I too am having the dropped calls and incoming calls going to voicemail when i have good signal with 3g etc. Can I say this has only cropped up in the past week and is, in my opinion, definitely an ios5 problem as my girlfriend has had an iphone 4 for a year with no problems whatsover until she changed to ios 5 and has the exact same problem as me. Tried all of the recommended fixes ie. resart from scratch as new fone etc. network provider (o2 uk) says everythings fine signalwise (theres a 3g mast abot 50 yds from my house) and sim works fine with adapter in an old sony ericsson. Both our fones now only get and receive about 1 in 5 calls made. weve been calling each other with landlines and allsorts. My guess is an update will fix it soon or you can take it to the apple store for a replacement but as ive said, this isn't in our experience just an iphone 4s problem.

iphone 4s and 4 running ios 5.0.1.

Here is my own experience...........

"Ok i'm in French West indies Caribbean island and my Carrier is Orange, i've tried a brand new sim yesterday not microsim, they cutted it for me, not successfull, today i asked a guy at the shop to borrow me his microsim from orange, those micro sim they sell in contracts, i tested it for about 15 minutes in my 4S 5.0.1 it worked flawlessly no error on sms nor 3G or calls, unfortunelly they didn't had anymore Orange factory microsim today, they ordered for me from another shop in 48h i'll be sure about it, they'll change the old brand new not working sim with the microsim for free, i'm waiting but i've faith because i saw it working with no problems, even with the bug when you pull out the sim from the phone the carrier is still working with signal, with the microsim, this bug is not happening anymore you see immediatly the message NO SIM....i didn't try to reboot the phone but that's a good beginning...."

hi everyone in relation to my first post on my i phone 4s i have since been on to apple and they have restored my phone there were problems with the download kept get errors on the restore download in i tunes apple said it is caused by the anti-virus software you need to be pause for about 1 hour to get a sucessful download anyway getting the phone after this i still could get or make calls from my house or send text but once i left my estate an went 2min up or down the road it work fine they suggested another replacement sim (no,3) but this time from a O2 store not carphone warehouse so i went down the village and got a new sim it work fine in village and as i was down home in cork last week it worked fine there as well. since i have been back this sim has work fine in my house and i can make and recieve text this seem to have solved most of my problems hopefully!!! i still have noticed some quirkes i sometime still make calls and get no sound but when turn on speaker i can here the phone ringing and if i turn off the speaker u can then here ringing in the headset this can happen anywhere the odd time but this is better the no calls at all this sounds like a software glick. You never know the software update i downloaded tonight might fix it Maybe! will let you know if it does.

I too am having "call failed" more than 50% of the time. Normally it happens after a couple of minutes. Yesterday it happened after 23 mins. Just now it happened immediately as I answered the phone and then lifted it to my face. I spoke to Vodafone about it. They said it was to do with being to low in the priority list of people using the antenna and that I should reboot the phone every time I was expecting a call to get to the top of the list. But using *#105# I can see that some of the call fails are soon after connecting to the transmitter. I have at least 3 bars on the phone all the time. I've tried using it while driving some distance, with a headset, holding it in my hand in exactly the same way that I would hold it to my face, without error. I haven't done that lots of times but it would seem to indicate that it's not to do with changing transmitters or variable signal quality or the way that my hand holds the phone. I've read about siri and wifi on here. They're still areas I need to look into. The siri thing is interesting as it does seem to be when I hold the phone to my face. But sometimes I can be pressing it to my face for a long time and the call will drop without me moving at all. This is a black 32 gig iphone 4S. The other day they sent me a replacement. I restored from a backup of the other one and put the same sim in. The problem is exactly the same. I use my left hand to hold the phone, but I've tried holding the phone very carefully and delicately and asymetrically and it doesn't seem to help. Prior to this I used a 3GS in the same way for a year with no problems. Can anyone help?

I've gone to great length and put lots of hours into this matter trying to figure out what's causing this problem. And as you can see in my earlier posts I've tried everything and have had extensive contact with my operator (Tele2) in this matter.

I finally caved in and returned my iPhone 4S to Tele2 and they sent it to Apple which in return sent me a new phone a week later with iOS 5.0 installed. And TADAAHH!, Everything worx like a charm.

Note, I have the same exakt microSIM, a new phone with supposedly same hardware but iOS 5.0 instead of 5.01 and making and receiving calls and messages now works like a charm.

This is my tip, return phone and get a new one with iOS 5.0 on. This saves you a lot of time and headache.

Conclusion It's not the choice of operator and not the microSIM that's causing this problems. It's either the hardware in the first iPhone 4S that was sent out to customers (like mine), the software, or a combination there of.

Arggh. It's just happened again. This time I had "raise to speak" set to off for siri and I didn't have a wifi connection. I had 3 bars on the phone. To be clear this is the "call failed" problem where "call failed is displayed on the screen" and the call is dropped. It's not about not being able to hear the other person or any other problem.

In summary I have tried:

1. Changing the handset (4S 32 gig).

2. reregistering to the telecom provider just before the call (Vodafone)

3. The drive is less than half full

4. Holding it very carefully

5. Using a headset (the problem doesn't occur here).

6. Disabling siri "raise to speak"

7. Not being in a wifi area

8. Being in a good Vodafone area.

I guess the next thing to try in downgrading the firmware. No idea how to do this. Surely getting a new phone can't be the way to do this.

@Sam94

I have the same phone andnetwork as you. Whilst Vodafone recently reported problems with their 3G mastin my area, this doesn't explain the problems I have with failed calls, droppedcalls, no service, no network, poor reception etc, I have had since I upgradedin October.

I have applied everytroubleshooting suggestion that Vodafone and Apple Care have devised, includingrestoring the phone and applying the new iOS5.1 upgrade. I have also removedall apps from my phone, which only showed an improvement in battery life. Ihave had my phone replaced/exchanged three times in the past week and theproblem persists w/out solution.

Now I am reading that Appleplan to launch the iPhone5 in March 2012, WTH???? (Idon't usually follow these rumours but the Telegraph is reporting its arrival)Why bother releasing this version, if you were planning to redesign the wholephone and release that version a mere, 5 MONTHS!!! later? I feel cheated and Iam really disappointed with Apple. Trying to fix a brand new phone has beenunnecessarily stressful.

My friends had all planned toupgrade to i4s but are reluctant to do so because of the problems I'm facingand now will probably just wait until March, which I wish I had done.

Oh, and another thing, why don’t we have the choice to turn off 3G???

Pull it together Apple or face a revolt!!
