ipad won't restore, unknown error (1)

I tried to update my ipad yesterday (10/14/2011). I had previsouly updated my iphone the day before with no problems.

It said it would take an hour, so I left the computer and when I came back the ipad had a black screen with the itunes logo in the middle with a usb icon. I looked in itunes and this is what it said:

"The ipad could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (1)."

I clicked on the more information tab and was taken to a website with some troubleshooting. I did what they suggested and still no luck?

Can anyone help me? Can I just reset everything? The ipad won't go past the error screen...Its driving me nuts?!?!!?

All I was trying to do was update, and now I have this huge mess.

Thanks for any help!

there is something blocking the connection between the computer and the servers that it is trying to connect to.

If you have a solid internet connection and can browse to websites fine it's either an anti-virus program or a firewall on the computer OR a firewall in the router's settings that you use to connect to the internet.

Reconfigure any security software to allow Apple's servers to pass.

Useful information for configuring your security software:

IMPORTANT: iTunes must be allowed to contact Apple using the following ports and servers:

▪ port 80

▪ port 443

▪ phobos.apple.com, deimos3.apple.com, albert.apple.com, gs.apple.com, itunes.apple.com, ax.itunes.apple.com, ax.init.itunes.apple.com, ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

iTunes uses well known ports and these ports may need to be opened for iTunes: 80, 443, 3689, 5297, 5298, 5353, 8000-8999, and 42000-42999.

iTunes also contacts VeriSign servers during an iPhone restore and activation:

▪ evintl-ocsp.verisign.com

▪ evsecure-ocsp.verisign.com

Temporarily disable or uninstall your security software

If the current available version of your security software is incompatible with iTunes, you can disable the security software and test if it is the source of the issue. It might also be necessary to temporarily uninstall security software after making sure you can reinstall it and note any required licenses. A temporary deinstallation might be required because parts of some security software remain active in the background though they appear to be deactivated.

To reduce any security risks that security software is designed to prevent, consider making sure all files needed to reinstall it are available and disconnect network connections before uninstalling security software. Should this not be possible, such as if a download without active security software is required, that required step should be the only process completed without security software. For assistance in checking your configuration, disabling, or uninstalling your security software, please contact the manufacturer.

Once disabled or uninstalled, perform only the steps required to verify your issue has been resolved. Complete whatever update, restore, syncing, back up, activation, or other task you were troubleshooting. Once that task is complete, install and configure compatible security software to ensure your PC is protected.

If it isn't a program or software on the computer contact your Internet Service Provider and/or Router Company for help to configure or disable the firewall in the router settings.

To isolate the issue to this you can also try disconnecting the router and plugging your computer directly in to the modem.

That very good detailed information, thank you. None of it worked however. I have to ask though, since you apparently are quite familiar with the system, why, out of all of the update releases that I've succcessfully installed over the years is the install of iOS5 so sensitive to connectivity issues?

I've also tried the tip in the next post about creating a new user account, which didn't work either. It's becoming comical...

Thought I was the only one who could "brick" his iPad 1 by upgrading to IOS 5.

I tried to restore it several times with the same circular problem of returning to the "this ipad needs to be restored" page. I took it to the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store. The genius could not restore it, tried DFU and it still would not work. He told me I obviously had a hardware problem, but since the iPad was out of warranty, Apple couldn't help. But because I was such a good customer (had just bought my wife an iPad 2 and MacBook Pro), Apple would sell me a refurbished iPad 1 for $319.00. I queried him as to the odds of my iPad 1 "breaking" at the same time a new IOS was being installed. His response was, "it happens".

I took the iPad to a local iPhone expert and they were able to reinstall IOS 4.3.5 (don't know how), but said each time they tried to upgrade to IOS 5, the iPad bricked. So now I am at IOS 4.3.5 but with the constant urging to upgrade to IOS 5 when I connect to iTunes.

Should I take the iPad back to the Apple Store, explain the history and ask them to upgrade it and suggest if they brick it they own it??? I really would like IOS 5 to go along with Lion on my desktop and I am really angry with Apple for blowing me off.

Wow - I can't believe how many people are having the same issue with no resolution. I was the lucky one I guess. Did you all speak to an Apple Care Supervisor? There MUST be a common denominator - mine was an iPad1 16G, wi-fi & 3g and I purchased it about 1 1/2 years ago. I find it hard to believe it is a hardware error if 28CSQ was able to get the ipad restored by a local iPhone expert but still not able to upgrade to iOS5. This, in my mind, is definitely a problem Apple needs to look into. Maybe searching this board for all the people having problems and showing it to them will help? The responses everyone is getting is so unlike Apple, I just can't understand it. Good luck.

Yea, unbelievable. My post too was deleted just for saying that I was able to fix the problem myself after being told by Apple that they couldn't help me. This is pathetic, Apple couldn't help me, but I'm censored for stating that I was able to help myself. I'm getting ever so closer to jumping ship, and I've been an Apple supporter for a lot of years...

Looks like I was censored too for linking the solution someone gave. I was quick enough to grab it before apple censored it lol.

There is NOTHING wrong with our Ipads. Don't buy a new one, there is a solution that apple won't tell us but there is one. It's useless to go to the store or call them. I spent about 2.5 hours with them and the answer was that my ipad firmware was broken and they would sell me a new one half price.

Mine got it's iOS 5 installed with all my apps and stuff just the way it was thanks to a user here.

In summary, if you have a first generation iPad 3G, for which the 3G was disabled during the upgrade to IOS5 and you received an Unknow error (1) and the restore log states:

2011-10-20 10:38:16.000 iTunes[1335:18657]: amai: AMAuthInstallBasebandHandleUpdaterStatus: commandAccepted: NO

2011-10-20 10:38:16.000 iTunes[1335:18657]: amai: AMAuthInstallBasebandHandleUpdaterStatus: outputDict is NULL

2011-10-20 10:38:16.000 iTunes[1335:18657]: <Restore Device 0x7fd74a55cce0>: Restore failed (result = 1)

2011-10-20 10:38:16.000 iTunes[1335:1a20b]: iTunes: Restore error 1

There is a solution to the problem. Your iPad does not have a 'hardware' failure. You do not need to buy a new iPad.

Unfortunatley for the end users (us), Apple's refusal to admit that a third party solution to a problem might be worth consideration only reinforces the "us vs. them" perception that they've worked so hard for.

Actions speak much louder than words. Our devices are not broken, but how many of us have had to purchase a new one anyway?

Cutting edge technology is one thing. Apple could very well be the "knights in shining armor" if only they cared enough to do so...

Mods: Think about not deleting these posts, but perhaps forwarding them to an Apple exec.

This is not our problem, you've just made it our problem...
