ipad won't restore, unknown error (1)

I tried to update my ipad yesterday (10/14/2011). I had previsouly updated my iphone the day before with no problems.

It said it would take an hour, so I left the computer and when I came back the ipad had a black screen with the itunes logo in the middle with a usb icon. I looked in itunes and this is what it said:

"The ipad could not be restored. An unknown error has occured (1)."

I clicked on the more information tab and was taken to a website with some troubleshooting. I did what they suggested and still no luck?

Can anyone help me? Can I just reset everything? The ipad won't go past the error screen...Its driving me nuts?!?!!?

All I was trying to do was update, and now I have this huge mess.

Thanks for any help!

I too tried to update to IOS 5 tonight but now can't get my ipad off of the screen that says to connect to itunes. However, whenever I connect it a pop up comes up and says my ipad is in recovery mode and cannot connect to itunes until I can get it out of 'recovery mode' but of course I have no clue how to do that. I have been on hold for Apple Care for 26 minutes so far.

I got the error each of the 2 dozen time I tried restoring my iPad last night & in the wee hours this am. I discovered that it is still covered under Apple Care, but I gave it one last shot today after REMOVING the sim card & right now it's syncing. So I don't have to hassle with Apple about replacing it. Interesting to note, that I had turned off 3G before updating to ios 5.

Just like the rest of you, had the same issues. Error(1). Went to Cult of Mac website and searched the error code and ipad. Downloaded the jailbreak program (redsn0w 0.9.9b7!) and my ipad is now fixed!!! It's very easy to install and my ipad has had no side effects from the jailbreak!! Good Luck, it only took me 3 hours to read all the complaints and search the web until I found the helpful advice from "smpdwag" on this discussion page. Thank you!!!!

Thanks a lot to longviewmac! I tried restoring dozens of times, with no effect. Your suggestion worked. Just goes to show that there was no hardware error, iOS5 just bricked some iPads and Apple should have assisted us, instead of ignoring the problem. Luckily the users stepped in, to do Apple's job. BTW, the iPad wasn't jailbroken - my iOS devices will certainly be, from now on. That's what saved the day.

After reading all your very helpfull replys, i did not talk to Apple Support any longer (always did it 1h with no result) and did not go to the Apple Store, wich was the next Option offered by the Apple Support. I fixed the Problem with the Workaround you find at Cult of Mac. I can not post the full solution here, because as I read in the Postings before, Apple deletes any reply, that gives the solution to the Problem.

I met the same problem. Before upgrading to ios5, I disabled the 3G. I had two iPad 1s with 3G. The other one works because 3G is enabled when upgrading. The sucess log is

It is a bug for APPLE! It is not hardware failure! Hopefully Apple developers and managers can see that.

I am trying the approaches you mentioned here. God bless my iPad1.
