iOS 5 Bluetooth ford problem

I have a 2011 (UK 11 reg) Ford Mondeo with built in Sony radio with sat nav, Bluetooth and CD. It has been linking fine to my iPhone 4 via Bluetooth both for phone calls and audio as needed running iOS 4. However since upgrading to iOS 5 it won't keeps saying it can't establish data connection, audio breaks up then the phone disconnects intermittently, and the radio no longer displays my phone signal strength which I relied up to know I had a signal.

This is a major pain as I need it to be reliable as it was until recently for work support phone calls. Can anyone please advise how to resolve this? Please don't say take it to my Ford dealer, 1) they will likely have no clue 2) why the **** should I when it's Apple's upgrade which has caused the problem - it was fine before I installed iOS 5.

Okay this has gone horribly wrong... I had to walk away from the car due to a work phone call, when I came back it said the update had failed. Now I when I press the CD/AUX button it has completed wiped out my ability to use bluetooth or connect via USB/iPOD - all I get in the display now is "AUX" - it has completely killed it, much worse than when I started which was kind of working (when it felt like it) beforehand. I have no idea what to do about this except have to now visit the Ford dealer and probably pay for it as I've messed it up myself. Any guidance how to get out of this nightmare situation would be much appreciated!!

Mine worked first time (Ford Focus Titanium 10Plate with Ford/ Blaupunkt stereo nav system) although i still have no song info but this didnt come up before so if it doesnt now it is no loss...

My pen was formatted NTFS (I know it said FAT 32 in the vid) i copied the files from the Download folder called ford_audio_update.zip to the root of the USB Pen and ensured I safely removed the pen before attempting to update my car (FYI: the folder contains 21 items with the .bvc files and .vbf files being approximately 7Mb in size and 7 readme files in varying languages)

I'm on a Win7 box which may very well be different to mac in terms of how pens format etc

The instructions do say that if the upgrade fails that your should try again from step 2. Hope this helps.

However it also says upgrade should take around 20 minutes. Mine (2011 Kuga) took 31 minutes and then I was instructed to re bond my device with the code provided, which I did and following some intense trials it seems to have been succesful although I dont get trackm info etc displayed

@ianfromsittingboune

I'd try the update again. It does say if it fails then restart the procedure - did you leave the key in the ignition?

If that fails, Ford should sort it out. It's not your fault - the update is Ford's update on their equipment. I had a similar experience with a sony bluray player when I ran a firmware update it completely killed it. I wrote a letter to them and within a week they agreed to replace with a new model.

Well after much panic I managed to get the radio to reset factory settings, which then allowed it to pick up on the USB drive being present - which before it didn't want to read at all following the update failure - and re-run the update. After about 20 agonising minutes sitting in the car watching an update message, it finally completed successfully!

I now have the following: my radio is pretty much back in the same working condition it was prior to iOS5 messing it up. I now have my signal strength indicator back (which I rely on), audio and phone seem fine although I will have to test more fully on my drive to work tomorrow. Still no track info via bluetooth so no improvement, just back to how it was. (You'd think this would be do-able, it's got a colour display you'd think it could manage album art let alone track info.)

Oh well, here's to the next update, and another round of being ignored by Apple! Well done and thanks to all the good folks who've helped and contributed so far.

I have Ford FIesta 2009 model. The software from ford to update the Bluetooth audio went successful!!
I just followed the pdf http://www.ford-mobile-connectivity.com/files/software_updates/en/ford_audio_ins tructions.pdf

carefully. Couple of point here.
** This Fiesta 2009 model, the usb port is near the hand brake and cigar socket.
** Make sure not to turn engine on while updating the bluetooth software. (need to turn the ignition on)

This is the process I followed
******************************************************************************** **
1. Download the software from ford provided link.
2. Extract zip file into the top level of the USB device. When you extract the zip file, all the files are in one folder named "ford_audio_update" but I took all the files out of the folder and put them in the top level of the USB device.
3. Turn the bluetooth function off on my mobile.
4. Went to car.

