I kind of noticed it too but then again, I spent most of my first day trying out Siri. Assume that requires a lot of CPU thus draining battery life.
I've also set up location-based reminders which means geolocation is constantly on the llok out for where I am. Could also be explaining the drain.
Mine definitely doesn't last as long as my IPhone 4 did. Another thing I noticed is that I put it on charge last night and when I woke up this morning, it showed a plug where the battery display which says that it is fully charged yet the percentage said 95%.
my i4 doesn't last as long since updating to iOS 5. i think they rushed some things to make sure the company didn't lose any ground & standing with steve jobs dying. call it a conspiracy or whatever you like but someone at apple wasn't working 100%. especially with an update expected to iOS 5 for us with the i4 around 10-18 already.
If you're using push/fetch for your mail and you restored the new phone from the backup of the old, try to delete the mail account, reset the phone and add the account back again. In some cases mail got stuck, trying to connect to the server over and over again, causing the battery drain.
I have the same problem. The battery doesn't even last for two days. 1 1/2 days, then it is almost down. I'm using it with the same settings as I did before with my old 3GS. This lasted at least two days, sometimes three.
I never tried iOS5 on the 3GS. Maybe its a new "feature" of iOS5. In other threads in the apple forum, some people reported lower battery run time since they installed iOS5 at their devices (iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4).
I hope, this problem will be fixed with the next update!
This is probably caused by the Location Services app running all the time, I think someone else said try switching off Location Services>System Services->Setting Time Zone and any others that are using GPS location settings.
Thank you! Ingo2711. Your solution solved the battery drain.
Glad I could help to solve it 🙂
This seems to be the most common cause for the battery drain.

Good tip. This problem has been around since the first update 4 years ago. Some day they may fix it.
Yeah my battery died just sitting on my counter overnight in sleep. It was 100 percent and I missed my alarm. Then today it dropped like 1-2% every two minutes or so. I am trying the mail delete with hopes that it will work, but is it possible I should turn off location services... Will maps and weather still work with them off?
go to settings and go to location services and tap system services and tap setting time zone that always uses GPS and data plus if u r getting the chripping bird noise from iphone its the setting time zone i turned from my time zone setting and my battery is fine if u travel in us or world be sure to turn it back on in new time zone.
Location services is NOT running all the time, only when the arrow appears in the message bar. It is not a major consumer of power unless you are actively using it (such as using the Maps app), and even then it is a minor factor in battery life; loading maps is the big user of power in the Maps app. And turning off Location Services defeats Find my iPhone.
There are only 2 heavy battery consumers, cellular data and interactive games. Everything else (bluetooth, location services, WiFi, etc) are tiny in comparison to these and will not make a significant difference in battery life.
i said just go to system services and tap off time zone setting that has nothing to do with Find my Iphone it has a different tab to turn off and im using my 3GS phone and battery is fine after just tapping off time zone and data too since all i have is 2GBS of data each month
Thanks for your response! My wife's 4S battery life was similarly dismal (< half what it should be) and she uses IMAP for Gmail. I deleted and restored the account, I'll see if that helps.
The largest drain is if you have to use the exchange connection type. On mine the second I enable it the system drains at a rate of 1 to 2% every 5 minutes.
Unfortunately I must use the exchange option if I want to get my Gmail contacts to sync over the air. The only fix for it right now is to setup itunes to sync the contacts.
I have the issue regardless of being on wifi or cell data, all I have to do is have exchange setup.
