iPhone 4S mic not always working

I have been having intermittent issues with my iPhone 4S where the mic will stop working for periods of time. I believe it is software related because in the past two occassions, rebooting the phone will fix the issue.

When the mic isn't working, the phone, Siri, and voice notes will all register no sound from the microphone.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is this something that will be fixed in an upcoming update, or do I need to take the hardware in to be replaced?

same thing happened to me. first time i noticed it was the day i bought it and the siri bar would intermittently not recognizing any sounds coming in, then when i would call someone they couldn't hear me. i took it back to the apple store and exchanged it. its been working great ever since. must be an issue with some of the mics.

Same problems here. What DOESN'T fix the problem:

- replacing phone (I've had Apple replace it twice)

- resetting to factory settings and NOT restoring (i.e. set it up like new phone)

- disabling Siri

What DOES fix the problem? Good question. The folks at the "genius" bar claimed they hadn't heard about this problem.

Apple? What are you doing?

hardware problem - biPhone 4S 64gb White

I have received a replacement iPhone today.

But I am still having the same hardware problem, when using the headphones in a call - I cannot hear the other person and the other person cannot hear me.

I have to put the phone on loudspeaker and then switch it back to the headphones, this then works for couple of minutes and then I'm again faced with the same problem.

Since Ive had the replacement I have made 20-30 calls and have had an issue with every call which i've made using the headphones.

Firstly, I was given a refurbished iPhone even though the my original iPhone was within 14 days of Purchase.

I would like for someone to get in contact with me and resolve the issue I am having as this phone is absolutely useless.

Experiencing same problem with new iPhone4S. Went into Apple store in London today to discuss. Problem is being regularly reported wich is tantamount to an acknowlegement there seems to be a problem. Phone would've been replaced if there were any phones available. New and hopefully problem-free phones should become available within the next 3-7 days.

The problem isn't as big as you think. It certainly isn't like last year's proximity sensor issue. I'm on my 4th iPhone 4s (soon to be my 5th) and all but the first one had the problem. Me ex gf does not have this problem either does any of my friends. The first unit I had was a disaster, but all the units I have had since then have been functioning perfectly.

I have had the mic issue since day 1, but it was intermittent and I was hoping it would get fixed in a firmware update. I finally called support who told me to go into the apple store and get a diagnostic. They told me it was only software so they did a clean install, but then the problem was still persisting after the phone was flashed, so they gave me a new device.

Note, they told me that the only reason I was eligible for a new device at no cost was that it was in 30 days of purchase, so if you are having this issue and on the fence about going in because it is intermittent, my recommendation is DO NOT HESITATE. Go in as soon as you can because once that 30 day window closes you will have to fight for it harder. Even as is, I was in that apple store for 2 hours, and I never want to go back.

Good luck everyone.

Got my new iphone 4s today. Mic was not working right away after setup and restore from iphone 4 backup. I can't seem to do anythin about it. Sometimes the microphone works (for Siri, calls, voice memo alike) and sometimes it just doesnt. Well, acutally form listening to the voice memo records i can tell that the microphone 'works' but there is a lot of white noise and i can here my voice only very quite in the background. No wonder Siri can't hear me.

Outgoing calls work with the headset and when I activate the speaker.

Again, the funny thing is that the microphone seems to turn itself on and off (mute) at random, even if I don't do anything...

I'm pretty sure it's an software issue...

I was pulling my hair out almost , when I was trying to use siri for voice texting etc I did a restore of my 4s iPhone but still had the problem. It always wored in my car but intermittent in my home. I discovered that with Bluetooth on my voice text and message didn't work 100 per cent of the time, I turned off the Bluetooth when in my home and the voice activated Siri and other apps like dragon dictation worked fine. Hope this helps some of you.

I am having a problem with making or answering a call. When I have my head phone on and make a call, the phone switch over to the speaker and I can hear the other caller but they can’t hear me. I hang up the phone and try the call again and the same thing. I went to the apple store and the exchange my phone with a refurb after only having my phone for a week. Went a couple of days everything was fine (had issue with music playing on the Iphone after I sync with itunes), but now it’s back. I can unplug the headphones and the same issues happen. I restarted the phone and I am then able to make calls again. Last time I done that it happen again. It doesn’t seems like it’s the phone and maybe with the iOS5 or features.