5. Turn the radio on (Don't turn ignition or engine)

6. While radio is on, Insert USB device in which I put the software from ford.

7. Turn iginition on (Don't turn engine) and made sure I don't press brake pedal.
8. I saw the car audio monitor says "updating...." but still the radio was on.
9. Waited for about 20 mins and saw there is no "updating" message displayed in the car audio monitor.

10. Turn the radio off once and disconnect USB.
11. Turn on engines.
12. Pair my iPhone again since it seems like all has reset automatically by this software update so there was no past record of Bluetooth devices.

13. DONE!!!!!!!!!!!! Now I can listen to the music in the car again.

Hope this helps:-) Please make sure this process is on the ford fiesta 2009 model so other model might be quite different however I believe if you carefully follow that PDF http://www.ford-mobile-connectivity.com/files/software_updates/en/ford_audio_ins tructions.pdf

You should be fine.

Dear Shamu35,

a big THANK YOU, your advice really improved my life while driving my car!!!

And also THANK YOU Ford for sending out a Bluetooth software update so quickly!!!

My update process was a little bit strange in the sense that radio did not turn off while upgrading and no "successfull upgrade" meesage popped out but just that saying "Update in progress please wait" disappeared after 20mins. Now everything seems to be fine: all phone funcionalities are back, listening music is fine and now I have also track names + shuffle & repeat options and no more error messages displayed.

GREAT JOB!!! 🙂

And SHAME ON YOU my dear Apple!! You have never given us any sign of life/advice on this thread which is, worth to be remembered, on your own website!!! I submitted you a feedback form just to receive a generic "We cannot provide you with an individual answer", I went to an Apple store where polite guys had no idea about what I was talking about and I also talked to Express Lane guys who again was very polite but almost without any clue about this issue.

Piece of advice for the future, dear Apple: please stop testing new functionalities at customers' expenses and try to be more humble not always blaming other manufacturers for the problems YOU create.

Cheers,

R.

Gerry no mate, the keys have to be turned but not fully, ie engine should not be turning. Just follow the instructions in that pdf to the letter and you'll be good!

I would like to report that I did the update via USB stick this morning and have been testing the bluetooth phone ability throughout the day. I made and received 24 calls in total , and I am very happy to report that they all worked perfectly!

This made me happy like a little boy during Christmas 🙂 I was very disapointed when my 2009 Ford Mondeo Sony unit started playing up big time after I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5. I am on the road most of the day and really need to be able to make / receive calls while Im driving. I also absolutely loved the great Ford Sony system since the call quality and volume was the best that I have found in many different cars.

I struggled for about a week and then my radio unit locked solid, even when you turn off the engine and lock the car the radio unit would still stay on , locked in its own world thinking it is still busy on a call with an unknown number... This was bad because this would go all throughout the night and I am sure this could deplete the battery. (Although it didnt even with the GPS being on charge the whole night at the same time as well!)

Ended up having to have the fuse pulled out (apparently disconnecting battery wouldve been ok as well)

When I saw the post from Shamu35 (my hero!) I was a bit sceptical that it could be such an easy fix after all the struggles with Apple and the Ford Dealership. But it worked and for all of you with the problem and the massas that will still go through the same motions, just do the USB update!

It begs an interesting question still : Who's fault is it ? Apple launches new OS and suddenly the Ford system doesnt work anymore - so its Apples fault. BUT then Ford has a "fix" which you have to download and install on your system and then it works fine again - so that means Ford had to fix / upgrade their system... hhmmm difficult one.

Nevertheless I do believe communication from both companies was shocking. Apple should have responded to all their loyal followers when they realised they have a problem. At the same time it would not have been difficult for Ford to issue a memo to all its branches to inform the people about the issue and point them in the right direction. From what I have red from other peoples experiences with Ford dealerships was the same as mine - they were clueless and in my case the guy told me if Ford releases an update it would not be covered under my warranty and I would have to pay the $300 !?!?! to do the upgrade. I almost told him he can go shove it deep where the sun dont shine, but then thank fully Shamu posted that link and life returned back to normal.

Take care people! I love both my iPhone and my Ford again!
