iPhone 4S - Outgoing call no audio

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

Anyone else having this issue? I've found a few forums online stating people have had luck hitting the speaker button on and off to get it working again but it hasn't failed in the past 20 minutes for me to test that theory..

Thanks...

I just got off the phone with AT&T, and they said they are getting a large volume of calls on this topic. He said they are aware of the issue with the 4S. He said they think it is due to all the activations in a short time. Doesn't sound right to me, but I am trying it. They said they are resolving some of the issues by re-establishing the connection and re-registering the phone. They reset both of our phones and are calling back in three days to see if it worked.

My iPhone 4S AT&T 16GB does the same thing - no audio, dead silence in outgoing calls about 80% of the time. If I switch to speakerphone and then back it works sometimes. Very annoying. I have not used Siri.

I reported it to AT&T who had me swap the SIM. That did not fix it.

I called AppleCare 4 times and went to the store (with an appointment) only to be sent back because they were too busy. Totally frustrated by Apple customer service.

Just keep in mind the 4s has only been out for what? 1.5weeks? It's been one of the largest releases of the iPhone to date so yeah I would think apple is a little overwhelmed. Yeah I'm a tad annoyed with the situation but also understand glitches happen too. Not trying to take the topic away from the concern but just a thought to think about. I would like my high end phone to work like it should too. Hopefully apple gets it squared away and I would put money on saying apple knows about the problem even it's not public

Just adding my voice to the thread ...

I have a 32GB black 4s (from Virgin in Australia) and experience this problem a couple of times a day. If I place a call I hear no ringing tone and when the call connects I can't hear anything even though the call timer is ticking over. I usually call back immediately and it works OK, and the receiver of the call reports that they heard their phone ringing when I first tried to call, yet when they answered they couldn't hear me on the line. I haven't tried any re-sets or anything as reading through this thread seemed to indicate it may not work anyway.

My wife has a 16BG white 4s and is not experiencing the problem.

Here is a follow up on my findings.

I disabled Siri and it makes NO difference whatsoever. I keep having the problem in about 50% of my calls. So in other words the problem does not appear to be caused by Siri. I do want to say that I tried putting the phone in speakerphone mode and it DOES fix the problem for me each and every time. So while it is definitely an inconvenience, pressing the speakerphone button does solve the issue. Then you can press it again to use the regular speaker. I will post again if I learn anything else.

Some updates: besides the problem of the outgoing call with no voice, there is another critical problem: when I plug in an earphone or pair a bluetooth headset to make a phone call, the iphone 4s will turn the speaker on automatically. you can't turn it off or change to headset. And people can't hear you when you speak. I went to Apple Store yesterday and was told to re-store it. I did but it didn't work.

Since my other two friends' iphone 4s work fine always, I begin to think that this could be a hardware problem rather than a software one, I just went to Apple Store and exchanged for a new one. The two problems I mentioned above gone and the new iphone works perfectly now.

I had the same problem, iPhone 4S 64GB unlocked purchased from Apple directly. The ear piece wouldn't make any sound unless I toggled the speakerphone button on and off. Pluging in the headset just caused the speaker phone to turn on and it could not be turned off.

After resetting the phone from iTunes (the people at the Apple store insist you do this and you should try it before going to the store to save yourself some time) both from a backup and then again to a 'new device'. Neither resets solved the issue.

I brought it into an Apple store (make sure you make an appointment with the Genius bar before hand otherwise you'll have to wait) and they replaced the phone for me after confirming that it was not working properly. The replacement is working perfectly.

A word of advice, don't wait around for a software update hoping that it'll fix this issue. It is quite clearly a hardware issue, so visit whoever you bought the phone from and try to get yourself a replacement.

I have almost given up completely. Apple is very rude about the problem when you call won't even take down this forum address didn't want to here about problem. They just keep telling me to go to the store but at the store they will not exchange for a new one they will simply only give you a warranty remanufactured iphone. They tell you it is new and technically it is because it's not refurbished but it is not actually a new one over they years from dealing with other iphone replacements I have been told that they are not new. If you buy a tv from bestbuy that dose not work you can exchange it for a new one in a box that is how apple used to be but no longer is they have changed. They don't care about there customers anymore. I waited 15 hours in the rain for my 4s and now I have to swap it out with a remanufactured iphone I will more than likely return for a refund and buy an android phone.

I'm on ATT and am intermittently experiencing all of the symptoms outlined in this post, only when using the apple-provided headphones, however. I don't use a BT headset, andmy usage of Siri doesn't seem to make a difference. I have, however, noticed one commonality in all my failed calls.

At the beginning of those calls, I hear a tone in my apple earphones that's supposed to signify that a BT headset is connected to my phone. At this point I've reverted to my original iPhone 4 for calling, as I can't depend on the 4S to make calls.

I'm testing with BT off, but I'll see where that leads. At this point I'm ready to blame Bluetooth 4.0.
