I've had my 4s since release date (in the US/ Colorado)- I'm on AT&T with a 64GB white phone- I've had an iPhone since 1st Gen, always AT&T. I've never had this problem before, but I'm having it with this phone- easily 50% of my outgoing calls do just as described above. The call looks like it's connecting, the counter starts counting time, but there is no sound. Sometimes, apparently, it connects and the recipient can't hear me and I never hear them, other times, it just times out and says call failed.

Wack

You can turn 3G off by going to Settings>Network> Then turn off cellular data. This has allowed me to make phone calls without any issue or disrupting any calls. The Apple support said that this might be due to a fault with the micro-sim since some of the phones are unable to use previous micro-sim's since they are not compatible with the iOS 5. Note: Very rare phones have this issue so you might want to check with you network for calrification.

Snap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Top phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you want to make a call>>> 15 calls ..5connected ...3 of them took 25 seconds to connect.. 2 of them there was no sound. 5 texts sent >>x2 arrived

Arranged a "Return" to Vodafone the same day I got it,

Brilliant bit of kit!!!!!!! but worthless if you cant use the phone!!!!

Do I try another one?? I think I will but I will keep returning them back for a new one if they do not not work! 3 chances!

Hi, everyone

Finally I went to the apple store to talk to the technician, I don't want to talk about how crowdy the store is and take me almost two hours waiting( even I reserved the appointment ), well, that is fifth ave in new York city, I understand that. But the technician said he can't duplicate the same problem, ( sounded like I am stupid and come for nothing?) and he said maybe the firmware crashed, (I had the problem as soon as I activated the new iPhone 4s), so, they give me a brand new phone with firmware crashed?) . OK , then he restored my phone , or rewrited, with all data erased, and he said my phone should be OK, I made two test call there which is fine , but as soon as I got home, same problem happened again, I am very frustrated. I am very tired, how can I do? Can I return it or exchange it even they can't duplicate the issue?

That's a drag. I would hate to get a replacement phone with the same issue because I have paid for a screen protector AND paid for Best Buy to put it on. I'd lose that $$ right off the bat.

I recently realized that many of my problem calls were placed at or around the same geographical location (an intersection on my way home from work). However, with my old phone (not an iPhone), I never had problems in that area. Guess I'll call Verizon to ask if there are known issues near that intersection...

I had a 3GS on AT&T and just moved to the 4S. It's been horrible. I don't know if it is AT&T or the phone but I need to make a decision fast on what I'm going to do. On the 3GS we experienced dropped calls, but with this 4S, it's more like I can't get the phone to even call anyone!

I was in Boston over the weekend. I kept trying to call my sister who was also in Boston so I could locate her. My phone kept saying it was calling her, but I wouldn't hear a ring, but saw the time counting by. Then it would say call failed. Then I got a bunch of "call failed" in a row. It lasted for a good 20 minutes. I had 3 bars on my phone. I was like WTH?! She said she was trying to call me too, but it kept going straight to my voicemail. She is on VZ with a Blackberry. I eventually got through by calling my neice, who is on VZ and has an iPhone 4. Not sure if I got lucky and finally got a call connection or what the issue was. I also tried sending a few text messages in Boston, also with 3 bars and they were failing to send too. I would keep trying and eventually it would go through.

Now I'm back in the Albany, NY area today, and I spent 15 minutes trying to call my husband to wish him a Happy Anniversay and I couldn't get through. Tried his cell (iphone 4s too) and the land line number. Same issue where it says "calling" but I hear no ring and nothing happens. Beyond frustrating. I was contemplating

canceling and going to Verizon, but now I see here VZ folks are also experienceing this. I guess that means it's the phone. So disappointed. I was so psyched to move to the 4s from my 3gs and I can barely use the dang thing. Now what? 😟

I am having the same problem with my iPhone 4s, 64 GB on AT&T. It works for a 1 or two calls in a row then when I go to make a call I do not hear a thing, I see it on the screen making the connection the person picks up I still can't hear them and they can not hear. It appears I have full bars when I try again say after reboot I only have a few bars but then it does work at least for a couple of more times and does it again. Also I have noticed when this happens if I speak into the phone I basically can hear myself like an echo back through the phone. Software or hardware glitch. Never had this problem with my 3g or 4 iPhones.

Additional information, the solution described in the link only works for problems with outgoing calls, where the connection seems to be established and the time counter is counting!!

It seems that there are also sim card related problems. If you got dropped calls or other network problems your problem might be sim card related. Many German provider began to exchange the customers micro sim's.

I also read that this problem only occurs when using an old sim in your new iPhone 4s (most of the people used their sim's in an iPhone 4 before). In that case it could help to deactivate the pin code, but that should be done in an other phone! Hope this helps.

Thank you for the link to that thread. I found another link/solution within that thread:

I followed the solution stated in CNET website it it seems to have done the trick :-) I didn't have any issues with the sound today

OK I am aware the issue stated here goes back to 2007 but I think it is a headphone jack issue.

I will keep you posted if the problem comes back

I am now concluding that for me, I'm having two separate issues.

1. No audio sound - I had been talking to my sister earlier via speakerphone. Then when I tried to later call her normally, is when I couldn't hear her or a ring and the time counter was going. There seems to be a glitch with switching between headsets, speakers, siri and normal phone calls. I never use a headset, and didn't use Siri that day. It makes sense now....I couldn't hear anything when trying to call her, because she was the last person I called on speaker. Then when I called my niece (a new number) it worked fine. The next day I had the issue again when calling my husband, but I had been listening to music with my headphones on just prior to trying to call him. This must be a software issue that I hope Apple fixes ASAP.

2. Dropped calls / calls failed. I'm going to try what my friend (an Apple employee) suggested. He thinks because I restored my 4S from my old 3GS it's just exaggerating any issues I had on my old phone. He suggested I restore my phone, set it up as a new device, and then resync. Hopefully that will do the trick.

IPHONE 4s call failed??!!!
