iPhone 4s mic issues

iPhone 4s 64gb on Telstra

Half the time when i call someone they cannot hear me, i checked the mute button turning it off and on, no difference, also reset the phone etc.Not sure if carrier or phone fault. Seems to only happen with out going calls, happens to home and mobile phones.

Anyone else have this issue or know about it?

Also when taking a photo with the flash, the picture seems washed out with like a whiteneaa

I agree. My second phone arrived this past Monday. I put it through its paces and all is well. I suspect as do you that it's a hardware issue. Must have been a bad batch that was widely distributed. It would be interesting to know the serial number sequence that Apple uses. That could lead to identifying the bad batch.

In any event, I second your advice.

Best,

Took my 4S with the intermittent mic problem to the genius bar today. Couldn't replicate the problem in store and the diagnostics checked out with no problems showing. The Genius was happy enough to replace the phone - just have to wait for one to come in stock.

He wouldnt confirm that this was a known issue - typical - but given the lack of questions or extensive testing, I think they are aware of a hardware issue here. I had previously done a DFU restore, the genius didnt suggest a further reset etc, so reading between lines, I think they know theres no point changing software/setup etc.

If you have this problem, get your handset back to Apple!

Good luck!

Was at the "genius" bar in the Apple store downtown Vancouver to replace the iPhone 4S again due to mic issue. Was told that it's a software issue and that they're not replacing because presumably this can be fixed with software, in the meantime it was suggested I should click the speaker on and off to solve the problem. No word on if and when Apple will release a fix. Apple has not said anything about this publicly and none of the media/blogs have mentioned this problem which seems to affect many users and perhaps all the iPhone 4Ss out there (they're too busy writing about funny interactions with Siri.) I'm very disappointed with Apple and regret buying the iPhone 4S, now I'm kinda stuck with it, I sold my iPhone 4 otherwise this iPhone 4S would have been back in the store.

You got Lucky that the apple store replace your iphone......... The genius at the apple store did nothing to fix the mic on my iphone and he even refuse to replace the unit!!!!!!!!!! Only thing I could do was return it to sta store I bought it as a defect product n had to reconnect my samsung phone to atleast have a working phone..........For me Apple only cares about making a sale and not fixing the defect product they put out....... So for those of you that Apple replaces ur iPhone you are LUCKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My 4S has similar issue. Paired it with car's BT, 50% of time the other end user can't hear me. It was working perfectly fine with my 3GS. I went to Apple Store in San Jose, at first she told me it "maybe" a firmware/software issue on my car and she can offer me an exchange if I want to give it a try. So, they agreed to do an exchange, but bad thing is they didn't have the new phone in stock in the store. So I called Apple support the next day (1-800-myapple), told the tech support guy the issue, and he put me on hold for 3 minutes, then told me they can do an "Express Replacement", meaning they send me a new phone, hold $$$ on my credit card, and will release the $$$ after I sent them back my old phone.

Got my new replacement phone the very next day, and it worked fine so far, no more mic issue. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yup. My Iphone 4S 32 GIG on TELUS does this. When I make some calls, the call will connect and timer will start... but I can't hear the other person, and they can't hear me. They eventually hang up, ending the call. Other times, I call and I can hear the other person.. but they can't hear me. Atleast not until I do the SPEAKER button trick. Where you turn on speaker phone, then turn it back off. Going into speakerphone enables the mic, and then exiting speakerphone keeps the mic on.. RARELY, I can make a completely normal call.. but not often. This happened since day 1, right out of the box. Awesome product there Apple. I greatly regret buying my first Iphone. Bought this phone at a Telus store, not Apple... so I took it back today and they are mailing it out to head Telus I suppose, to get it checked for problems. In which case if they can replicate this problem, I'll get a replacement. If they can't find a problem, then I guess I'll have a phone that works 'sometimes'. It almost feels better having no phone at all, but sadly I'll still get that bill in the mail at the end of the month, despite being robbed of my Iphone due to a stupid Apple issue. Thanks for nothing, RIM. Oops, I mean Apple... or, what? Maybe in time. :B
