I get this exact problem.. Black Iphone 4S 16gb IOS 5.0.1. O2 Network. UK.
I have 2- 5 bars of signal but cannot recieve or make calls. Goes to "No service" then to "searching".
I constantly get "Call Failed" when making calls. I constantly get red exclamation marks sending text messages.
Ive had new 2 new sim cards. Still get same problem.
Had a brand new handset sent out. Still the same problem.
Same issue.
Call failed after a few rings, but network does no get lost. Happened few times in 1,5 months.
4s 16gb Unlocked, bought in San-Francisco Dec 2011, use in Moscow/Russia with MobileTeleSystems carrier.
Installing beta versions or disabling features like 3G should never be considered as a solution for anyone.
By the way my 3 phones are on 9A406 and still I get call failed.
Every single day that passes by I'm more and more impressed with the worst mobile Os I've ever used in my life. Since my very first mobile phone (a Motorola Startac) none of my devices (and I've had plenty of them) have dropped calls so badly. What's more I wonder if any of them ever did.
Apple and Tim Cook on it's behalf should be incredibly ashamed of this situation. We are paying ourself their lousy software (and hardware) engineering skills with every phone call we have to put back (and pay) everytime it cuts. Not to mention how ridiculous it is to tell someone for the second or third time in a conversation that you are sorry for the cuts.
iPhone 4 had antena issues... iPhone 4s directly cuts your calls...I'm eager to see what's next. I lack imagination to wonder how the next iPhone 5 is going to ruin our calls in the future.
Can anyone imagine buying a TV that resets every 10 minutes? Can anyone imagine millions of people still buying it... and not reading any mayor warnning on the media... for months now?
This is crazy.
The trouble of installing 9A406 is not worth it for the iphone 4s. It still keeps failing calls. There is something going on at the OS level.
One solution is for apple to add a good old "REBOOT" button to iphone 4s 😠
Frequent powering off and on it quite painful.
I think I was better off with my 3Gs 😁
Hello! I have the same problem!
Black Iphone 4S 32gb IOS 5.0.1 (9А406)
Model: MD242F
modem: 1.0.14
Apple, I dreamed of this phone. I saved money 2 months to buy it. I live in Russia and 730 euro to me is a real big money. But i buy it!!!! and now... What i have?
My friends takes offense at me, as can't phone to me. I can't call... To have to conjure with a tambourine with this iPod, to call someone. I tried all variants that found in the Internet - doesn't help.
Any official statement. It disappoints:(
Please, solve this problem faster.
No need to tell Apple about this. Some fool called me "whinner" because I complaint even when there is no official word from Apple to resolve this and other issiues with 4s and to make things even more interesting they deleted my post!
Same problem, I live in Kazakhstan and there is no official sellers, bought my phone in Abu dhabi airport. God i regret that I spent money on it. Tired of sleepless nights trying to find something to make it work. I hate I phones!!!!!!!!!!!
I've had my new factory-unlocked 4S for 2 months now (on Orange) and I often get "Call Failed" when trying to make a call - sometimes during a call too as the call is dropped. This happens even when the signal strength seems good. Also failures sending SMS messages. The problem seems worse when I am at home. When I am at home I happen to be connected to my home WiFi, so perhaps WiFi is contributing to the problem. Turning off WiFi sometimes helps but not always.
I also have the problem where the person on the other end can't hear me. If I switch to Speaker phone then they can hear me. There is nothing wrong with my microphone. This happens mostly with one particular caller who also has an iPhone. Perhaps the problem only occurs when calling iPhone to iPhone? (One user on a forum mentioned the problem occurs if the number called includes the country code but not if dialing 0 plus the area code (eg. dialing +12-34-... versus 034-....) I have not confirmed this.)
I upgraded from iOSv5.0.1 (9A405) to 9A406 because I also got the "No Carrier" problem at least once, but this did not solve the "Call Failed" problem.
Usefull link, obviously the guy is well educated with apple eq.

Trust me ppl I master the issues, reading days and nights, changing all kinds of combination, dying to solve the problem and I'm still sceptic about it, I'll see in the morning.
