloud.com

This is how it should look:

Hope it works,

So, Charlie, have you actually done this yourself with iCal? It sounds like you have done it and have got your calendar syncing with iClous. Accurate?

Have you also done it somehow with Address Book? It is my understanding from talking with Apple Tech reps that Address Book does not have the capability to create a link to a caldav icloud account.

And you can sync contacts as well as calendars if you use Soho Organizer.
