iCloud backup problem

Hello everyone here is my issue.

I updated to iOS 5 last night thinking I will have avoided the "rush" to upgrade. So here is my iCloud problem.

1.) Last night I enabled iCould, then performed a manual backup, which took about 20 minutes, but then when it was complete it kept saying "last backup unknown" and then in managing storage it stated no backup ever took place.

2.) Today, I decided to totally delete my iCloud account and then try again, now it won't let me turn on iCloud backup, it just says "cannot activate iCloud backup" with the option of trying again... BUT, if I "force" iCloud backup through iTunes it will turn on iCloud, which is where I am currently at.

3.) So now that iCloud has manually been "forced" in via iTunes, when I go to perform a manual backup on the phone it says "there was a problem completing the backup, please try again later". Its been doing that all day.

Anyone have any ideas? If its on Apple's side that's fine, I just want some sort of confirmation of that.

Thanks for the help!

Well, after creating a second Apple ID to use iCloud, I noticed yesterday that my original Apple ID all of a sudden started to work as well, just like with many others here. My first thought was "great", but then I tried to sync my 726 contacts with my original Apple ID iCloud. Only 650 contacts are being synced, no idea why, no error message (just like always with Apple gear), it's simply not completing all 726 contacts. I tried it a couple of times, but to no avail.

So then I went back to my new Apple ID - all 726 contacts got synced again. Seems there are more things wrong with those Apple ID accounts than just the backup issue.

Meaning regarding iCloud, I will stick to my newly created Apple ID.

What a painful start for the highly acclaimed "iCloud". If it wasn't for Siri (being unable to handle more than one e-mail address if the contacts are synced via Exchange protocol), I would get rid of "iCloud" immediately and switch back to Google Sync which worked much more reliable.

Hi, had the same problem in Switzerland on an iphone 3Gs. Everything went smoothly except icloud backups from iphone. I called the Apple support center, and they very nicely helped me (for free as my iphone is more than 2 years old...)

I went on the phone with a senior Assistant and deleted my icloud account on the phone, starting in "Mail, Calendar, Contacts" and, after creating my account again, oh miracle, it worked! (although i'm not sure if it wasn't a "spontaneous" healing...). And all that with my "old" Apple ID, the one from MobileMe.

Anyhow, iCloud backups are running smoothly now.

Hope everybody will have the same luck i had!

Well, as i was very scared to loose evrything, I first made a backup through iTunes. Then i checked everything was fine on iCloud (web, as I have a PC), then deleted the iCloud account on the iPhone (red button).

I tried x-times to do that directly through "iCloud" in "Settings", and it never worked; but when I went to "Mail, Contacts, Calendar" and deleting the account from there, then creating a new account with my old MobileMe/AppleID it worked (as I said, if that was the solution, or someone at Apple fixed something, i don't know). It even did the automatic backup when plugged to power, locked and connected to Wi-Fi.

I could restore everything from the iCloud backup (except music, as i only have my CD's, and didn't buy them through iTunes).

Hope it helps

Well, I did it that way, deleting the iCloud account from the mail preferences and setting it up again. This time the backup worked, but I am confused about something: iCloud is telling me that I have 7.8GB of space remaining but the backup size as reported by iCloud is only 2.0GB. There doesn't seem to be a way to see the actual backup file on the cloud to verify its size.

I also don't like the fact that should I decide to alternate between backing up in iTunes and iCloud, that once I switch to desktop backup my iCloud backup gets deleted. It seems to me that they have lots of work to do on this yet.

I'm not 100% sure about this, of course, but I'm basing that assumption on the fact what whenever I've switched to backing up on the computer, I get some kind of message that says something to the effect that are you sure you want to disable backup to iCloud and backup to iTunes? All iCloud backups will be deleted?

Now, this could be because I'm initiating this from the iPad itself, rather than from the desktop. I'll try it that way and see what happens.

I just upgraded from an Iphone 4 to an Iphone 4S. My old 4 was backed up to the cloud. I can't backup my new 4s because my old phone's backup is taking up a lot of room. I can't delete the old backup. I'm tried doing it on the old phone, my new phone and on the icloud control panel on my windows 7 computer.

Any ideas?

I also had this problem initially. What I did was sign out of iCloud on the Windows iCloud control panel. Then I deleted the iCloud account from both my iPhone 4S and iPad 2 by going to settings, clicking on iCloud and clicking on "Delete Account". After that, I rebooted the devices, went back into settings, iCloud, and re-created the iCloud accounts with my Apple ID. After that, I was able to delete the (in my case) incomplete backup, and then I bought more space (50GB, in my case) since both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4S are 64GB. I haven't had a problem since.

My iPhone backs up. iPad does not. Same apple ID.

The worst thing is it does not give any clue how to figure out the problem. It just says "there is a problem...".

BTW, with all the backup problems, are we sure that we can restore a backup?

I had a backup before and a red "delete backup" button. Then I turned off iCloud backup and back on again. Old backup disappeared.

Forget it. I'm going back to iTunes.