Anyways the combination that worked for me for the first time and I got my 4s 2 weeks ago, not a brand new but used and used normaly with another carrier micro sim.
Before everything I put the tape really slim one on the part of the card holder where micro sim chip is touching the metal construction of the microsim card holder. I saw that from one of the guys experincing same issues on apple support site.
iPhone 4S 32 gb black
firmware 9A406 >> downloaded and updateded from iTunes
Settings > General > Date and Time > Set automaticly is OFF ( u will notice here and also when u press clock and this is for new not back up iPhones so there's no restore mode, a fresh copy and begining of using the phone, so when u press clock u will see that u have time in Cupertino, u will also see that maybe not maybe yes when u go to date and time that u have time zone and if u have Cupertion or some other city then yours then u will not be able to have outgoing calls).
Then u have caller ID, waiting and forwarding, caller ID should be turned on, those other 2 off and u have to check also if u can see your own number showing in Settings > Phone)
Settings > General > Network > Celular Data ( this option is free of choice) I personaly turned it off, cause I don't have any internet plan with my carrier only calls and sms so I swtiched it off. I don't think that this can affect on connection and signal. It's simply a bug in a software. You can also check that when u go to Settings >> General >> ABout >> Diagnostic & Usage data >> here u gonna see alot of shiite happening
Settings >> Message >> iMessage off ( this is not necessary specialy for people from US, this option is desired to be turned off in Europe)
Settings >> WiFi >> turn off the ask to join networks ( this is for the ppl who have problem with wifi)
Settings >> Carrier >> Automatic ON ( if u put manual and then pick up the carrier which is yours, the software again will be mixing up with other carriers specialy if he's using some data to overcome to low signal or bad network, the phone will actualy use info from another carrier and continue to work on his own from the sim card.)
I think this is about it, the combination that works for me as it seems. Like I sad I'll update again and tell u about the sim card failure and no device and bla bla in the morning when I go to sleep so as iPhone(maybe he's having nightmares 🙂)))
I don't want to be subjective so I'll wait for tomorow and when I start to change my location. Im at home and my iPhone is working fine and Im saying this again for the first time without buging outgoing calls and messeges. Time and date solved my problem for now.
Good luck to you all !!!
Cheers
I went to the Apple Store tonight for the "call failed" issue. In my case, it would ALWAYS work if I disabled Cellular Data. I would also often have issues receiving calls. The problems were totally random and irritating. The guy at the store checked my serial number and ran some diags and said that based on those 2 things, my modem firmware was causing a known issue. He applied the fix. We'll know soon.
Just adding that I have the same problem with my iPhone 4S (for Apple statistics, in case they care). No failed calls (yet) but failed SMS messages and intermittent 'SIM failure' messages. Reboot helps so far - for a few days. Also on iOS 5.01 by the way.
Come on Apple... get your act together please.
Hi veryone,
I am on my third iphone 4s on o2 UK and still having dropped calls 4 months down the line. I am paying £41 a month for a phone that can't make and recieve calls. I'm not sure what my next step it except give my phone back and swap for one that might actually work. I am so fustrated and the apple shop just keep replacing the phone no other solution. O2 are saying its not their fault.
Why do we have to put up for this when we are paying so much money????
Lisa
Same here in holland, iphone 4s with tmobile. workaround is to make a call and put it on speaker, once you hear it ring then put it off the speaker and the call will work nicely.
Never had this issue on my iPhone4/iphone 3G or iPhone1
I feel like it's got to be a network issue due to the fact that my husband's and my iphone 4s' have both been working flawlessly for the past 4 months and now are BOTH having the call failed issue as of last night. The only thing I can think of that it could be is the AT&T data slow down for the top 5%??? Other than that NOTHING has changed with oue phones (i.e. we didn't drop them, change any settings etc.)
Upgrading to build 9A406 as described above did not work for me. Apple Support said I should restore to 9A406 again but this time not restore my iPhone contents from backup. Argh this means a lot of manual work reinstalling apps etc but so far so good. If I get SIM failure again I'll post.
