GPS Not Working in iOS5

Ever since i updated to iOS 5, navigation apps like Sygic and Nagignon are reporting that they are unable to get GPS signal. These apps were working just fine before the update.

Even other apps like Foursquare and Gowalla are completely off ... the only thing that seems to be working is Maps but its not able to identify current location correctly.

Its rather frustrating to see paid apps especially Sygic not working ...

I have TomTom updated and it still does not work. But probably there are different problems related to GPS. For example, I cannot get Google Maps (built in app) to give me a fix that's better than 60m accurate.

With this acuracy no wonder TomTom refuses to even try to.

Other times accuracy is 200m to 10km !!! I do not need a GPS to confirm what city I am in :-)

Was your Google Maps app working ? did it ever provide you accurate position (dot blinking and expanding)?

I updated to 5.1.1 but problem is still there. Phone connectivity seems a little better (before it was dropping connection, going into searching very often (every 5 min aprox.).

iPhone 4s, iOS 5.1.1 ... inside drawer waiting for Apple to fix problem. Using Samsung Galaxy S II now.

Hi everyone,

I laughed a lot at first when i read the post from Simone girlanda

It was just incredible but not the way you could tought ! Do you tried to read the post she recommends ?... It's called : Ifixit, the free repair manual... and search for iphone, gps antenna

Incredible... just imagine to buy a car and replace yourself, not the wiper, not to refill, but just a part of the engine ;-))...

Simone... can i think it was a joke ? 24 steps without reassembling the phone... with at least 10 very hard steps.

My knowledge of english language and my quality of gentleman do not allow me to say what i think of this post from Simone...

Sorry for that so bad mood, 😠

The first thing is not to find a solution, but to make a diagnosis and be heard.

I want adiagnosis tooolllllll !!!! because it's obviously the very first step.

PS : bluetooth seems to be out of order too... snif !

Jeanseb,

what accuracy (xy) are you getting with your gps? You can find accuracy with the free app "GPS Detail". The reason I am asking is that Google Maps will not complain, but silently show low accuracy with a larger ring so if you might erroneously think it is working ok. My assumption is that since accuracy is not enough to guide you TomTom is refusing to start navigation (and it complains saying low gps accuracy). On the other hand, for Google Maps the 10 times less accurate position reading might be enough to show where you are "roughly".

Good accuracy should be 6-10 meters (20-30 feet).

Ok I've downloaded the app.. And sometimes I'm getting 10xy and then 100xy now I've got 65xy.. It changes all the time.. Even if it reads 10xy, and I check again in 2mins then it can read 100xy, I haven't moved any where, it's so random. Google maps has got a bigger ring around my position.. Thanks for telling me that. Apple have to sort this out.

When i upgraded to ios 5 i noticed that my (gps speed hd) stopped tracking my movements.. the gps would recognise my location but would not update it as i moved around in my car, so basically the gps was useless.. my screen was scratched to **** so i bought a new screen for a £5 from ebay and fitted that and because the phone was in bits i gave it a clean with compressed air, assembled my phone, plugged it into i-tunes and it asked me to upgrade to 5.1, i tried the gps speed hd again and it would recognise my location but would not track my movements, so again useless.. i dropped my phone on the floor and shattered the screen, so went on ebay and bought a screen for a £5er.. then plugged it in to itunes and another update, 5.1.1 ffs i said.. so anyway did that, all new shiney screen, all new os 5.1.1 and still no joy with my gps.. in frustration i slammed the phone on the table and boom the screen shattered.. ffs ffs ffs ordered another screen for £5, fitted it.. just switched it on before i left to go to work this morning and loaded gps speed hd and do you know what,, it freakin works.. now im assuming of course were not dealing with five dimensional objects in a basically euclidean universe.. my gps should still not be working.. so could it be the latest screen that has made it work.. or the slamming on table.. whatever the deal im happy its now working..

I finally got a replacement phone from Apple (I had to take it to a store in the US, they refused to change it abroad).

Now with iOS 5.0.1 and lately with updated iOS 5.1.1 gps works fine (accuracy is 5m while driving) and TomTom works.

For my phone thus it was a hw problem.

The simptoms were:

-) gps fix accuracy would change for no reason (from 60m to km/miles)

-) calls missed

-) calls dropped after 5 minutes (or sooner)

-) searching (phone signal) seen very frequently even in very well covered areas

I did not open to check for loose connectors since it would have voided a still valid warranty.

I lost 6 months os phone use due to weird Apple warranty policies, I was finally getting used to a Galaxy S II ... the new ice cream sandwich version of Android was not bad at all. Sync was still missing thou. Navigation was ok.

MAJOR BREAKTROUGH (for me)!

My GPS works again on my 3GS with 05.16.05.....i don't know how it became, but i did the following:

- Go to settings, general, auto-lock, change it from 1 Minute to NEVER

- Go to settings, general, reset, reset network settings (THIS WILL REBOOT YOUR IPHONE)

- Go outside, in a clear place with NO tree's, buildings, or anything blocking your view of the sky

- Open "MAPS", click NO on all that wi-fi crap, then click the little gps icon, and let it sync up with the satellites (this could take a few minutes (took me about 10-15 minutes to work 100%)

After that my maps app started to have the right signal again....but the navigation software still didn't work. I thought is still wasn't fixed, but when i was messing around a little later while my wife was driving the car, my navigation software suddenly worked!!!! YIEHAA!!! Hopes this works for all of you guys to 🙂
