GPS Not Working in iOS5

Ever since i updated to iOS 5, navigation apps like Sygic and Nagignon are reporting that they are unable to get GPS signal. These apps were working just fine before the update.

Even other apps like Foursquare and Gowalla are completely off ... the only thing that seems to be working is Maps but its not able to identify current location correctly.

Its rather frustrating to see paid apps especially Sygic not working ...

Could this be the problem:

Someone at the Dutch Forum of iphoneclub.nl mentioned the following:

Perhaps the GPS signal is calculated, no only by antenna strength, but also by processor power and memory.

Because iOS5 probably eats more recources (memory, cpu etc), there isn't any power left to calculate the GPS signal in a good way....

Therefore the problem is situated most of the time on the 3GS, which is much slower than the 4 and 4S.

Could that be a theory?

Ok i found a way that got my GPS working again. I went to settings>general>network and turned Enable 3g <OFF> Then opened the Maps App (while connected to a WiFi network) and pressed the arrow so that the app could locate me. When it did accurately, i went back to settings>general>network and turned Enable 3g <ON> went back to Wifi then i turned it <OFF> (so i could check that the GPS Chip was working properly under 3g coverage) Went back to Map App pressed the arrow again and it located me perfectly! I hope this helps 😉

Since I upgraded to OS5 all my GPS-based apps did also stop working properly in my iPhone 3GS, including paid apps like CoPilot or MotionX-GPS. I use GPS location intensively. It has been suggested to be a baseband 05.15.05 problem. Since I am not an expert, does anyone have an idea whether Apple will fix this quicklyor they might have no intention to repair it, to push users buying newer iPhone versions, or alternative smart phones (which doesn’t look like an smart marketing strategy)?

I've been following this thread but have not seen my specific issues. All my gps functions are working. But.... I use the Navigon North America app and have had it since it originally came out a long time ago. I believe it was the first major gps app available on the iphone, anyway I considered it to be the best out there and still do, however with its' latest update and maybe because of iOS 5 there are several issues. It is now slow to pick up my direction changes and turns and quite erratic with the onscreen speed display - sometimes matching my speedometer sometimes way off from it.

Because of the issues I thought I would try one of the simpler, less expensive but highly rated gps apps. I selected MotionX Drive and while it works, it is extremely slow in detecting turns or changes in my direction if I stray from its' recommended route. If I miss a turn or exit, the onscreen map will show me on the exit or street that was on the route long after I've traveled in another direction. It takes so long to pick up where I actually am that I could get lost waiting for it to recalculate based on where I now am. It also has no speed display hence you can't set a speed limit warning which I find to be a significant deficiency. But the very slow recalculation and display of actual position is a major issue that would prevent me from trusting this app in an area that I was not familiar with. Since these issues seem somewhat similar between the Navigon app and MotionX, and the fact that MotionX has such great reviews, I have to believe that there is some negative effect from iOS 5 on all this.

I've started to experience this GPS problem since restoring my iPhone.

GPS is very vague, and only seems to update in Maps when you actually press the location icon.

It never locks on to a small blue dot, and any apps that require accurate GPS data don't work. (ie CoPilot, WalkTracker, GPS Status)

In the same place outside my girlfriend's 4S running iOS 5.0.1 'locks on' no problem, my iPhone 4 running iOS 5.0.1 will not successfully pinpoint my location.

It used to work fine before the restore.

I've had the GPS problem on my iPhone 3GS since the iOS5 upgrade - it makes Co-Pilot and Cyclemeter unusable. Since I value those two applications more than the ability to make phone calls, the situation leaves me very ... er ... "disappointed"! I also have the WIFI problem, ie. I regularly have to re-connect to my home WIFI manually as the phone doesn't automatically pick it up.

After buying 2 iPods, 3 iPod Touches, 1 iPad 2, and 2 iPhones over recent years - and obviously having been a big fan of Apple - I'm now looking to give the opposition a chance - I'm planning to buy an Android phone sometime soon. Let's face it, after paying Apple top money 2 years ago for this phone, only for it to be rendered useless by this defect, I'm hardly likely to give them another 500 quid, am I?

It's a pristine phone - not jail-broken - and I've tried all the suggested fixes, but none work:

* Set-up as new phone

* Delete the apps completely and re-install

* Reset Network Settings

* Reset All Settings

* Turn 3G off and only turn Location Services back on after a reboot

* Installed GPS Status (it agrees that the GPS fix is bad)

What is the point of a premium product, with a premium price, if one of it's main pieces of functionality doesn't work?

I have a 3GS updated to 5.0.1 with baseband 6.15.05 and am having similar issues. I don't use any NAV apps but do use maps often. I use SBSettings to toggle these 3 off and on. (Edge/Data, 3G, wifi)

When using wifi (No Edge or 3G), I have no problems, locks on super tight and blue dot is solid with steady ring zoomed in around it.

When turn off wifi and switch Edge & 3G to ON and then drive along, seems about 1/2 mile off and updates itself about every 30 seconds. It's the strangest thing. Its very inconsistent and intermittent. Usually it locks on for a couple seconds, then loses itself. Sometimes, the blue dot locks on but the blue ring never settles. it stays super huge around the dot and doesn't zoom in to the blue dot like when in wifi mode.

I guess since its only about 1/2 mile off of where I'm actually at, i can live with it, but its annoying as **** cause it used to work just fine.

The phone is jailbroken with minimal tweaks but this has been the case since iOS4.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
