GPS Not Working in iOS5

Ever since i updated to iOS 5, navigation apps like Sygic and Nagignon are reporting that they are unable to get GPS signal. These apps were working just fine before the update.

Even other apps like Foursquare and Gowalla are completely off ... the only thing that seems to be working is Maps but its not able to identify current location correctly.

Its rather frustrating to see paid apps especially Sygic not working ...

Also the wifi has to be on for the GPS CHIP TO get your location.

Incorrect. Wifi is not required for the iPhone's GPS. If available, it can/will be used but it's not required. I use the Maps app daily without wifi. For some nav apps, a data connection is required to download the maps but it's not required for GPS.

I tried the GPS function today while driving my car. I installed the GPSINFO app to see if and when i get any coordinates. I turned WIFI, DATA and 3G off, to see what would happen.

When turned all 3 off, i get no coordinates at all in GPSINFO

When turned WIFI on, i do get coordinates, but only once, so it is not refreshed at all, i also do'n see any speed measures.

When turned WIFI + DATA on, i do get coordinates and it refreshes every 30 seconds, still no speed measures.

When turned WIFI, DATA + 3G on, it's the same as only WIFI and DATA, still nog speed measures.

It looks like the GPS chip isn't broke, because i do get coordinates. The accuracy just isn't ok, as well as the refreshment of the data every 30 seconds, this should be every second i think. Also before upgrading to iOS5 everything worked great. So my conclusion would be that there is some sort of bug in iOS5 that makes the GPS on a 3GS very crappy and not workable.

That's why Navigation Apps won't find a proper GPS signal, because it is to crappy....what do you guys think??

I use the Navigon gps app and on my 4S phone I first noticed that the speed read out was erratic and quite inaccurate compared to my car's speedometer. That has settled down a bit but I've also noticed that my position is not being picked up as quickly as before, there seems to be a significant lag before my correct position is displayed. I have communicated with the Navigon people and they are aware of the issues and are preparing an update to deal with it. I would assume TomTom and all the others are doing the same. You might try contacting their customer support to get more info on this. I contacted Navigon through their Twitter page. This is just something we'll have to wait out. It shouldn't be too long.

Agree, but you have to agree that in that case the standard MAPS APP would already be compatible with iOS5...would't it?? If GPS was working in that APP, than the discussion was a lot easier....in that case the problem wasn't within iOS5, but in the Navigation Apps...unfortunately it doens't seem that way, and that's the part which is bothering me 😉

I think there's a problem in the gps function itself with iOS 5. I've noticed that some of my apps that I have set to on for location services sometimes don't release the location function even when I quit the app. By that I mean the arrow indicator at the top of the screen by the battery icon stays on even when I quit the app that was using my location. It doesn't happen every time but often enough that I think it's a bug. I assume this may be contributing to the battery drain issue that many are seeing. That's going to be an Apple issue that should be addressed by an update. Apparently from what I've read Apple is getting ready to release the first iOS 5 update to deal with battery issues, perhaps this will be something that gets corrected as well.

No you are not wrong that would be the logically correct assumption. And I dont see any GPS bug fixes in the upcoming 5.0.1. I think Navigon (and other vendors) are pinning there hopes that they can fix this issue when in fact they cannot. I think we should ALL fill out the iphone feedback form so that Apple know it is an issue affecting as many people as possible. It's they only way they invesitgate and fix it.

Thanks for correcting me. The Iphone 3GS has a AGPS, Which is a assisted GPS. Which works with Help of Cellular, Wifi and GPS. Paul what do you think these apps are not working?

Sorry, I just saw this. I don't know why they aren't working. If it were me, I would restore my iPhone as new, i.e. without my backup and see how it runs with nothing on it... don't sync or add anything. See how the Maps app works then.

If still a problem and under warranty, I'd take it in to Apple. If not under warranty, I'd try the restore again.

There were reports a few years ago where users put their iPhones in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer for a few hours. Take it out, let it sit until it's warmed up and then try. Some had success with that. Good luck.

Maps on my 3GS was rendered useless after I updated to iOS 5; useless because it updates at long intervals and sometimes, the 'dot' just skips around, if it moves at all. There is also no pulsing blue ring. Over the weekend, I stayed in an area without 3G service ('E'. GPRS) and shut down my phone. I restarted to find Maps/GPS working normally/perfectly all the way back. When I synced back home, Maps stopped working again.

Since then, I can get it to work normally by (1) turning off 3G (2) shutting down and restarting the phone and only then, (3) turning on Location Services. It works even if you then turn 3G back on....until you shut down or sync the phone. I guess it has something to do with the Baseband.
