Automatic wifi sync not working
I can do a manual wifi sync just fine, but when I connect either my or my wife's iPhone 4 to power, nothing happens. They do not sync unless I tell them to. Anyone else having similar issues?

i could sync manually, but not auto.
i checked the box to allow sync and my iphone dissapeared from the Devices list. plugging/unplugging did not help. restarting itunes didn't either. logged out and in again, iphone reappeared in the list and auto synced immediately.
seems to work everytime the phone is powered up now.
Not quite the exact same process, but this info was a gem ! Worked for 2 out of 3 of my devices (iPad 2, iPhone 4) but not the iPhone 3GS - this one is always stuck on last step "finding items to copy" whether it's now connected via USB or over wifi sync !
Thanks for the troubleshooting and I'll just try to work the 3GS mystery out - all suspiciously buggy to me Apple ??
Make sure wifi sync on itunes is checked, this box is seen on the summary page of the device. Thus once you plug in your iphone to your computer, you will see the screen with summary, info etc, make sure you click sync this "device" over wifi ( it is located at the bottom of the screen in the options section). now everything works beautifully for me!!! thanks for all your suggestions.
MrTyrell's directions worked perfectly for me. Now my iPhone syncs automatically when docked on my bedside iHome.
One thing to note, referring to MrTyrell's directions, my iPhone automatically synced when I plugged it into my MacBook Pro via USB. Despite this diversion from his steps it still worked for me. Cheers, and thank you MrTyrell.
MrTyrell's advice worked for me as well, after having tried everything. Once I clicked "Open in iTunes When Phone is Connected" the automatic syncing began to work and has worked since. Thank you!!!!
It's amazing that Apple always misses this stuff and the solutions and workarounds are always discovered by the users.
Thank you Spencer, simple checking off the Prevent ipods etc in preferences worked for me as well.
This solved my question
This has been killing me. Nothing I've tried worked. MrTyrell's solution worked on both my iPhone 5 and iPad (3rd gen).
Thanks!
PLEASE, Apple, fix this problem. I have tried most of these solutions, and they have all given me limited success. Point is, at the the end of the day, I can no longer plug in my iPad 2 and my iPhone 4S to the power source and know they will sync. That's how it used to be. Now (iOS 6) I plug them in, wait and see what happens, run down to my computer (MacBook) and close and re-open iTunes, or try one of the many other workarounds. Starting to feel like Windows/PC-land again after all these years. It is, simply put, glitchy. I am wondering about the posters here who write about it working after various contortions: does it continue to do say several days out? For me, some days, the iPhone is recognized and not the iPad, and other days the reverse. I hope this is resolved in an update soon!!
What worked for me was to turn on -back up to this computer- instead of back up to cloud in itunes on the summary page and it started working just fine.
Hi, Robert,
Yeah, I have the right boxes checked....some of us are struggling with this. Apple knows about it....says they are trying to fix it....Thanks anyways...
Another success for MrTyrell's. I'm not sure why it fails to sync intermittently, but those steps always bring it back for me on my phone. Pad and Pod have been sync since initial "repair sequence"
For people still struggling with this, and I am intermittently, the thing that helped me get more consistency out of the wi-fi sync had to do with the computer, more than the devices. On my MacBook, I have gone to the energy saving area of settings. I no longer let my hard drive go to sleep....at all. I understand that many feel this will also save the life of the hard drive, along with not powering down often. (Not very green, of course). In addition, I only let the display go to sleep in the wee hours of the morning when I am asleep. I find that the computer is more readily accessible to my devices (iPad and iPhone) when I try to sync or plug them in. It has cleared up 90% of my problems. I hope this helps others. Then when this does not work, the various shut downs (closing and reopening iTunes, turing the wi-fi on and off) will work the rest of the time. I am curious if this helps others.....
I've posted a blog about a POSSIBLE fix for this issue....or rather a solution. I had tried all of the tips/tricks mentioned in this thread and many others and NONE of them worked until I tried this. You can read about it here: http://thetechguyblog.com/apple/fix-itunes-wifi-sync-on-your-iphone-or-ipad/
