Half the time when i call someone they cannot hear me, i checked the mute button turning it off and on, no difference, also reset the phone etc.Not sure if carrier or phone fault. Seems to only happen with out going calls, happens to home and mobile phones.

Anyone else have this issue or know about it?

Happens to me with approx 80 percent of incoming or outgoing calls. If you use the speakerphone option, then people on the other end of the line can hear you. I don't fancy to have all my calls on speakerphone but at least I can tell people, "yes, I am here". Spoke with a tech on the phone and he said, "I can't say this is the first phone call I have received regarding this issue" The conclusion was Siri is causing an issue with the mic. I do notice when the mic cuts out on phone calls Siri cannot hear me either. I have read a few posts where Siri was turned off and that seemed to fix the issue. I use Siri in the car to respond to texts for me and place calls so I wasn't thrilled about having to do that.

I think apple got so carried away trying to keep everyone's interest in the iPhone they forgot about the basic phone functionality. What's the point of having a phone that you can't make calls on? I am amazed at how much publicity the battery issue got and the mic issue gets next to none.

im on my second iPhone 4s (32 gig black) and still having mic issues been to the apple store over 8 times!!!!!

i hear my echo and the other person sounds like there talking really low, i found a fix but its annoying but put the phone on speaker and take it off speaker and it goes back to normal. the girl at apple said its a service provider issue and they wont give me another phone im ****** as ****. but the battle still continues with apple

Was there ever a resolution to your problem? I have a genius appt tonight but I already went in over the weekend for this problem. We did a reinstall at the store and it clearly didn't solve the problem. Previously this happened only on outgoing calls (either with a wired headset or holding to my ear) but today the person who called me back (because she couldn't hear me on the first three calls) couldn't hear me when she was the one dialing. Frustrating!!

Is the best solution to get a new phone?

There has been no official solution but my money is on Siri. I tried listening to my voicemail the other day and every time I lifted the phone to my ear Siri kicked on and asked what I needed help with. The only way I could listen to voice mail was on speaker. Same thing with phone calls, it works fine on speakerphone. I ended up turning Siri off all together which seems to help. The last time I reset the network on the phone it worked fine until I asked Siri to set a reminder for me. Then I was back to the same issue with the mic.

If you read through these posts you will see lots of people got their phone replace 2, 3 or 4 times and they are still experiencing the issue so I don't know if replacement is the answer. It is frustrating. How can you have a phone that can't make phone calls?

Ah, I can only see those settings if I have Siri turned on.

I think this may have also solve my mic issue. Since I have turned off the "raise to speak" I have been able to make and receive calls without an issue. Of course, it's been less than a day but I have never been able to make it this long before with the mic working. This would explain why some don't have this issue if they configured Siri with Raise to Speak > off

Thanks!!!!

Again, just like the spotlight search issues, this is no solution, is a workaround for a really annoying issue. There shouldn't be any need to do workarounds, specially on the phone most primitive and core feature...making calls. If that doesn't work, everything else doesn't matter. Again is such a shame to see a great product failing for a buggy software and is also very disappointing to see no offici statements from apple. We're wasting call minutes and most important compromising our communications. I moved from BB, I could not control my integration systems from there, I couldnt take descent pictures and I couldnt browse comfortably, but at least I could make phone calls.

Well I know for sure it is only the Iphone 4S issue. I have a Iphone 4 that I gave to my wife when I upgraded to the 4S and I never had that issue and I did all the updates. The mute issue started when I was txting the Siri kicked in when I did not hit the mic icon and then after that all calls I made were muted. I had to hard boot the phone to make a phone call. Then I noticed that when I was txting someone I would recieve the msg they were typing and then it just stopped showing up like it should. I had to back out of the txt msg and then touch the msg that just came in from the same person. I had to hard boot to get it to work right again. This seems to be a Siri issue that Apple has not addressed yet. I hope they fix it soon.

Hi there, I am having the same problems with my recently purchased iPhone 4s 16g. Have tried everything including your suggestion but still no success. Btw I m from Malaysia and the IPhone 4s was only launched on the 16th December. It angers me that Apple has turn a deaf ear to everyone and Apple ' s latest ios 5.01 update build A9406 did not rectify theseproblems I was using a IPhone 4 before this and had no such issues.

Hey Guys,

Im on my 4th Iphone 4S, firstone exchange for a new one from At&T, last two from Apple refurbished.

NONE of them have a mic that works. They other caller cant hear me for the first 15 seconds of the call.

I saw a post somewhere and tried it. Seemed to help. He said it was related to the proximity software regardless of the Siri settings. When I push CALL to make a call I usually put the phone directly to my ear. He said hold it in your hand until it connects then to your ear..It worked..Stil need a fix

I’m a dedicated Apple product user (two MacBook pro's, two IPhone 4s w/two year agreement,IPod touch, iPod Nano). For this to be occurring to my IPhone 4s without apple fixing it, shed poorly on Apple and their products. Especially considering the death of the Great Steve Jobs. The lack of issue resolution by the CEO's,Customer service personnel, and thee Apple Corporation as a whole tells me the consumer that without Steve Jobs this corporation has reached its peak. If this is this case then I two have reached my peak of consumption for apple products. Fix it and soon apple or you’ll have to face the backlash from customers everywhere.

Thank you.

Got my new 4S about 10 days ago and having the same problems described above. First noticed it with Siri - it seemed "she" couldn't understand me at all. After some calls and complaints from those on the other end, I'm thinking it was the mic that was messing Siri up. Not sure if I should get a replacement or what. Anyway, just putting my "vote" in for a fix, please.

Same issue here... iPhone 4S does not work with Facetime (people on other end cannot hear me) nor does it record sound when registering video with camera app. Sound is ok when making phone calls, also works with dictafone app, Siri is hearing me as well. Repairing/resetting via iTunes did not cure the issue.

I have arranged a replacement just 5 mins ago. I hope the new one will work.

After having followed this thread for a while I think we might conclude that:
1. the problem arises in several forms. The core problem being the mic not working for outgoinjg calls

2. the problem generally arises after some time. And it might be intermittent.

3. There is no fix. In a few instances starting from scratch seems to have helped (temporarely?)

4. Apple replaces the device the moment you metnion the mic-problem, it seems they are aware but have different priorities.

5. There are a few instances where replacements showed the same problem. This suggests that the problem does not concern a few in 100000 but rather a significant percentage, but only the replacement service really knows the magnitude of the problem.

5. To me it looks like an interaction of a hardware AND a software problem. This is possibly quite complex.

Every problem can be solved if enough resources are spent on it. Apparently Apple doesn't want to spend enough. I think we need someone with investigative journalistic talents finding out how big the problem is, what Apple is doing about it and subsequently informing a large journal.

Under pressure I suppose Apple with adjust its priorities.
