A iOS 4 Safari feature has gone in iOS5

Hi, my missus is livid, using Safari she is complaining that the little box (HAS GONE) that had a number in it, on the bar to the left of the web address box, when clicked it showed you a small picture of all the web sites which had been recently visited, i dont know the correct name, but it isnt there anymore and seems to have been replaced by a bookmark bar underneath the web address box showing recent sites visited in TEXT.

She doesnt like it and of course it IS all my fault, because she didnt want her precious iPad updating to iOS5.

I dont suppose there is a way of getting Safari BACK the way it was before ?.

Arrrgggghhhhh! Just updated to iOS5 today and I HATE the tabs - hate them on the desktop and hate them even more on the iPad. I lived on the tiled screen and had everything beautifully organised and site updates could easily be seen at a glance. Feedback will be sent - in the meantime I will be looking for a way to go back to ios4.

Why must features be dropped? Surely they realise people have been using this screen for years.

I agree. One of the things that I really liked about the previous incarnation of Safari was the open tiles. I could easily see recently visited pages and select one I wanted, or open a new page. The tabs are confusing - for example they are labelled "forum". Which forum? I visit several, on different subjects, and the only way I can see which one is to select that tab - and it is usually the wrong one!

I totally agree with the frustration over this change and Timmy, I sympathize, because it sounds like you were describing my wife's reaction after having her iPad "upgraded" to ios5. The scrolling pages feature on Safari was one of her favorites and she figured I had screwed something up while using her iPad when it suddenly disappeared.

While I can understand (although, obviously, not agree with) the need of developers to change certain features, such as adding this far clunkier, less elegant, more Mircosoftesque set of tabs to the bookmarks bar, I cannot, for the life of me, fathom while Apple would offer consumers fewer choices during what is supposed to be an upgrade. Why take away a feature that is, at least in this household, beloved? Why not give iPad users the choice for themselves?

Along those lines, I find UKenGB's "misunderstanding" response dripping of the same kind of "we know better than you what's good" arrogance that seems to have filtered down from the developers on this one. Don't tell me what's "a better way to do the same thing," because what's better for you isn't better for us. The viewing of simultaneous open pages in Safari has changed, and it's not for the better, not in my opinion.

Well you can be as rude as you like about my opinions, but what has Tabs in a browser got to do with Microsoft. That's just obfuscating the issue and irrelevent here.

Fact is that the old way of doing it was clunkier in that it took longer, with more taps of the screen to switch from one loaded page to another. Also, tabs is THE standard way of doing this in OSX. So for these reasons (i.e. it's more convenient, quicker and the standard modus operandi), the current implementation is the BETTER way of doing it.

Anyone may personnally have some preverted reason why they like the old method, but that doesn't in any way, shape or form, mean it is better. In fact it rather smacks of just refusing to accept change, even when that change represents an improvement if only you'd stop bleating on about how terrible it now is.

In any case, don't berate Apple for being in some way 'so arrogant' in making the change. They saw it as a better way to do it and so they implemented it. That's what developers do, they have to. Some users will like the change, some won't and as the developer, you just have to live with that. You CANNOT please all of the people all of the time.

Me, I just think people should stop wasting time moaning and wringing their hands in despair over this, what is after all, a very minor and trivial change. Get used to it. It is NOT going to be changing back. Move on with your life and just enjoy using these fantastic toys we now all get to play with.

Yeah i quite agree buddy it is a ****** nuisance STILL !!!

but what makes it even more stooopid, on the iPhone 4S (and i suppose the 4 as well), the little icon with the number of the last visited sites, is still there in Safari and they are supposed to have the same Operating System

As previously noted, iCab Mobile has the feature you want and will restore domestic harmony in Toad Hall.

Thank you for asking this! I couldn't figure out what happend to my "tiles." After the update, I searched google many times using whatever I could think of as a google question, but never found the answer. I am new to Apple, got my ipad Christmas of 2010, and loved it. Then got my Macbook pro Sept. 2011 and noticed the "tiled" area. Every time I searched for an answer as to how to get that view back on the ipad, I didn't really know what to call it. I would periodically try to find an answer, and today was one of those days. I found them referred to "topsites" on my mac recently during one of those searches and today I just typed in "my ipad used to have "Topsites" and Voila, your thread showed up! Yay! At least I have the answer, not the one i had hoped for, but at least an answer. I definitely miss the that view on my ipad! Although I am used to "Tabs" from my PC days, I really liked the tile look. I guess I like the visual as someone said on one of the comments. I am glad I can at least have my topsites on my Macbook, as I just found out how to make that my home page on Safari! So again, thx for the question, and I hope your wife can be still happy with the ipad. It really is a wonderful thing!

PS let me know if you find an App which is like that view!
