I'm having very similar issues over 50% of phone calls won't give you a ringing tone try just connect and then there's silence! Then if I switch to another number and you try to ring the speaker phone will highlight and you know it's going to do f£$k all then too. Have turned phone off and on but still get the issue. Doesn't seem to be any pattern can be the first phone call after turning on or the 5th but once it starts it's random. Could effect the next 10 'attempted' calls or miss a few. Have noticed that certain peoples contacts generally cause the issue which I've removed and re inserted in phone but again issues appear soon afterwards. (the numbers my sister to). Have been to the apple store already and was flogged off with a full apple reset but guess what it's still doing it. As I'm sure you can imagine its highly frustrating. The very basic it should do is make a phone call! My dad remarks his 8year old Phillips phone works everytime! I understand this is a most likely a software issue as it generally happened after I updated it to 5.0.1!
I have been having this problem with my iphone 4S on o2, and while it's only a temporary fix (as it undoubtedly happens again in a day or two), I do seem to be able to solve the problem by turning my phone off and on again.
However, I would really like to know what an Apple representative has to say on the matter....!
suprisingly i travelled to my home country and i was using TMobile Hungarian, i had an excellent battery life, while using tethering aswell. i got back to the UK and put my vodafone sim init and the battery got back to the "bad" state again... i think these problems are more related to the carriers not Apple.
Same problem here, my iPhone 4S 64Gb drops calls. Yesterday it cut me off in the middle of ordering the last avaliable seat on an international flight and it has been intermittendly dropping calls ever since. This is pretty annoying, I've put up with all kinds of shortcomings in the mobile phones I have had over the years. Unreliable Bluetooth in my HP iPaq, crappy e-mail client in my Nokia, a crashing music player on my Nokia, an inability to play video clips on several phones and the crappy Blackberry OS web browser... I leared to live with all of this. However, being able to make phonecalls reliably is not negotiable.
i m having the same problem since i have upgraded my 4s to 5.0.1 firmware 1.0.14 build 9a406. cant find the sollution restored it twice changed micro sim didnt work at all. my edge and siri starts working but as soon as i ask siri to call someone call failed massage arrise and signals goes down and phone start searching the network again. hope to fix it soon by someone's help
I am sick of this, it seems like every time I try to make a call it says call failed. I have also realized it's not just the callling but the entire network. It shows I have full 3G service but I can not call, recieve calls, text, or surf the internet. I live in Atlanta and am on AT&T, also I have multiple friends with the exact same problem. It is time for Apple to fix this.
It might be that your carrier is meant for data call and not voice call. I'm hooked up with data calls, so I can see 3G but not able to make voice call. That means you can browse the internet but can't make any calls. Alternatively, you can try to put the simcard on another phone and see if you can make any voice call. If it does, then the possibility is the iphone issue. If you can't make calls, then it's your service provider carrier.
The thing is I can NOT browse the internet during these times in which I can not make phone calls. SCENARIO - I go to call my buddy, I hit send, immediatley CALL FAILED, I hit call back, CALL FAILED, I repeat appoximately 5 times, same result, then go to Safari, nothing loads, try to send a text message, red exclamation point saying message could not be sent. Wailt 10 mins, still in the same location, everything works fine. This happens periodically throughout the day seems more often CALL FAILED then not.
OK, am not an expert in iphone. But after checking the expert-exchange forum, here's something that you can give a try.
OPTION 1 - from expert-exchange
"Did you try turning 3G off? 3G is the source of a lot of call failures"

try a networks settings reset
settings-> general-> reset-> "reset network settings
And ensure your airplane mode is disabled
The iPhone 4s does not allow you to turn 3G off
I did a network reset, no help
Airplane mode shows an airplane in the top left corner and doesnt allow any network usage period... this problem is only sporatic which means it comes and goes, airplane mode would NEVER allow it.
I going to get with my two other friends who are having this same problem and see if it happens at the same time... that should point me in a better direction
The iphone 4s does allow you to turn off 3G. I'm currently using one right now.
Goto Settings => General => Network => Cellular Data (set it to off)
Few other forums indicate that there's a possibility with the service provider simcard.
Make sure to head over to the Apple Store, if you can. The technician removed my SIM card and for a while the phone seemed to work. However, after the update, I still have issues with receiving phone calls (the phone won't ring) and can't surf the web.
After all the failed calls, the inability to use the web and not receiving important phone calls because the phone didn't ring... I am going back to a Droid.
Sorry Apple. I really wanted to give this phone a good try, but it's more trouble than it's worth.
For those of you who have no choice but to work with Apple, seriously, make an appointment to visit a local Apple Store. They are courteous and helpful, and appreciate the problems people are facing. The guy told me that Apple really is working on trying to find a solution to the problem. More patches will be forthcoming. I just can't wait that long because I have my own business and use my phone for it.
Yeah... a good suggestion indeed. Go to the nearest apple store.
Well that would turn off any use of the cell towers which would result in no network coverage because I am not in a Wi-Fi hotspot therefore would not help anything... I thought you meant turn off 3G so it could go to 2G or EDGE like the older iPhones would do but the 4s will not
