iPhone 4s mic issues

iPhone 4s 64gb on Telstra

Half the time when i call someone they cannot hear me, i checked the mute button turning it off and on, no difference, also reset the phone etc.Not sure if carrier or phone fault. Seems to only happen with out going calls, happens to home and mobile phones.

Anyone else have this issue or know about it?

Also when taking a photo with the flash, the picture seems washed out with like a whiteneaa

Update:

I have determined what causes this issue. Please see below:

- placing an outgoing call and immediately after pressing the call button, putting it to my ear. This will cause both parties to not hear each other. Toggling the speaker button on and off will restore the sound both ways.

- holding the phone off the face until ringing will work all the time.

- usingn Siri through the car Bluetooth system will work all the time.

- using the car Bluetooth system (Sentra 2010 LE) to dial through phone will fail 50% of the time in 2 ways:

- metallic distorted sound

- no outgoing sound

By the looks of it, it seems to be a combination of proximity sensor and mic switching which could be both hardware and / or software.

Will wait for the sw update and if no change will ask for a replacement. I haven't tried a restore. Has anyone had any luck with restoring?

Thank you!

I am having most of these issues with my iPhone 4s. Incoming calls seem to be fine, but outgoing calls seem to have one of the following issues:

1) the mic does not work. I can hear the other person, but they cannot hear me.

2) The line connects, but I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me

3) There is an odd distorted digital or metallic sound, very poor quality

I really hope this is a software issue and Apple issues a fix soon!

Yup. 64GB black 4S on Telus network in Canada - finding that about half of outgoing calls cause a metallic, glitchy noise on dial-out and then the handset mic doesn't work - I can hear the other party on the call, but they can't hear me. Sometimes I can trick it into working by pulling the speakerphone trick.

Bluetooth disabled, Siri 'raise to speak' disabled.

I love this device, but it seems to me that a really expensive phone should be able to... phone, hey?

I'm having pretty much the same thing. My iPhone 4S is my first iPhone, although the rest of my family have had iPhones for ages now.

When I speak using just the phone itself it's fine, but when I use the remote/mic (which I prefer to do) after around 15 minutes the other party suddenly go very loud and they can't hear me at all. They're so loud it becomes completely distorted and really horrible to listen to. They say they can just hear themselves. It originally happened on just outgoing calls but it has happened once on an incoming one.

This seems to happen more when I am at my flat (I am a student), then when I am at home with the family. In fact, it hasn't happened once when I am at home. I phoned Orange to see if it was network congestion causing the dual antennas to get confused or something like that (I'm a pretty technical person) and they said it was the first report they'd had from anyone about this fault ever.

They've recommended I reset the phone using iTunes. Yet that won't do anything surely?

I spoke with Apple support today. There are not admitting to any know mic issues. All they told me to do was a "hard reset" by holding the top button and the home button for 8 seconds. After the phone reset I made some phone calls and it still wasn't working. He said it very well may be a hardware issue and the only way to get it fixed is to send my phone back to Apple. They will send me an empty box, and then I have to ship my phone back to them. It could take a few weeks to get my phone back. Very frustrating!! They give you another option where they will send you a brand new phone right away, and then you ship your old phone back in the box, but they charge you $30 for this option. I don't feel like I should have to pay ANYTHING since my phone is brand new and it hasn't been working properly since I got it!

I expected better from Apple. The whole reason I switched from my Android phone to an iPhone is because I wanted a phone that was reliable and worked glitch free...so much for that.

I have been having the same issues as most of you. When in my car, I could make one completed outgoing call using bluetooth (over the car speakers), but all subsequent calls would go to the phone speaker instead. And turning the speaker button on and off didn't work for me. Nothing I tried worked. With regular outgoing calls, I again could only make one outgoing call at most, and all the rest would result in the people on the other end not hearing me or I couldn't hear them. Very frustrating! My phone would only work as a phone about 15% of the time. I called Apple and made an appointment at the local "Genius Bar" (I live in St. Louis) after getting nowhere with the person on the phone, who denied any known issues and insisted that I do all the testing I had already done over again on the phone with her (restore, etc.). I had read all the previous posts and wanted to get a new replacement ASAP, before they started giving out refurbished replacements. At my appointment, they were able to reproduce the issue on the second connected/completed outgoing call, even after another restore, so they gave me a new one, no charge. I was there less than 20 minutes and two more people came in with the exact same issue!! I was sure to point that out to the "Genius" I was working with, who had originally denied that there was a known problem. My new phone works great so far (27 hours)! Tested it there in the store before I left with it. Good luck to everyone still fighting with these issues!! Go get your new phone before all of the phones already turned in start getting refurbished and distributed as replacements.

Update - Another Issue Discovered and The Meeting With The Genius:

Issue:

In addition to what I described in my previous posts, few days ago, reading another users posting, I came across an issue that I never noticed because I hadn't used the phone with the ear buds till then. Here is the issue and it seems to affect a number of users:

1. Plug in the ear buds jack

2. Try to place a call (call your landline for example to get feedback of what happens at the other end)

3. As soon as you get connected, you will see that the phone switches to speaker mode, the speaker button on the

screen turns blue and ... good luck switching it back to the ear buds.

Now this last "feature" was the straw the made me decide to not wait for a software upgrade, especially since this problem apparently has been present on some iPhone since revision 1.0.2. There is even a "fix" for it which did not work for me. Do a Google search for the string "No iPhone audio (speaker or earpiece not working)? A simple fix" and choose the CNET article.

Now what happened next:

1. Called Apple and the associate suggested to go to the closest Apple store and get a replacement.

2. Booked a Genius appointment.

3. Went to the store and my iPhone was kind enough to perform and not hide any of his "unique (de)features".

4. Got a replacement. The replacement came in a black plastic box. The Apple associate assured me that it is not a refurb but a replacement packed unit with no ear buds and no charger (a saving money scheme)

5. Tried it in the store to make sure none of the 3 issues I had before were present. Phone seemed to be OK.

6. Got out of store, placed another call and 1 minute in the call ... static and ... silence. From that moment, dead on the phone feature. Would not place or receive any calls.

7. Went back inside, the guy became annoyed. He blamed it on the carrier. Had my old 3GS with me (on another account) same carrier, was working fine.

8. The guy resets the phone and phone feature starts working again and it's been since with no issues experienced so far.

9. Now I am restoring from backup of my previous phone. Will update the community shortly on what the outcome of this apparently "bad" actions is.

Now, a story a bit off topic and .. emotional 😕.

Four of my coworkers were getting ready to buy iPhone 4S's. I gave them a demo of my previous sick 4S performance and sent them links to the message boards. Guess what, today they went and bought iPhones all of them.

Conclusion: It does not matter how it works as long as it has an Apple on it! The lemmings will jump off the cliff. And guess what, I am one of them.

hardware problem - iPhone 4S 64gb White

I have received a replacement iPhone today.

But I am still having the same hardware problem, when using the headphones in a call - I cannot hear the other person and the other person cannot hear me.

I have to put the phone on loudspeaker and then switch it back to the headphones, this then works for couple of minutes and then I'm again faced with the same problem.

Since Ive had the replacement I have made 20-30 calls and have had an issue with every call which i've made using the headphones.

Firstly, I was given a refurbished iPhone even though the my original iPhone was within 14 days of Purchase.

I would like for someone to get in contact with me and resolve the issue I am having as this phone is absolutely useless.
