iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I don't know about other European countries, but that's what official Apple iPhone Warranty says in the UK:

Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its authorized distributors originally

sold the hardware product and provide warranty service at an Apple Retail store or the

authorized distributor, where service is performed at the location.

So I wouldn't be so sure about freely exchanging your defective phone in any European country.

Hi everyone - old commenter here. I purchased my 4s in December and was reporting similar problems for weeks. Now for some reason the outgoing call issue has fixed itself. I have no idea how or why. That said. I've noticed that my network signal strength has improved significantly. Previously I was only getting a two bar signal for 90% of the time and I would experience the silent audio issue for a quarter of outgoing calls. Now I get a full signal all the time and as yet I haven't experienced this audio problem since. I know that there are a myriad of different factors that can trigger problems in these complex machines. But I've tried my best to trigger it using the music app, Siri, turning on the percentage counter for the battery, etc and thankully it hasn't happened yet. Even my Siri application no longer tells me that it can't connect to the network and I've been using it heavily for weeks. I don't know about others but for me personally the problem has gone away and I am just grateful I didn't swap this phone at the genius bar ten times. Finally, I now have a fully functional iphone. (touch wood).

I am experiencing the same "no audio" problems for a while now but was hesistant to bring the iPhone in for service and maybe get a 2nd hand iPhone back.....

Since it is a software problem I rather wait until 5.1 is out (they say beginning of March)

Now it got worse because my WiFi connection had no connection once in a while. The WiFi signal is strong and everything works (laptops, iPads etc) but no internet connection on the phone.

After a reboot it functions again but it is very annoying because you don't notice it happening in the first place.

I now updated the firmware to 5.1 beta3 (Yestrday) and it looks like all is OK now but it is really too short ago to say all is well.

Hello,

I have (had) the fallowing problem. For some calls (not all of them and it didn't matter if it was outgoing or incoming) i couldn't hear the other party. If i would switch to SPEAKER, i could hear the other person. Also, after switching to SPEAKER and than back to headset, i could hear the other person.

Not sure if this fix has been mention before in this thread ( very long thread ...), but i fix mine by restoring to factory and then:

1. if the siri is active, try disable "Raise to Speak"

or

2. If the Siri is inactive, make it active and then disable "Raise to Speak"

Good Luck!

Apple support *****!! not sur which one is worse,, Apple or AT&T?

I have 2 iphone 4S and one has this problem. With the no sound on some outgoing calls. complained to AT&T first since i bought it from there. since it is past 30 days, they simply don't take the blame, pass it on to Apple. what a great customer service, paying the money to At&T and you would expect service from them, why torture customer.

ATT reset the network settings (without warning me about i may lose all my Wi-FI passwords etc). Took it apple the Great Genius service center, and they do not talk to you without appointment. Great!! i dont have one Genius store nearby and I have to make appointent and drive 50 miles for this issue again. the most ridiculous thing is that, they bluntly say they never heard this problem before. crap!! if they are honest, they could google this issue right infront of me. anyway, they say they cant replace the phone because I bought it from ATT, and they would have to setup a genius appointment. and replicate the problem. then send it to apple..and wait for the fix.. BSSHHHTTT!! i am in IT and i know how ridicuous to hear such crap from the hypocrites posing as great customer sevice tech experts. I am sure there are lot more users who go thru issues with Apple crap and keep quiet bcoz they do not want to feel embarrassed when they bring out such issues and finally wasting time and energy.

my ipad freezes once in a while, apps crash, and yet i kept quiet, until the outgoing calls is such a nuisanse. it's the phone that comes first as the device before the apps or other features of the phone!! why call it smart phone when it cant serve the basic feature properly. This is my last apple device and i am going back to Samsung or anything other than Apple and ATT combination.

I just got my White iPhone 4S 16GB yesterday. I have this problem on incoming and outgoing calls. The problems occured immediately out of the box on most calls. Toggling the speaker button fixes the problem.

I just tried the Voice Memo suggestion. It didn't work for me.

Interestingly, the only calls that I was able to place and recieve without having this problem is when the iPhone was connected via bluetooth to the Ford Sync feature of my truck. Go figure.

Hey Guys,

I had to go to the genius bar Friday because there was something going on with my battery. The Genius told me he would give me a new phone. I told him I wanted to test it before taking it. He said that was okay. He got it going and handed it to me to make a call. I called my sisters phone. She was standing next to me. Her phone rang, but I heard nothing on the phone I was holding. I told the Genius that I heard nothing. He took it and heard nothing. He tried pressing the speaker but heard nothing. He was amazed that even the speaker didn't help. He went and got another phone. This one worked and is working. He said he had been a phone tech before moving to this state and taking the job at the store. He now is a believer of the problem, because he experienced it. He said he was going to put a write up with that one, because it will go back to Apple. I thought this was interesting as other Geniuses that I have talked with before never believed the problem exists. Thought I would share this with everyone on this thread.
