how to do i find the password to unlock your iphone backup file
None of my passwords worked; not my computer password, not my wifi password, not any of my old or current iTunes passwords, arghhhh!! I'm stuck with a $1200 brick right now.
Thank you so much!! Without your post, I would have not been able to restore my phone!!
I tried an old itunes password and it worked!
i had this problem as well.. long story short you have to try your first itunes password and if you dont remember it you can go to keychain and search for it there.
Is there a question associated with that screen shot?

Then if you start reading this thread from the top you will find a lot of helpful advice about how to guess the password.
I eventually found mine by going through all my previous user account passwords... It was the first user password I used on my laptop when the phone was first connected and synced
You get unlimited guesses. To speed up the process uncheck Encrypt Backup and you will be prompted immediately
Thank you SO much - your mention of mobile me made me think of my original, very first password associated with my Mac account - typed it in, and BINGO. Lifesaver, and thank you again!
In that case, you will not be able to use that backup at all.
Apple in their genius have decided to use the password you first used to set up your iphone (maybe like 2 years ago), even though you only took the backup 5 minutes ago. Give that a try.
Found it in Keychain Access on my Macbook, under iPhone Backup (You can simply reveal the password with the check box Show the password) - entering your unlocking mac code
These are all great suggestions. But is there any reason why Apply can't just offer us a password reset option???
Because that defeats the purpose of encryption. Not to mention it's not secure. If you enable the encryption, it's your responsibility to remember that password.
Well said Pancho.
In order to do that Apple would have to put a backdoor in their encryption so that they would be able to do that. It would defeat any security for encryption.
