iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

Are you sure about this? Myself and others in this thread who have gotten a replacement seem to be overwhelmingly reporting that the issue has completely disappeared.

This is certainly not a scientific estimation by any means, but I have been scouring the forums for these types of posts and have read of many people on their 2nd and 3rd replacements who are still seeing the issue. There are additionally several here who have said that they experienced the problem as soon as the Apple tech handed them their new phone.

Either way, I'm rolling the dice and have made an appointment for Saturday. We'll see what happens. I hope you're right GasMan and I don't have a problem after the replacement - but as someone who uses the phone for important business, the whole speakerphone toggle solution is not functional for me - and having been through several Apple software fixes, they're usually not forthcoming on something like this.

I'll report back after Saturday...

Well, mine used to be about every other call, or 50% with no audio in the ear piece. I have not used bluetooth with this phone yet, nor the corded headset.

Lately though, I have noticed it not happening hardly at all. I just did 10 test calls to my office phone, and every one of them had audio in the ear piece. The interesting thing I found out yesterday, is that when it seems to be working almost 100%, if I kill the "Phone" process, and then launch the phone process again, I almost always have no audio on the first call I make, 100%. I just tried it on the 11th call I made to my office phone, and sure enough, after killing the phone process, and launching it again, the next call had no audio.

I had an appointment for Apple to call me, they took down all the issues I was having, as well as asking me what I tried, but eventually just said I needed an appointment to take it to the Genius Bar. I had that setup for Wednesday evening, but have decided to wait a little longer to see if apple addresses this issue in the next week or two. If it keeps up, and never gets addressed, then I will most likely make another appointment to take it in to try and swap it for another one, but want to make darn sure it's not doing this when I leave.

I'm hoping that killing the phone process is repeatable, which would provide a good way of testing before leaving the store. Maybe others can chime in here, and see if you have the same results.

LOL, okay, well, nevermind. I just tried it two more times, and both times after I launched the phone app (after killing it via multitasking), I got audio...

So frustrating. It's inconsistancy leads me to believe this is a software (firmware) issue instead of hardware, and that it is triggered by a random set of events happening at the right time (like perhaps it is based on timing, such as how soon you put the phone up to your face when making a call). Seems like if this is the issue, it is happening often enough with a given number of handsets, that it should be easily replicated by Apple engineers, and with test code, they should be able to pinpoint the issue...

Am in Canada with Bell Mobility and am on my 2nd iPhone 4GS with same issue of no audio on outgoing calls. Have asked them to "downgrade" me to iPhone 4 and they refuse, so must go to "Genius" bar once again for same complaint. First time to reset the software, about 30% of my ougoing calls had this issue. Once I left Apple store, problem was worse, so went back and they switched the phone and wouldn't you know it, my 2nd call ever on that phone had the issue. They refuse to accept that there is a problem yet they know, they must! Am going back for 3rd and last time tomorrow, will either demand refund or downgrade to iPhone 4!

Now on my second phone with the opposite problem. When I make a call I can hear them but they can't hear me. Seems to happen when I haven't made a call in a while. Made another appointment with the genius who could not get the phone to do it when I was there and he told me he could not believe that I had issues with another phone and if my third one has issues then insinuated it was me! As if I would go to the trouble for fun to make a appointment at Apple and battle through the store with all those hundreds of customers. Apple, admit your faults and recall and give everyone a new replacement phone from a white sealed box please. I don't trust the black box phones! I am sick and tired of driving to your store all the time with a faulty phone.

I understand (reluctantly) that new technology sometimes have issues, however I am outraged at the fact that apple steadfastly refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem. I spent nearly 8 hours on the phone and at genius bar trying to remedy, when in fact, the remedy is beyond my capabilities with my phone. And to be told I am the only one adds insult to injury. I think Apple needs a media blitz ie: this issue. At least any other "fools" out there that actually believed they were the only ones could find some solace?

I have another appt. at apple on Monday. The "new" phone I was given was no better than the one I traded in. My sister has a 32GB and has had no problems. I hoped that it was exclusive to 16GB, however after reading all the posts don't believe that is true. I am not sure about the problem being resolved to satisfaction until Apple admits there IS a problem!! Rep told me "oh everyone must just be venting on forums and not calling in" please....

I was talking just now to Apple Care, the representative asks if im using my iPhone right now (I was), he says, well I can hear you loud and clear. They also keep pretending that you're the only one with that problem when this support community is talking mainly about this problem. The iPhone is a great product really, but being treated like this makes me think about seeking other great products like Android.
