"Use iCloud" Pages/Numbers option won't stay turned on

I have a strange problem with iCloud synching and the iWorks apps (Pages, Numbers) on my iPhone 4. The problem is this: if I turn on "Use iCloud" on the app settings, then go into Pages or Numbers, I don't see the documents that I have stored in iCloud. Similarly, the documents in my iCloud don't sync to the iPhone. If I go back into Settings->Pages or Settings->Numbers, the "Use iCloud" option has switched from "on" to "off". I can do this any number of times with the same result. To summarize:

1. Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data is turned "on".

2. Go to Settings -> Pages.

3. Turn "Use iCloud" to "on".

4. Go to Pages. Observe that no sync to iCloud has taken place.

5. Go back to Settings -> Pages

6. Observe that "Use iCloud" has reverted to "off".

It works fine on my iPad with the same Apple ID so I'm pretty sure it's not my account. I've tried resetting the phone and restoring from an iCloud backup but that hasn't helped. I'm definitely running the latest version of Pages and Numbers (and the version numbers are the same as those on the iPad which works). Settings -> iCloud -> Documents & Data is turned on as well.

Has anyone seen similar behavior? Any idea how to fix it?

Solved! It turned out I had my iCloud account on my device twice: once for mail and once for everything else. I don't recall setting it up that way so I think that the iCloud wizard may have done it. In any case, I deleted the mail-only setup and turned mail on on the other "complete" setup. After that, the Pages/Number iCloud setting "stuck".

I deleted every item iCloud syncs between devices, all emails, every contact, all calandars, all bookmarks, all notes, all reminders, all documents in the iWork apps, reset my Photostream, and unlinked all my devices from Find my Mac/iPhone.

I did this manually inside the relevent apps and/or the iCoud website. Deleting the account on your iPhone doesn't (and shouldn't be expected to) delete the content stored on the iCloud servers. I obviously made sure all the important items were coppied locally on my Mac beforehand. Mail, iCal, Addressbook etc. have export functions.

But as I mentioned before, I believe it was a single corrupted note item that was the issue, so purging everything might not have been necessary. If the issue arrises again I will detete items in stages starting with the least important, and after each delete attempt to create a new document in Pages. It's is clear after a few seconds whether the issue persists since the gears will keep spinning rather than a blank document opening ready for editing.

From there I'd force-quit Pages, then delete more items and repeat.

If you merge a mobile me account please be sure to just use the email only. For some reason it creates it as an iCloud account that can synch docs, etc. but if u were to go to the account on your device, you wouldn't see docs as a choice to be selected. At the end of the day, it's a conflict between having more than one iCloud account established serving the same functions. At least docs is a function that can only be hosted by one account at a time. I deleted my merged mobile me account and all my docs were automatically downloaded back to numbers and the cloud. I added the mobile me, now iCloud account, again and selected mail only and everything was back to normal.

Well, i LITERALLY just enabled documents/data at Settings>iCloud>Documents and Data.

O noticed that i forgot to do that before enable iCloud under Setting>Numbers... dumb me...

So, what i did on my iPhone was:

0 - Close Numbers

1 - Enable documents and data on cloud at Settings>iCloud>Documents

2 - Enable Numbers to use iCloud at Setting>Numbers

3 - Open Numbers

No reboot, or deleting.

Hope this helps other inattentive like me!

Hi Ben, I know this is an old discussion, but we are seeing this issue with several students on their iPads at our school, and searching on discussions brought up several similar threads but this is the only one I could find that is happily solved.

I'm not sure what you mean by "I deleted the mail-only setup and turned mail on on the other "complete" setup." Can you recall the steps you did to change this? Thanks

For anyone having this issue with iCloud Drive and iOS 8.1, go to Settings > iCloud > iCloud Drive and turn off iCloud Drive.

Make sure to wait for the spinner to disappear. You may leave the Settings app but do not force quit it. My iPad took 12 mins.

The first time I force quit Settings after 4 minutes and iCloud Drive was off but the issue was not resolved. Then turn iCloud Drive back on, which only took me a second.

It then took about 5 minutes for Numbers to load anything, but I could tell by hitting the + button and going to iCloud that it was adding documents from other apps first.

I Have the same issue with numbers. I have removed both iCloud accounts that I have , one of which was not used for much of anything. logged in again, but turning on iCloud Drive is never showing up as an option under settings>iCloud . What am I missing. I turn on use iCloud in settings>numbers. But when o go to the app and try to add a spreadsheet it will show iCloud as an option for a second then dissapears.

I Feel like I have tried everything!
